Choose according to what you need to manage: a unified inventory across stores, a fast way to launch installed games, a customizable collection with tags and views, a controller-friendly living-room interface, or the original store client’s installation, updating and cloud-save features.
For most multi-store collections, Playnite is the most flexible manager. GOG GALAXY is a strong choice for custom views and statistics, while the Xbox PC app suits Windows users who mainly want one simple list of installed games from supported storefronts. Keep the original clients available whenever a game depends on them for installation, updates, saves or account functions.

What “managing your games” actually means
People asking for a game launcher often want different things. A launcher can be the program that installs a title, the shortcut that starts it, or a library manager that lists everything you own even when it is not installed. Those are separate jobs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Collection management: importing games from several stores, including titles that are currently uninstalled.
- Launching: opening games from one interface instead of searching multiple clients.
- Installation and updates: downloading files, patching them and managing storage locations.
- Account services: handling cloud saves, achievements, subscriptions, refunds or platform-specific settings.
- Organization: applying tags, filters, custom views, themes, metadata and playtime tracking.
- Interface: using a keyboard and mouse at a desk or a controller from the couch.
No aggregator automatically replaces every store client. A unified list may only discover or launch a game while the store’s own software still performs installation, updating or cloud synchronization.

The table reflects vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent speed, reliability or usability test. Playnite and GOG feature descriptions were checked October 13, 2026; the Xbox behavior cited here comes from Xbox announcements dated September 15, 2025 and June 23, 2025. Store integrations and app behavior can change.
Choose Playnite for the broadest, most customizable library manager
Playnite is an open-source game library manager rather than a replacement storefront. Its official feature description says it can link libraries from Steam, Epic, Origin, GOG, Battle.net and Ubisoft Connect, and include games that are not installed. That makes it useful when your primary problem is fragmentation: one game on one store, another title on a different client, and older purchases spread across several accounts.
Why Playnite stands out
- One inventory for multiple services: imported entries can represent your whole collection instead of only the games installed on the current PC.
- Custom presentation: themes and extensions let you change how the library looks and what information it displays.
- Detailed organization: playtime tracking and metadata help you create views beyond a simple alphabetical list.
- Emulation support: the feature set includes emulation, so the same interface can cover more than modern PC storefronts.
- Couch use: Playnite documents a full-screen mode with full controller support.
- Local data model: Playnite says library information is stored locally on the PC and that it does not store user information on remote servers.
Those are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every third-party integration will remain available or behave identically. Integration availability, authentication flows and metadata quality can change independently of Playnite.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen Playnite is the right decision
Pick Playnite when you want an open-source manager, own games across several stores, care about custom views or extensions, or want an interface that can be navigated with a controller. It is also the clearest fit if your definition of “my library” includes games you own but have not installed.
What Playnite does not remove
Playnite can present and launch games, but the original service may still handle downloading, patching, license checks, cloud saves or account-specific settings. Treat it as the organizing layer and keep the relevant store clients installed for the functions they own.

Choose GOG GALAXY for views, filters and collection statistics
GOG GALAXY combines libraries through official and community-created integrations. Its product information says it can list games that are not installed and offers custom views, filters, sorting, tags and game statistics. This makes it attractive if you want to build a collection dashboard rather than simply open the last game you played.
How GOG GALAXY helps organize a large library
- Custom views: create different ways to see the same collection instead of relying on one default list.
- Filters and sorting: narrow the library by the attributes available in the imported metadata.
- Tags: mark games by genre, multiplayer status, backlog category or any other system that works for you.
- Statistics: review game-related statistics within the client.
- Cross-store aggregation: use integrations to bring other services into one collection view.
GOG says imported account data is handled through connected integrations and can be removed after disconnecting a platform. That is the provider’s description of its data handling, not an independent privacy audit.
The client caveat matters
GOG explicitly notes that you may still need other gaming clients for platform-specific features such as installation, automatic updates and cloud saves. A game appearing in GALAXY does not prove that GALAXY can perform every operation associated with that game. Check the integration and be prepared to open the original client when a feature is unavailable.
When GOG GALAXY is the right decision
Choose it if custom views, filters, tags and statistics are central to how you browse games, especially if you already use GOG’s own features such as cloud saves or rollbacks. It is less suitable if you expect one app to take over every store’s installation and account responsibilities.
Choose the Xbox PC app for a simple Windows list of installed games
The Xbox PC app takes a different approach from a full collection manager. In its September 15, 2025 announcement, Xbox said that when you install a game from a supported PC storefront, it automatically appears in My Library and in the Most Recent list in the sidebar. The same announcement says you can hide storefronts in settings.

Xbox’s June 23, 2025 Insider announcement described an aggregated library for launching games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other leading PC storefronts in one library. The wording supports a convenient launch hub, but it does not establish that every owned, uninstalled game from every service is inventoried.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When the Xbox PC app makes sense
- You use Windows and mainly want to launch games that are already installed.
- You prefer a straightforward library and a “Most Recent” shortcut over extensive customization.
- You want to hide storefronts you do not use while keeping supported sources visible.
- You already use Xbox or Game Pass and want those games alongside supported PC-store installations.
Where expectations should be limited
Do not select the Xbox PC app solely because you want a complete ownership database. The cited behavior is explicitly about installed games. Also, an aggregated entry does not mean the Xbox app controls another store’s installer, patch process, cloud-save system or account settings.
Keep original store clients for platform functions
Even after choosing an aggregator, retain the clients that your games depend on. They may be required for:
- Downloading a title for the first time.
- Applying updates or repairing files.
- Synchronizing cloud saves.
- Authenticating an account or subscription.
- Managing downloadable content, refunds or platform-specific settings.
A practical setup is to use one manager as your front door and let the original clients work in the background when needed. This avoids the common mistake of assuming that a unified library also unifies every service operation.
Decide whether you need an inventory or an installed-games launcher
Choose an inventory manager when your backlog matters
If you want to answer “What do I own?” across several stores, prioritize support for uninstalled entries, metadata, filters and custom views. Playnite and GOG GALAXY both document this broader collection use case.

Choose an installed-games launcher when speed of access matters
If your question is “What can I play right now on this PC?”, a simpler installed-game view may be enough. The Xbox PC app’s documented My Library and Most Recent behavior is designed around that situation.
Use both layers when your needs conflict
You do not have to force one application to do everything. A collection manager can track your full ownership, while an original client or a simpler launcher handles installation and day-to-day updates. The trade-off is maintaining more than one application, but it reflects how PC game licensing and services are actually distributed.
Set up a multi-store library without losing control
- List your stores and accounts. Write down which services contain owned games, subscriptions and free titles. This prevents you from judging a manager against a library it was never connected to.
- Decide whether uninstalled games must appear. If yes, select a manager whose documented features include uninstalled entries, rather than assuming every launcher imports ownership data.
- Connect only the integrations you need. Review the permissions and sign-in method for each service before linking it.
- Choose your organization system. Define a small set of tags such as “backlog,” “co-op,” “short session” or “complete” before creating dozens of inconsistent labels.
- Keep source clients installed. Do this for any store that supplies installation, updates, cloud saves or authentication that the manager does not provide.
- Test one game from each store. Confirm that the entry launches correctly and note which client opens. This is a compatibility check for your setup, not a claim that every integration behaves the same way.
- Review privacy and disconnect options. Playnite describes local library storage, while GOG describes removing imported account data after disconnecting a platform. Use the controls offered by the product you select.
- Choose your interface. At a desk, keyboard and mouse may be simplest. For couch play, Playnite’s documented full-screen controller support can make a controller-based setup practical; a controller is optional, not a requirement for managing a PC library.
Common problems and what they mean
A game appears but will not install
The manager may only have an ownership or launch record. Open the original store client and install the game there, then return to the manager for launching.
A game launches the wrong client
Check which integration supplied the entry and whether multiple launchers claim the same title. Keep the account that owns the license connected and use the source client for authentication.
An uninstalled game is missing
First determine whether the launcher promises to show uninstalled games. The Xbox announcement cited above documents installed titles; Playnite and GOG GALAXY document broader library listings. If the feature is supported, refresh the integration and verify that the correct account is connected.

Cloud saves are not synchronized
Use the store client that owns the game’s cloud-save service. Aggregated launchers do not necessarily expose or control those saves.
The library contains duplicates or stale metadata
Multiple integrations can import the same title, and metadata can change. Use tags or filters to separate editions, hide duplicates where the software allows it, and treat imported information as a convenience rather than a definitive product database.
Privacy, control and reliability considerations
Privacy claims differ by design. Playnite says library information is stored locally and that it does not store user information on remote servers. GOG says connected integrations handle imported account data and that the data can be removed after disconnecting a platform. These statements describe vendor policies; they are not equivalent to an independent security or privacy audit.
Reliability also needs a realistic definition. A launcher can be stable while a store changes its login flow, API or permissions. Because integrations and storefront support are volatile, check the current documentation and test the services you actually use before committing your entire workflow.
Recommendation by reader type
| If you primarily want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A complete, customizable multi-store inventory | Playnite | It documents broad integrations, uninstalled-game listings, extensions, themes, emulation, playtime tracking and controller-friendly full-screen mode. |
| Tags, filters, custom views and statistics | GOG GALAXY | Those collection tools are central to its documented feature set, with official and community integrations. |
| A simple Windows hub for installed games | Xbox PC app | Its documented My Library and Most Recent views automatically include installed games from supported storefronts. |
| Installation, updates and cloud saves | The original store client | The source service remains authoritative for platform-specific operations. |
Bottom line
Use Playnite when managing means unifying and customizing a large, multi-store collection. Use GOG GALAXY when browsing tools and statistics matter most. Use the Xbox PC app when you are on Windows and mainly need a clean list of installed games. In every case, keep the original store clients for the functions they uniquely provide, and judge integrations by the services and games you actually use rather than by a promise of universal control.
