Turn roaming off on your home or Primary line to reduce the risk of your regular carrier charging for roaming data. On iPhone, you can keep Primary for calls, SMS and iMessage; on Android, choose Maya as the data SIM. Install and test the eSIM over Wi‑Fi before departure, but select it for data when you arrive in a covered destination.
The three settings that matter most
A Maya Mobile travel eSIM is a second cellular line. It will not normally provide service merely because it is installed: the phone must have the Maya line enabled, use it for mobile data, and permit that line to roam on partner networks. The same controls also protect your home line from unintentionally using international data.

- Maya line: Turn the line on, select it for mobile data, and enable Data Roaming.
- Home/Primary line: Leave it available for your normal number if needed, but disable Data Roaming.
- Data-saving control: Low Data Mode on iPhone or Data Saver on Android is optional and limits background traffic.
Maya’s eSIM Quick Start Guide, published January 27, 2025, says an eSIM installed before a trip should be selected as the mobile-data plan when you arrive. The plan connects only in the destination or destinations covered by the purchase.
Before you leave: compatibility, unlocking and installation
Confirm the exact phone model
Your handset must support eSIM installation and be unlocked rather than restricted to a carrier. Compatibility can differ between regional versions of the same model. Check the exact model and region against Maya’s current supported-device list in Which phones are compatible with Maya Mobile eSIMs?, updated October 6, 2025. A phone that supports eSIM in one market may have a different hardware configuration elsewhere.

Install with an internet connection
Use Wi‑Fi or an existing cellular connection while adding the plan. Maya supports QR-code and manual activation workflows; follow the activation details supplied with your plan. Installing at home avoids trying to download a profile after landing without dependable connectivity.
Give the line an unmistakable label
During or after installation, label the new line “Maya,” the destination, or another name you will recognize. This is not a technical requirement, but it prevents selecting the wrong SIM when both lines appear in cellular settings.
Do not switch too early if you are still at home
You may prepare the line before departure, but Maya specifically instructs travelers to choose it for mobile data on arrival. Leaving your home line as the data line until you reach the covered destination avoids an unnecessary change while you are still using your domestic service.
iPhone settings: exact path and recommended choices
Apple may label the menu Cellular, Mobile or Mobile Service, depending on region and iOS version. The underlying controls are the same.

- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service).
- Tap the Maya plan and confirm Turn On This Line is enabled.
- In the Maya plan’s options, turn Data Roaming on. Roaming is required because the travel eSIM uses a partner network outside its home network.
- Return to Cellular settings and set Cellular Data (also called Mobile Data) to the Maya eSIM.
- Keep Allow Cellular Data Switching off if it appears and you want to prevent the iPhone from falling back to the home line for data. If you deliberately need automatic fallback, understand that it can use the other line’s data allowance or roaming service.
- Open the Primary/home plan and turn its Data Roaming off.
- Optionally open Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode and choose Low Data Mode to reduce background transfers.
Maya’s example keeps the Primary line assigned to voice, SMS and iMessage while the Maya line carries cellular data. That arrangement lets your usual number remain available without making the home SIM the data source.

Setting the Primary line’s roaming switch to off reduces the likelihood of cellular data charges from your domestic carrier. It does not automatically cancel every possible international charge for calls or text messages; those depend on your carrier’s terms.
Android settings: Samsung, Pixel and other models
Android manufacturers place dual-SIM controls in different menus, and wording changes with the phone model and operating-system version. The following paths are Maya’s examples rather than universal labels.

- Open Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager.
- Choose the Maya eSIM as the SIM for Mobile data.
- Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks and enable Data roaming for the Maya line.
- In the same mobile-network or SIM controls, disable roaming for the home SIM.
- If you want to limit background use, open the phone’s data-usage controls and enable Data Saver.
Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs.
- Select Maya and set it as the preferred SIM for Mobile data.
- Within the Maya SIM settings, turn Roaming on.
- Select the home SIM and turn its roaming switch off.
- Enable Data Saver if you want Android to restrict background traffic.
Other Android phones
Look for SIMs, SIM manager, Mobile network or Connections under Settings. The labels may differ, but you need the same three outcomes: Maya is enabled, Maya is the mobile-data SIM, and roaming is on for Maya only. Do not assume that a global “roaming” switch controls both lines correctly; inspect each SIM’s settings.

What happens when you arrive
After landing in a destination covered by the purchased plan, open the SIM settings and verify that Maya is the selected mobile-data line. If you installed it early, this is the moment to change the data selection from your home SIM to Maya. Keep the Maya line turned on and its roaming setting enabled.
Allow a short period for registration. If the phone shows no data immediately, do not repeatedly delete and reinstall the profile. First check the destination, line state, data-line selection and roaming switch, then use the connection steps below.

Maya’s eSIM Connection Troubleshooting Guide recommends a staged approach. Start with settings that must be correct before attempting advanced network changes.

- You are physically in a country or area included in the plan you bought.
- The Maya eSIM is turned on and has not been disabled.
- Maya is selected as the phone’s mobile-data SIM.
- Data Roaming is enabled for Maya.
Also check that Airplane Mode is off and that the phone is not reporting a carrier lock or an invalid eSIM profile.

2. Refresh the radio connection
Turn Airplane Mode on, wait 30 seconds, and turn it off. This forces the phone to renegotiate a network connection without changing the eSIM profile. Maya says authentication can take up to 15 minutes, so allow that time before deciding the activation failed.
3. Check the Android APN only when necessary
For Android devices that still have no data after the baseline checks, inspect the Access Point Names (APN) menu for the Maya SIM. Maya’s guide specifies globaldata as the APN and says no username or password is required. This is a conditional troubleshooting entry, not a setting every traveler should add before departure. Save the profile, select it, and retry the connection.
4. Try manual network selection as a later step
If the connection remains unavailable after the restart and, on Android, the APN check, use the phone’s manual network-selection option and try an available partner network. Menu names vary by device. Manual selection should come after the basic checks because choosing an incompatible network can make diagnosis harder.

5. Do not delete the eSIM as a first response
Maya explicitly warns against deleting the eSIM while troubleshooting. Removing the profile can leave you without a way to reinstall it when you have limited internet access and may require a new activation process. Keep the profile installed while you work through the connection guide.

Maya Mobile eSIM plans are data-only and do not include a local telephone number. Selecting Maya for mobile data therefore does not transfer your usual number to the travel plan. On iPhone, the practical arrangement in Maya’s setup example is to retain Primary for voice, SMS and iMessage while routing internet traffic through Maya.
Maya says your primary number may be able to use Wi‑Fi Calling over the Maya data connection if your home carrier supports that feature. Availability, international-calling treatment and SMS charges are controlled by the home carrier, not by the eSIM setting. Check your carrier’s international roaming, calling and messaging terms before assuming that a travel data plan eliminates every fee.
Messaging apps that use internet data can continue working through Maya, but ordinary carrier calls and texts remain governed by whichever line and carrier handle them.

When to use Low Data Mode or Data Saver
These controls are optional. They are useful when the plan has a limited allowance, when background synchronization is not important during travel, or when you want to reduce surprise usage from photo backups, app updates and streaming services.
- iPhone: Select Maya under Settings > Cellular, open its data options, then choose Low Data Mode under Data Mode.
- Android: Turn on Data Saver from the system’s network or data-usage settings. Exact placement differs by manufacturer.
Low Data Mode and Data Saver do not replace the critical line-selection and roaming settings. They limit background behavior; they do not make an unselected or roaming-disabled eSIM connect.
Printable arrival checklist
- Destination is covered by the purchased Maya plan.
- Maya eSIM is installed, labeled and turned on.
- Maya is selected for mobile data.
- Data Roaming is on for Maya.
- Data Roaming is off for the home/Primary SIM.
- Low Data Mode or Data Saver is enabled if you want to conserve data.
- Primary remains selected for voice, SMS and iMessage when that is your intended arrangement.
- If data fails: check the four baseline conditions, toggle Airplane Mode for 30 seconds, and allow up to 15 minutes for authentication.
- On Android only, try APN
globaldatawith no username or password if the basic checks fail. - Do not delete the eSIM while troubleshooting.
