Which Phone Features and Settings Use the Most Battery—and How to Reduce Their Drain

There is no universal ranking that says one phone feature always uses the most battery. Your screen brightness, cellular signal, apps, settings, battery age and what you are doing can change the result. The fastest way to find the real cause is to open your phone’s Battery screen, identify the app or system activity that stands out, and then change that specific behavior.

Across iPhone and Android guidance, the most useful places to investigate are screen-on time and brightness, background app activity, weak cellular coverage, and long sessions of navigation, video, gaming, streaming, hotspot, camera or location use. The steps below show how to diagnose each one without disabling features you actually need.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start with the phone’s battery report, not a generic ranking

Battery use is device-specific. A bright display may dominate one person’s day, while a navigation app, poor signal or an aging battery explains another person’s rapid drop. Official support pages do not publish a cross-platform percentage for each feature, so any fixed “top five” ranking would be misleading.

iPhone: read Daily Usage and app activity

Open Settings > Battery. The screen shows recent usage by day and identifies apps and system activity. Depending on the iPhone and software version, details can distinguish time the app was on screen from time it worked in the background. You may also see information about cellular coverage and notifications. A high percentage is a clue about where your charge went during the selected period, not a guarantee that the app is defective.

Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance says the Daily Usage chart and Adaptive Power require iOS 26 or later. Menus and eligibility can change with an iOS update, so use the labels shown on your device rather than relying on an older screenshot.

Android: check Battery usage and app background use

On Android, open Settings > Battery, then choose Battery usage or a similarly named option. Exact wording varies by manufacturer and Android version. Pixel phones provide app-level battery controls and can show whether an app’s work was primarily foreground or background activity. Google notes that some steps require Android 13 or later.

Compare the recent period with a normal day. A game that used 20 percent during a long session may be normal; an unfamiliar app using the same amount while you were not using it deserves investigation. Record the app, its foreground/background split and when the drain occurred before changing several settings at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the percentages can and cannot tell you

  • The report shows relative use during the selected period, not a universal power rating for the feature.
  • “Screen” or “display” use can include the power needed to illuminate the panel while an app is active.
  • Background activity may include syncing, location checks, audio, mail fetching or notifications when the app is not visible.
  • System entries can reflect radios, operating-system work or signal conditions rather than one user action.
  • A sudden change after an update may be temporary while the phone completes background tasks.

The biggest practical battery drains

1. A bright display and long screen-on time

The display is often the most visible source of consumption because it can remain active for hours. Apple specifically warns that high screen brightness consumes a lot of energy. Video, games, maps and social feeds combine screen time with processor, speaker and network work, making the total larger.

Reduce this drain with targeted changes:

  1. Lower brightness from Control Center on iPhone or Quick Settings on Android.
  2. Try automatic or adaptive brightness if it keeps the panel dimmer in ordinary lighting. It may raise brightness outdoors, so review the result over a full day.
  3. Shorten Auto-Lock on iPhone in Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. On Android, look for Screen timeout under Display.
  4. Turn the screen off when listening to audio or waiting for a download.
  5. Use a lower-refresh-rate option if your phone offers one and smooth scrolling is less important than endurance.

Do not set brightness so low that you repeatedly wake the screen or strain to read it; that can increase interaction time and defeat the saving.

2. Apps working in the background

Music playback, location tracking, cloud synchronization, mail fetching, file uploads and frequent refreshes can consume power when the app is not on screen. Notifications also require the phone to wake radios and display components.

On iPhone, inspect the app’s background activity in Settings > Battery. You can review background refresh controls in Settings > General > Background App Refresh, and notification frequency in Settings > Notifications. On Android and Pixel, open the app’s battery settings from the Battery usage list; labels may include Allow background usage, Optimized, Restricted or Unrestricted.

Restrict only apps whose report and behavior justify it. An app set to restricted background use may refresh less often, delay messages, stop uploading until opened or lose automatic location updates. For a messaging, safety or navigation app, that trade-off may be unacceptable.

3. Weak cellular coverage and constant radio searching

When coverage is poor or absent, the phone may spend more energy maintaining a connection or searching for service. Apple lists low or no coverage as a factor in reduced battery life. A trip through rural areas, a building with thick walls or an underground station can therefore produce unusual drain even when the screen is mostly off.

When practical, connect to reliable Wi-Fi. If you know you will be without coverage and do not need calls, texts or mobile data, use Airplane Mode until service returns. Turn it off again before you need cellular connectivity. Avoid leaving a hotspot active when no device is connected; tethering keeps the cellular radio and Wi-Fi active and can also warm the phone.

On supported Apple devices, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. Apple documents this option for iPhone 12 and later, the third-generation iPhone SE and 5G-capable iPads, although eligibility and menu names can change. Find it under Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data when the option is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Navigation, GPS and continuous location use

Turn-by-turn navigation keeps the display, location sensors, processor and often the cellular connection active. Location sharing, fitness tracking and delivery apps can continue checking position in the background. Google lists extended navigation and GPS use among activities that can drain an Android battery quickly.

Download offline maps where the app supports them, dim or turn off the display between route checks, and stop navigation when you arrive. Review location permission for apps that do not need continuous access. On Android, restricting location or background use can prevent automatic updates; on iPhone, choose the least-permissive location option that still supports the feature you need.

5. Video, streaming and graphics-heavy games

High-resolution video and demanding games keep the display, graphics processor, CPU, speakers and network busy at the same time. Streaming adds radio use, especially on cellular data. Google specifically calls out video, graphics-heavy games, streaming and prolonged app use.

  • Reduce the session length or pause when the phone is not needed.
  • Use Wi-Fi when it is reliable, particularly for long downloads or high-resolution streaming.
  • Lower game frame rate, graphics quality or display refresh rate if those controls are available.
  • Download content in advance, then watch or listen with the radio disabled when appropriate.
  • Keep the phone out of direct heat while gaming or recording; heat accelerates drain.

6. Camera, hotspot and other sustained workloads

Recording video, processing photos, running a hotspot or uploading large files can use power quickly. The camera activates sensors and image processing; a hotspot keeps several radios active; uploads may continue in the background. Finish the transfer, disable the hotspot and close a camera session when you are done. A power bank can provide more charge, but it does not reduce the underlying drain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Heat and an aging battery

Google’s Android guidance notes that a battery drains much faster when it is hot, even when the phone is not in use. Avoid leaving a phone in a hot car, under direct sun or inside insulating bedding while charging. Remove a thick case temporarily if it traps heat during a demanding workload, and pause intensive use if the device becomes unusually hot.

Battery capacity also declines with age. A worn battery can make an ordinary workload appear dramatically worse, but replacement is not a remedy for normal high screen, app or signal use. Check health information before spending money on service.

Settings that reduce drain, with their trade-offs

Setting or behavior What it controls Likely trade-off When to use it
Lower brightness or shorter timeout Display power and idle screen time Less visibility or more frequent screen wake When display or screen-on time leads the report
Background app restriction Sync, refresh, location and other off-screen work Later notifications, refreshes or uploads For a specific high-use app that does not need immediate updates
Wi-Fi instead of weak cellular data Cellular radio activity Requires a reliable Wi-Fi network At home, work or travel locations with usable Wi-Fi
Airplane Mode Cellular and other radio connections No normal cellular calls, texts or data until re-enabled In places with no coverage when you need no connection
5G Auto on supported Apple devices 5G versus LTE selection LTE may be used instead of the fastest available network When 5G adds little noticeable benefit
Battery Saver or Low Power Mode Background work, effects and some connections Reduced convenience and delayed or limited features When extending a low charge matters more than immediate updates
Lower game or video quality Graphics, processor and network workload Reduced visual quality or smoothness During long entertainment sessions

No row has a guaranteed percentage saving. Judge a change by whether the battery report identifies the behavior, how much screen, radio, location or background work it controls, and whether the feature loss is acceptable for your routine.

How to use Low Power Mode or Battery Saver

iPhone Low Power Mode

Enable it from Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode, or add the control to Control Center. Apple says it can reduce or disable Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, some visual effects and other background work. Certain activity may be slower or less frequent. Apple’s guidance also says Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the charge rises above 80 percent.

Android Battery Saver

Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver, or use the Quick Settings tile. Google says Android Battery Saver may limit background activity, visual effects, features, network connections and app behavior. Some phones let you schedule it or turn it on at a chosen charge level. Review the manufacturer’s wording because the exact restrictions differ.

These modes are emergency or convenience tools, not proof that a particular component is faulty. If one app is responsible every day, address that app rather than leaving the entire phone in a reduced-function state.

A step-by-step battery-drain troubleshooting sequence

  1. Establish the pattern. Open the Battery screen and compare the recent period with your normal use. Note the leading app or system entry, screen time, background time and any coverage information.
  2. Test the display theory. If screen or display leads, lower brightness, enable adaptive brightness if useful and shorten Auto-Lock or screen timeout. Recheck after a normal day.
  3. Test one app at a time. For a high-use app, determine whether the work was on screen or in the background. Restrict background use, reduce notifications or change location permission only if the app’s purpose allows it.
  4. Check the radio environment. If the drain appears during travel or in weak coverage, use Wi-Fi, stop unnecessary hotspot sessions and enable Airplane Mode where you do not need service.
  5. Reduce sustained workloads. Shorten navigation, streaming, gaming, camera or hotspot sessions; lower quality settings; and pause when the phone is hot.
  6. Use a system saver when necessary. Turn on Low Power Mode or Battery Saver when preserving the remaining charge is more important than immediate background updates.
  7. Account for updates. After an iOS update, Apple says background update tasks may continue temporarily; check battery behavior again after a few days. For persistent Android problems, Google recommends restarting and checking for system and app updates.
  8. Inspect battery health. If the phone is older, loses charge unusually fast even at light use or takes longer to charge, open its battery-health screen. On iPhone, a Service indication is a reason to consider battery replacement. The exact health path differs by iPhone generation; Android manufacturers provide their own diagnostics.

Platform-specific checks

iPhone checklist

  • Settings > Battery: review daily, app and system activity.
  • Settings > Display & Brightness: lower brightness and set Auto-Lock.
  • Settings > General > Background App Refresh: disable refresh for apps that do not need it.
  • Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options: review 5G Auto where supported.
  • Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode: use it when charge preservation is the priority.
  • Settings > Battery > Battery Health: check for a Service recommendation where available.

Android and Pixel checklist

  • Settings > Battery > Battery usage: identify leading apps and background activity.
  • Settings > Display: adjust brightness, adaptive brightness and screen timeout.
  • App battery settings: choose an appropriate background-use setting for a specific app.
  • Location and sync controls: limit them only when delayed refresh or reduced functionality is acceptable.
  • Quick Settings or Settings > Battery: enable Battery Saver for a low-charge situation.
  • System and app updates: install current updates and restart if unusual drain persists.

Android menus vary substantially by manufacturer, model and version. If a label is absent, search Settings for “battery,” “background usage,” “screen timeout” or “Battery Saver,” then confirm the effect in the phone’s own report.

How to choose the right compromise

Battery life is not the only objective. Someone who depends on timely navigation, emergency location sharing or work messages may reasonably keep location and notifications active. That person can save power elsewhere by dimming the display, ending a hotspot session or reducing video quality. Conversely, a phone used mainly for reading may benefit more from a shorter timeout than from restricting messaging apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this decision order:

  • Follow the evidence: change what the Battery screen identifies.
  • Prefer reversible changes: brightness, timeout and a temporary saver mode are easy to undo.
  • Protect essential functions: do not restrict an app that must deliver alerts, track safety or guide you.
  • Change one category at a time: you will learn which adjustment helped.
  • Recheck after ordinary use: judge a full day or comparable activity, not a few minutes.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Disabling every feature at once

Turning off location, synchronization, notifications and mobile data may extend runtime, but it also makes the phone unreliable and prevents you from identifying the cause. Start with the leading entry in the report and make a narrow change.

Assuming the newest network is always the culprit

5G can use more power in some conditions, but weak coverage, screen time and app workload may matter more. Compare behavior in the same location and use 5G Auto or Wi-Fi when the faster network does not improve the experience.

Blaming the battery before checking usage

An aging battery reduces capacity, but a navigation session, high brightness or a phone searching for service can explain a rapid drop on a healthy device. Check health indicators and usage data separately.

Ignoring heat

Heat can increase drain even while the phone is idle. Move the device to a cooler place, stop intensive work and avoid charging in hot conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a power bank to solve drain

A power bank adds energy; it does not stop a screen, app or radio from consuming it. Diagnose the behavior so the phone lasts longer between charges.

What is actually known about battery percentages

Official Apple and Google guidance provides qualitative causes and device-specific Battery screens, not a published statistic assigning a fixed share of charge to brightness, GPS, 5G or notifications across all phones. Your handset’s percentages are therefore the most relevant numbers. Treat them as a snapshot of your device, software, signal and recent behavior rather than a universal benchmark.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
