Start with Auto select if your OnePlus phone offers it. It is the most sensible balance between motion smoothness and battery use because the phone chooses among the refresh-rate behaviors available to its software. If your phone has app-specific controls, reserve a higher rate for apps where scrolling or touch response looks noticeably better. Choose Standard when battery runtime matters more than the smoother feel of High. OnePlus says higher refresh rates use more battery, but its manuals do not publish a universal percentage saved by any mode.
What the refresh-rate setting changes
Refresh rate is the display setting that controls how often the screen can update its image, expressed in hertz (Hz). A higher rate can make scrolling, animations and touch interactions appear smoother. OnePlus describes the benefit this way: “A higher refresh rate gives you a smoother image quality and control.” The cost is energy consumption: OnePlus also warns that higher refresh rates drain the battery faster.

The setting is a trade-off, not a promise that every app will run at the panel’s maximum rate. The phone, its software and the app all affect what you actually see. Some applications may be limited to 60 Hz for compatibility, even when the display and system setting support a higher option.
OnePlus modes: Auto select, Standard and High
| Mode | What it is best for | Battery and smoothness trade-off | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto select | A balanced everyday setting | Lets the phone select an appropriate behavior instead of locking you to the highest rate | The OxygenOS 14 manual lists the mode but does not publish its exact selection algorithm or guarantee a specific battery result. |
| Standard | Maximum priority for battery runtime | Uses the standard refresh behavior; OnePlus says it is capable of everyday use with better battery-life performance | Motion may look less fluid than High, particularly while scrolling. |
| High | People who notice and value the smoothest available motion | Can make supported motion feel smoother, while using more battery than a standard rate | High does not force every app to use the panel maximum; compatibility limits can still apply. |
OnePlus’s OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual summarizes the battery side directly: “A standard refresh rate is more than capable of handling your everyday use with a better battery life performance.” Treat that as a qualitative comparison. The manual does not provide a controlled test, a battery-life percentage or a universal saving figure for switching modes.

How to change the screen refresh rate
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & brightness.
- Choose Screen refresh rate.
- Select Auto select, Standard or High, depending on the options shown on your phone.
- Return to the app or screen where you care about motion and check the result before making further changes.
This path is the general one documented for OxygenOS 14. Labels and placement can differ on another OnePlus model or software version. If you cannot find the panel, use the Settings search field and enter refresh rate, then check the manual for your exact model.
Best setting for each priority
For a balanced default: Auto select
Choose Auto select first when it is available. It avoids permanently locking the display to High while preserving the phone’s own ability to select a smoother behavior where the software considers it useful. This is a practical starting point, not a measured guarantee that it will always deliver the longest runtime or the highest rate.
After selecting Auto select, test the activities you perform most: scrolling through long lists, moving between home screens and using touch-heavy interfaces. If the screen feels sufficiently fluid and your runtime is acceptable, there is no reason to lock the phone to High.

Use Standard when battery endurance is more important than maximum visual fluidity. It is the clearest choice for a long travel day, a shift away from a charger or a phone that already struggles to last through your routine. OnePlus specifically presents the standard rate as adequate for everyday use with better battery performance.

Standard may feel less responsive during fast scrolling or animated transitions. That is a perceptual trade-off, not evidence that the phone is malfunctioning. Give yourself a few minutes to adapt before deciding whether the change is acceptable.
For selective smoothness: High with app-specific control
If your phone shows App-specific refresh rate, select High first and then customize individual apps. Keep a higher rate for apps where you can clearly see or feel a benefit, such as frequently scrolled or highly interactive interfaces. Set a lower rate for apps in which the extra smoothness is difficult to notice or irrelevant to how you use them.
This approach uses the control for its intended purpose: putting the smoother behavior where it matters instead of applying it indiscriminately. The recommendation is based on how the control works, not on a laboratory measurement of a particular app’s battery cost.
How app-specific refresh rates work
On phones that expose the control, the app list appears after you choose High. Select an app and review the rates offered for that device. A Nord CE4 Lite manual documents choices of 60, 90 and 120 Hz in its app-specific controls. Those values must not be treated as universal: another OnePlus model may expose different rates, fewer choices or no per-app panel at all.

- Go to Settings > Display & brightness > Screen refresh rate.
- Tap High.
- If shown, open App-specific refresh rate.
- Review each listed application and choose from the rates your phone actually provides.
- Use a higher option only where the difference is useful in your normal routine; choose a lower option where it is not.
- Recheck the list after a major system update, because available controls can change with the model and software version.
The menu itself is the authority for your handset. Do not select a rate that is absent from the list, and do not assume that a phone advertised with a high maximum refresh rate offers the same per-app choices as another model.
Why High may not make every app smoother
Android and individual applications can impose compatibility limits. OnePlus’s Android 12 system introduction notes that some apps support only 60 Hz. In those apps, selecting High at the system level does not guarantee that content will be rendered at the display’s highest available rate.
Video content is another reason the screen may not appear to use its maximum rate continuously. The refresh-rate setting governs what the display and software can do; it does not rewrite the frame rate of content supplied by an app. Judge the setting by supported scrolling and animation in the apps you actually use, rather than by expecting every screen to look identical.

If an app appears capped, first check whether the app-specific list assigns it a lower value. If no override exists, the limitation may be part of the app’s compatibility behavior. High remains useful for other parts of the interface, but it cannot guarantee a universal maximum.

A practical way to choose without guessing
- Identify your priority: decide whether you are solving a visibly choppy interface or trying to extend time between charges.
- Start with Auto select: use it when available and observe normal scrolling, touch interactions and transitions.
- Move to Standard if runtime wins: choose it when the smoothness improvement is minor compared with the battery trade-off.
- Use High selectively: enable it when the visual benefit is obvious, then lower rates for apps where you do not notice one.
- Check real app behavior: a setting can be correct while an individual app remains at 60 Hz for compatibility.
- Change one thing at a time: switching modes and several app overrides together makes it harder to tell which choice affected your experience.
Keep a simple observation over one ordinary usage period: note whether scrolling feels better, whether touch-heavy apps benefit and whether the phone reaches your usual charging point with less remaining battery. This is a personal comparison, not a universal battery test. Your result depends on the model, software, apps and how much time you spend on motion-heavy screens.

The Screen refresh rate menu is not in the documented location
OnePlus states that features can vary across models and versions. Search Settings for refresh rate and check the manual for your exact device and OxygenOS release. The OxygenOS 14 path is a useful reference, not a promise that every handset uses identical wording.
High is available but App-specific refresh rate is not
Per-app controls are optional. The OxygenOS 14 manual says some phones provide them; it does not say that every OnePlus phone does. If the sub-menu is absent, use Auto select, Standard or High at the system level and accept the software’s built-in app behavior.
The phone still feels less smooth after selecting High
Confirm that the app is not one of the applications limited to 60 Hz for compatibility. Test the home screen and a scrolling interface as a control. If those are smoother but one app is not, the app’s behavior is the more likely explanation. If the whole interface is unchanged, verify that the selection was saved and that your model’s display supports the rate shown in its own settings.
Best Value
Battery life is worse than expected
Return to Auto select or Standard and compare your normal routine. There is no official universal percentage that predicts how much battery a particular phone will save, so a precise expectation would be unsupported. High can consume more power, but the effect you experience varies with screen-on time, applications and software behavior.
How model and software version affect the answer
The documented path and three-mode list come from the OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual. A current US OxygenOS 16 page discusses software features such as Flow Motion and smoother app opening and closing, but those promotional descriptions are not evidence of a measured battery improvement from a refresh-rate toggle. They also do not replace the manual for your specific phone.
OnePlus explicitly cautions: “This feature may vary across different models and versions.” That qualification applies to the menu labels, available modes, app-specific controls and rate values. Check the phone in your hand rather than importing settings from a different OnePlus model, region or OxygenOS release.
Quick decision table
| Your situation | First setting to try | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| You want a sensible everyday compromise | Auto select | It preserves the phone’s own selection behavior without locking the display to High | Your model actually lists Auto select and your usual apps feel smooth enough. |
| You need the best battery runtime | Standard | OnePlus describes the standard rate as adequate for everyday use with better battery performance | Whether the reduced fluidity is acceptable during scrolling and transitions. |
| You care about smooth scrolling in selected apps | High, then App-specific refresh rate if offered | It puts the higher behavior where you notice it instead of applying one choice everywhere | The rates shown for each app; they are model-specific. |
| An app remains at 60 Hz | Keep your preferred system mode, but do not force an expectation | Some apps are limited to 60 Hz for compatibility | Whether the limitation is app-specific rather than a phone-wide setting failure. |
Bottom line for OnePlus owners
Use Auto select as the default when your phone offers it. Choose Standard when battery life is the priority, and choose High only when smoother motion is valuable enough to justify higher consumption. If available, app-specific refresh rates let you keep that smoother behavior where it matters while avoiding it in less interactive apps. Because OnePlus does not publish a universal battery-saving percentage and software compatibility can cap individual apps at 60 Hz, evaluate the setting on your exact model and the apps you actually use.
