The best PC game launcher is usually the one required by the games you want to play. Choose Xbox if Game Pass, cloud gaming for supported titles, or a combined view of installed games is useful; choose Steam if its community, Workshop, and Remote Play features matter to you. For Battle.net and Epic Games Store, first check whether your desired game is sold there or requires that publisher’s client. Many players use more than one launcher, and no client makes game ownership, saves, subscriptions, or multiplayer rules interchangeable.
How to choose a PC game launcher
Start with the game, not a universal ranking. A title’s storefront, required account, and client can determine where you need to play it. Then compare the features you will actually use: subscription access, cloud gaming, mods, community tools, and streaming to other devices. Availability and support vary by game, service, and region.

- Verify multiplayer and save support for each title. Cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-entitlement are title-specific rather than automatic consequences of using a particular launcher.

Microsoft presents the Xbox PC app as a place to discover and download games through Game Pass, play supported console games on PC through cloud gaming, and chat across PC, mobile, and console. Its September 2025 announcement described an aggregated library showing installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts on Windows PCs and handheld devices. The feature can make installed titles easier to find and launch; it does not replace another store’s purchase or account relationship, and Microsoft does not promise that every storefront or game will appear. Steam: community features, Workshop, and Remote Play
Valve lists chat, game hubs, Workshop mods and cosmetics, achievements, reviews, recommendations, controller support, and mobile access among Steam’s features. Its current, undated platform page describes nearly 30,000 games and Workshop support for nearly 1,000 games; these are Valve’s rounded, changeable figures, not an independently audited comparison. Steam Remote Play streams a game running on a host PC to supported devices, including another PC, phone, tablet, TV, or VR device. Remote Play Together lets invited friends join supported local multiplayer games online; one player owns and runs the game. Battle.net and Epic Games Store: check the specific game and client requirement
The available official information here is not sufficient for a fair feature-by-feature comparison of Battle.net and Epic Games Store with Xbox and Steam. If a game you want is associated with either store or publisher, verify its current product page and support information for the required client, account, and features. Does your launcher determine cross-play or save sharing?
No. Microsoft says cross-play between Xbox console and PC, and with other platforms, is at game creators’ discretion. Xbox Play Anywhere covers cross-entitlement and progression only for participating games. A game can therefore support one feature without supporting another, and support may differ across platforms or editions. Why you may need more than one launcher
PC libraries often span storefronts, and a game may require its own store or publisher account even if another app displays it in an aggregated library. Xbox’s combined view is a convenience for accessing installed games, not a transfer of purchases or a guarantee that subscription access, saves, multiplayer, or account rules carry over. Keep the launcher or account required by each title, and verify any game-specific requirements before uninstalling a client or changing where you play.
