The settings that affect satellite connectivity depend on who provides the service. Apple’s built-in satellite features use a Connection Assistant when an iPhone has no cellular or Wi‑Fi coverage. A carrier’s satellite service can use a separate cellular setting, while Android requirements vary by carrier and phone. Before changing settings, verify the phone model, software version, country, carrier plan or registration, and whether you have an unobstructed view of the sky.
Turning a setting on cannot overcome an unsupported phone, an unavailable service in your region, or hills and buildings blocking the satellite path. Use the instructions below for the feature you actually have.

Which settings and requirements matter?
Satellite connectivity is controlled by a combination of software, account status, radio settings and physical conditions. The same switch does not activate every service.
| Feature | Provider | Device and software | Important settings or activation path | What you can use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone built-in satellite features | Apple, using its satellite network and network providers | iPhone 14 or later with compatible iOS | Connection Assistant in Settings > Satellite or Control Center when cellular and Wi‑Fi are unavailable | Emergency SOS, roadside assistance, Messages and Find My, where available |
| Carrier-provided satellite on iPhone | Your mobile carrier | iPhone 13 or later, current iOS, supported carrier and possibly a supported plan | Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Satellite | Carrier-defined satellite messaging or limited connectivity; a status bar indicator can show “SAT” |
| Satellite SOS on supported Android phones | Carrier-specific service, such as Verizon’s documented offering | Satellite-messaging-capable phone with active cellular service | Cellular data on and Airplane Mode off; Verizon starts the flow after dialing 911 without service | Emergency satellite messaging |
| Pixel Satellite SOS | Carrier and government arrangements | Pixel software and API updates plus registration with the satellite network | Google does not publish one universal Android toggle in its guidance | Emergency help where coverage, conditions and local arrangements allow |
Apple documents the iPhone-native and carrier categories separately in its satellite connection guide and carrier-feature guide. Android behavior must be checked against the instructions for your carrier and model.

Using Apple’s built-in satellite features
Check model and software first
Apple’s native satellite functions require an iPhone 14 or later and compatible software. They are intended for supported locations where cellular and Wi‑Fi coverage are unavailable. Update iOS while you still have an internet connection before travelling somewhere without coverage; an update can include the software and service components needed for the feature.
Apple says activation of an iPhone 14 or later includes its satellite features free for two years. That is a vendor statement that can change, so check Apple’s current terms for the phone and country you are using.
Open the Connection Assistant
Starting with iOS 18, open Settings > Satellite or open Control Center and tap the Satellite option. The assistant displays on-screen instructions for aligning the phone. This menu is useful only when the iPhone has no cellular or Wi‑Fi service. If either connection is available, the Settings Satellite option may not appear; from Control Center, the same control opens a demonstration instead of starting a real satellite session.
You do not need to switch off cellular data to force the iPhone onto a satellite. Apple’s documented process is to use the assistant after ordinary cellular and Wi‑Fi coverage has disappeared. Disabling cellular data can remove a normal path without creating a satellite path.
Hold the phone for a clear view
Go outside, hold the iPhone naturally in your hand and follow the movement prompts. Keep as much sky and horizon visible as possible. Light foliage can slow a connection. Dense foliage, hills, mountains, canyons and tall structures can block it altogether.
Apple says that in ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and horizon, a message might take 30 seconds or more to send. Under light or medium foliage, at higher latitudes or in other poor conditions, the same operation may take several minutes. This is Apple’s description of possible performance, not a guaranteed delivery time or an independently measured average.
Turning on a carrier-provided satellite feature on iPhone
Use the separate cellular menu
A carrier satellite service is not the same as Apple’s built-in Connection Assistant. Apple lists iPhone 13 or later, current iOS, a supported carrier and, in some cases, a supported cellular plan as requirements. When the carrier feature is active, the status bar can display SAT.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo turn the carrier feature off, use Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Satellite. On an iPhone with multiple SIMs, first select the carrier or phone number whose service you want to manage, then open Cellular Data Options. If Satellite is not listed, the carrier may not offer the feature, may not support your plan, or may not support it in your location.

Confirm plan, country and charges
Carrier satellite services can require a particular plan, registration or regional eligibility. Carrier fees and data rates may apply. Ask your carrier which countries and regions are supported, whether your line is provisioned for satellite use and what functions are included. Do not assume that an iPhone that can use Apple’s emergency feature is automatically eligible for a carrier’s satellite messaging service.
Apple notes that some carriers may provide satellite cellular connectivity during certain disaster situations even when the everyday carrier satellite option was switched off and “SAT” was not displayed. That possibility does not guarantee emergency connectivity, and no setting can promise that a carrier will open service during a disaster.
Android settings are carrier-specific
Verizon’s documented Android Satellite SOS flow
Verizon’s instructions apply to its supported devices and coverage areas, not to every Android phone. They require a satellite-messaging-capable device, active cellular service, cellular data turned on and a location inside the service’s listed coverage region. Verizon explicitly says Satellite SOS will not work in Airplane Mode, so turn Airplane Mode off before attempting the connection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When there is no ordinary service, dial 911. If the phone and account are eligible, the Satellite SOS prompts appear; follow them to position the phone and exchange emergency messages. When Verizon’s terrestrial network is available, the phone uses that ordinary network instead of satellite. A different carrier can use different menus, eligibility rules or activation methods.
What Google’s Pixel guidance does and does not establish
Google’s Pixel support guidance says Satellite SOS availability depends on software and API updates and registration with the satellite network. It also depends on network coverage, network conditions and arrangements between the carrier and the relevant government agency. Google does not establish a universal Android settings path in that guidance, so do not infer that a missing Satellite menu on one Pixel or another Android model is an error.
Check the support page for your exact Pixel model, carrier and country at Google Pixel emergency satellite help. Eligibility can change when a carrier adds or withdraws support.

Airplane Mode
Airplane Mode is an explicit blocker for Verizon’s Android Satellite SOS instructions. Turn it off when you need that service. Apple’s native iPhone instructions do not tell users to enable Airplane Mode; they tell you to use the Connection Assistant after cellular and Wi‑Fi coverage is gone.

For the documented Verizon Android service, cellular data must be on. This requirement is not universal to every Android or iPhone satellite product. On iPhone, Apple’s native feature does not require you to disable cellular data, while a carrier feature is managed in the separate Satellite option under Cellular Data Options.

Software and registration
An up-to-date operating system is part of Apple’s iPhone requirements and Google’s Pixel guidance. Pixel Satellite SOS can also require API updates and registration with the satellite network. If an option is missing, install available system updates while online, restart the phone if the update requests it, and verify that the carrier has provisioned the line before treating the menu as a settings problem.
Geography and obstructions override phone settings
Satellite radios need a physical path to the sky. Apple recommends an outdoor position with a clear view of both sky and horizon. Buildings, vehicles, dense tree cover, canyon walls, hills and mountains can interrupt or lengthen the exchange. Move to an open area rather than repeatedly toggling radios indoors.
Apple also says satellite use may not work in some areas above 62° latitude. Country support is separate from latitude: a compatible phone can still lack service because of the market where it was purchased or the country where it is being used.

Regional and market restrictions
Apple’s availability changes by country and region. Its current support information excludes Apple satellite connectivity on iPhone models purchased in Armenia, Belarus, China mainland, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Russia. For models purchased in Hong Kong and Macao, Apple lists satellite connectivity only for iPhone 16e and later. Check the live Apple availability page before travel because these market rules can change.
Carrier-provided services have their own geographic boundaries and plan rules. A phone can show the carrier Satellite menu at home but be outside the carrier’s supported region on a trip. Confirm the destination, the account’s plan and any roaming or data charges with the carrier before relying on the service.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The iPhone Satellite option is missing
First determine whether you are looking for Apple’s native feature or a carrier feature. Apple’s Settings > Satellite control may be hidden while cellular or Wi‑Fi is available, and Control Center will then show a demo. For a carrier feature, open Settings > Cellular, select the correct SIM or number, and check Cellular Data Options. If Satellite is still absent, verify the iPhone generation, iOS version, carrier support, plan and region.
The phone says there is no satellite connection
Move outdoors with an unobstructed horizon and follow the alignment prompts slowly. Dense foliage, terrain and tall structures can block the signal even when every setting is correct. Allow extra time under foliage or at high latitudes; Apple describes several minutes as possible in those conditions.

Android Satellite SOS does not start
For Verizon’s documented flow, confirm active service, cellular data on, Airplane Mode off and a supported device in the listed coverage area, then dial 911 when ordinary service is unavailable. For another carrier or a Pixel, consult that provider’s eligibility and registration instructions instead of copying Verizon’s menu assumptions.
Quick Recap
Prepare before leaving coverage
- Identify whether the service is Apple-native, carrier-provided on iPhone or an Android carrier feature.
- Verify the phone model, current operating-system and API updates, supported country and carrier plan.
- Complete any carrier registration while you have cellular or Wi‑Fi access.
- Learn the relevant entry point: Settings > Satellite or Control Center for Apple’s native feature, Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Satellite for an iPhone carrier feature, or the carrier’s emergency procedure on Android.
- Plan to use the phone outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon; no generic antenna or signal booster replaces that line of sight.
