Then enable your phone’s built-in saver mode when you need extra runtime. Adjust background activity, mobile data, location, Bluetooth, and 5G only when the related features are not important at that moment. These changes are reversible, but Android menus vary by manufacturer and software version, and iPhone features vary by model and iOS release.
The highest-impact settings to change first
Use this order so you improve endurance without unnecessarily breaking notifications or app features:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Reduce brightness to the lowest comfortable level. A screen that is brighter than your surroundings needs more power.
- Shorten the screen timeout. Set the display to turn off sooner when you stop using it.
- Inspect Battery usage. Find apps or system activities using an unusual share of power before restricting everything in the background.
- Turn on a saver mode when runtime is more important than speed or instant updates.
- Target connectivity and location. Use Wi-Fi when practical and disable radios or location access only when you do not need the associated feature.
There is no official, universal percentage or extra-hours ranking for these settings. Your result depends on display technology, signal strength, app behavior, usage pattern, and battery condition.

Lower brightness without making the phone hard to read
High brightness is a persistent drain, especially when you use the phone for navigation, video, games, or reading. Reduce it until text remains comfortable in the current light. A level that works indoors may be unsafe outdoors, so treat brightness as an environment-dependent control rather than a fixed target.

Android’s battery guidance recommends reducing brightness and enabling automatic brightness. On iPhone, Apple’s battery troubleshooting guidance likewise points to Auto-Brightness when its battery suggestions identify that setting as disabled. Automatic adjustment can prevent the display from remaining unnecessarily bright after you move into a darker room.
Make the screen turn off sooner
A long screen timeout wastes power whenever you put the phone down while the display is still on. Choose the shortest timeout that does not interrupt reading or another task. Apple calls the equivalent control Auto-Lock. Low Power Mode sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds; you can use a longer value during normal operation if that is more practical.
Try Dark theme with realistic expectations
Android lists Dark theme as a battery-saving option, and Battery Saver may enable it automatically. The available evidence does not establish a consistent amount of savings across display types or apps, so consider Dark theme an easy experiment rather than a guaranteed major improvement. Keep it if you prefer the appearance or find that it helps on your particular phone.

Find and manage battery-hungry apps
Check the usage screen before restricting apps
Open your phone’s Battery settings and inspect the app and system breakdown. Look for an app whose consumption is disproportionate to how much you used it. An app can consume power through foreground use, background work, location, media playback, syncing, or repeated network activity.
On iPhone, the Battery screen includes Daily Usage and app/system activity. Apple’s activity examples include turn-by-turn directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetch. A high figure is not automatically a fault: navigation and music are expected to use power while active. The useful question is whether the activity matches what you intended.
Restrict only the identified problem
After you identify an unusually active app, use the controls offered by your operating system to limit its background activity, location access, or notifications. Check whether the restriction affects a function you rely on, such as message delivery, navigation, photo backup, or time-sensitive updates. Broadly disabling background work for every app can save some activity but creates more inconvenience than a targeted change.

Understand what saver modes change
Android Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity. iPhone Low Power Mode turns off Background App Refresh and email fetch, among other changes. Either approach can delay syncing, reduce how promptly an app receives new information, or postpone automatic updates. If a notification arrives late after enabling a saver, check whether the app’s background permission or fetch behavior was changed.

Use the built-in power-saving modes
Saver modes are useful when you need additional runtime immediately, such as during travel or when you cannot charge. They trade some responsiveness, visual effects, network behavior, or background work for lower consumption.
| Phone platform | How to reach the control | Documented behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | Open Settings and look for Battery, Battery Saver, or a similarly named low-power control. | May limit background activity, turn on Dark theme, and delay visual effects, features, network connections, or apps. | Menu names and behavior vary by manufacturer and software version; some Google instructions apply only to Android 13 and later. |
| iPhone 15 and later | Settings → Battery → Power Mode → Low Power Mode. | Reduces brightness; sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds; turns off Background App Refresh, email fetch, and automatic downloads; disables some visual effects; and temporarily pauses iCloud Photos syncing. | On most devices, 5G is disabled except during video streaming or large downloads. Apple documents a model-specific exception for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. ProMotion displays are limited to a 60 Hz refresh rate. |
| iPhone 14 and earlier | Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode. | Uses the same Low Power Mode class of reductions, including less background work and lower display activity. | The exact effects can differ by model. Low Power Mode switches off automatically when the phone reaches 80% charge or higher. |
Because Android manufacturers customize these controls, consult the instructions for your exact model if the option is not where expected. On any phone, observe whether delayed mail, syncing, downloads, or visual changes are acceptable before leaving the mode on permanently.

iPhone Adaptive Power: when it applies
Adaptive Power is separate from the manual Low Power Mode switch. Apple’s support material describes it as available on iPhone 15 Pro or later, with eligibility and defaults tied to the model and iOS version. For iOS 26 or later, Apple lists iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max in its supported-device guidance. Apple says it is on by default on iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air, and off by default on listed iPhone 16 models, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
When active, Adaptive Power can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode at 20% charge. It needs at least seven days to learn charging habits before it engages. Apple’s supported-device list can change with later releases, so verify the current list under Settings and Apple’s documentation for your model before relying on it.

Connectivity and location: change only what you do not need
Prefer Wi-Fi when it is reliable
Google recommends Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when practical. A stable Wi-Fi connection can avoid the extra cellular work associated with mobile-data use, but switching networks repeatedly can also be inconvenient. Leave mobile data available when you need dependable connectivity away from Wi-Fi.
Best Value
Deal with weak cellular coverage
Apple notes that weak cellular coverage can correspond with higher battery use because the phone works harder to maintain service. If 5G speed does not noticeably improve what you are doing, 5G Auto can fall back to LTE. On iPhone, this option is intended to balance speed and endurance rather than force 5G off in every situation.
Turn off radios and location only for a reason
Bluetooth can be disabled when you are not using accessories that require it. Location access can be turned off for apps that do not need your position, but some apps and features will not work with Location off. Airplane mode is appropriate when mobile-network access is unnecessary, such as during a flight or in an area where you are intentionally offline. Streaming, hotspot tethering, long GPS sessions, and calls while moving between towers are all activities identified as battery-intensive; reduce them when runtime is the priority.
Diagnose battery drain that does not improve
Use iPhone’s suggestions and activity history
- Open Settings → Battery and read any battery suggestions shown at the top.
- Review Daily Usage to see when consumption increased.
- Compare app activity with your actual use, paying attention to background tasks, location, media, syncing, and mail fetch.
- Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health. If the screen shows Service, Apple recommends considering battery replacement.
A recent software update or a new-device setup can temporarily increase activity while the phone completes indexing, syncing, or other work. Apple advises checking again after a few days rather than treating the first post-update reading as a permanent condition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck Android updates and manufacturer support
Install available system updates and revisit Battery usage afterward. Android settings and diagnostics differ by manufacturer, so persistent problems that are not explained by the usage screen should be taken to the device maker’s support channel for model-specific guidance.
Do not factory-reset as a first battery fix
A factory reset removes local data and installed apps. Google advises backing up first and using a reset only after less destructive troubleshooting has failed or a support technician specifically recommends it. A reset cannot repair a physically degraded battery and may only hide the original cause temporarily.
Choose a setting profile that matches your priority
| Priority | Settings to use | Trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum everyday convenience | Comfortable automatic brightness, a moderate timeout, unrestricted essential apps, and normal connectivity. | Shorter runtime than an aggressive saver profile. |
| Longer runtime with normal notifications | Lower comfortable brightness, shorter timeout, targeted app restrictions, Wi-Fi when practical, and selective location access. | You must identify problem apps and may see limited updates from restricted apps. |
| Emergency endurance | Enable Android Battery Saver or iPhone Low Power Mode; reduce brightness; postpone streaming, hotspot use, large downloads, and navigation when possible. | Delayed background work, reduced visual effects or refresh rate, possible network changes, and lower performance. |
| Travel or no-signal situations | Use Airplane mode when you do not need mobile service; restore radios before services that depend on them. | Calls, messages, location-dependent features, and connected accessories may stop working. |
Apply one or two changes, then watch Battery usage over the next normal day. This makes it easier to identify which adjustment helped and which one caused an unwanted delay. If the phone still loses charge unusually fast after accounting for signal strength, recent setup or updates, app activity, and battery health, the remaining issue is more likely to require manufacturer or authorized service than another blanket setting change.
