For dependable automated notes, choose a stable folder convention, send an explicit vault-relative destination when the workflow knows where a note belongs, and use Obsidian’s default-location setting only when placement should be controlled centrally. Obsidian URI supports both approaches, plus content insertion, append, overwrite, and daily-note actions.
Start with the destination decision
Obsidian automation becomes easier to maintain when every note-creation request has an intentional placement rule. The Obsidian URI new action gives you two documented ways to choose that placement:

These are practical consequences of the documented URI behavior, not competing Obsidian standards. Pick one policy per automation, and document it beside the workflow so a later folder change does not silently redirect notes.

Settings that directly affect automated creation
Default location for new notes
Obsidian’s Default location for new notes preference controls a new URI request that supplies only name. Set it deliberately if you want short requests and centralized control. In Obsidian, open Settings, find the preference by searching for “Default location for new notes,” and select the folder your unsorted or general-purpose notes should enter.

Use this setting for workflows whose destination is genuinely generic. It is a poor substitute for explicit routing when one automation creates project notes and another creates meeting notes; both would follow the same default unless their requests include a destination.
Daily notes core plugin
The daily URI action creates or opens the daily note for a date. The Daily notes core plugin must be enabled before that action can work. Enable the plugin in Settings → Core plugins (the exact navigation grouping can vary by Obsidian release), then configure the Daily notes options that your vault uses.
The daily action accepts the same parameters as new. That means an automation can still provide content and an explicit file or path when appropriate. Do not assume that a daily-note request will work merely because ordinary note creation works; the plugin dependency is separate.

Obsidian’s URI documentation warns that reserved characters must be percent-encoded. Encode every parameter value, especially folder separators and spaces, before handing the URI to a browser, script, shortcut, or automation service. A slash in a vault-relative file value can be represented as %2F, a space as %20, and a line break in content as %0A.

Encoding is applied to values, not to the URI delimiters themselves. Keep the ?, &, and = characters that structure the request, while encoding characters inside the vault name, filename, path, and content. Incorrect encoding can cause a folder separator to be read as part of a filename, split a parameter unexpectedly, or truncate the supplied text.
Append and overwrite behavior
A new request can include note content. If the target already exists, append adds the supplied content to it; overwrite replaces it when the file exists and append is not set. The URI reference documents these mechanics but does not prescribe a universal policy.

- Use append when every run is an additional event, such as a chronological capture or a log entry.
- Use overwrite when the generated note is a complete, reproducible snapshot and old content should not survive.
- Use a unique filename when each run must remain independent. The documentation does not establish a collision-safe naming scheme, so your workflow must generate and verify uniqueness.
A folder convention that automation can understand
Obsidian does not establish a universal folder taxonomy for automated notes. Treat any hierarchy as a workflow choice. The useful test is whether a person can predict the destination and whether an automation can derive it from stable fields such as project, date, or note type.

Separate routing roots from working content
Keep a small number of top-level folders with distinct purposes. For example, an organization might use the following structure:

This is an example convention, not an Obsidian requirement. You can use different names, fewer roots, or a completely flat vault. The important property is that each root has one routing meaning and that the meaning is written down.
Keep machine-routed folders stable
Once an automation writes to a path, renaming that folder creates a maintenance event. Either update every producer at the same time or place a stable routing folder above areas that may be reorganized. Avoid encoding a temporary view, person’s name, or year in a path unless that value is part of the note’s permanent identity.

Define a filename pattern for each automated note type. A date-based note might use an ISO-style date such as 2026-10-16; a project note might combine a project key and a short subject. Decide how spaces, punctuation, and duplicate names are handled before deploying the workflow. Obsidian’s URI reference documents append and overwrite, but it does not define a general conflict-resolution policy for duplicate names.

Keep templates and attachments separate by policy
The available documentation does not establish current official recommendations for template settings, attachment folders, filename conflict behavior, or a universal hierarchy. If you create folders such as Templates/ or Attachments/, treat their locations and associated settings as decisions for your vault. Verify those choices against the Obsidian version and plugins you actually use rather than presenting them as mandatory configuration.
Build an automation step by step
- Classify the note. Decide whether the incoming item is a generic capture, a project record, a daily entry, or another defined type. If no reliable classification exists, send it to the default location or an Inbox folder.
- Choose the placement method. Use an explicit
fileorpathwhen the workflow knows the destination. Use onlynamewhen the vault’s default-location preference should decide. - Define the filename. Select a deterministic pattern or generate a unique identifier. Include enough context to identify the note without opening it.
- Prepare the content. Generate the body, headings, and metadata your workflow needs. Keep content generation separate from path generation so a folder change does not alter the note text.
- Percent-encode every value. Encode the vault name, file or path, filename, and content. Pay particular attention to spaces, slashes, line breaks, question marks, ampersands, and non-ASCII characters.
- Select write semantics. Set append for additive logs, overwrite for replaceable snapshots, or omit both while creating a unique target for independent records.
- Test with a disposable note. Confirm the resulting path, filename, character encoding, and repeat-run behavior before allowing the workflow to write into important folders.
- Record the contract. Document the action, required plugin, destination rule, filename pattern, and collision behavior where the automation is maintained.
URI patterns you can adapt
The following are illustrative patterns based on the documented Obsidian URI parameters. Replace the example vault and values, and encode the parameter values for your own request.
Explicit vault-relative file
obsidian://new?vault=Work&file=Projects%2FAtlas%2Fmeeting-notes.md&content=Agenda%0A%0A-%20Decision%3A%20Here, file identifies a path inside the selected vault. The encoded slashes preserve the folder structure, and encoded line breaks preserve the intended layout.
Default-location note by name
obsidian://new?vault=Work&name=Unsorted%20capture&content=Captured%20textBecause this request supplies a name but no explicit destination, Obsidian uses the vault’s Default location for new notes preference.
Appending to an existing note
obsidian://new?vault=Work&file=Inbox%2Factivity-log.md&content=%0A%0A2026-10-16%3A%20New%20event&append=trueUse this pattern only when preserving earlier entries is intentional. Add separators, dates, or headings in the generated content so repeated entries remain readable.
Overwriting a generated snapshot
obsidian://new?vault=Work&file=Projects%2FAtlas%2Fstatus.md&content=Current%20status&overwrite=trueOverwrite is appropriate for a note whose contents are regenerated from an authoritative source. It is destructive to manual edits in that file, so keep generated snapshots separate from notes people edit by hand.
Opening or creating a daily note
obsidian://daily?vault=Work&content=Today%27s%20automated%20entryThe Daily notes core plugin must be enabled for this action. The action can also receive the other parameters supported by new, allowing a workflow to supply a destination or write mode when its design requires one.

Repeated execution is where an otherwise successful automation becomes difficult to manage. Decide whether two runs represent one evolving record or two separate records. For an evolving record, make the target path stable and use append or overwrite deliberately. For separate records, include a stable event identifier or timestamp in the filename and ensure the identifier cannot collide.
Do not rely on a folder name alone to prevent duplicates. A retry after a network or application interruption may send the same URI again. If duplication matters, have the workflow check its own event identifier or choose overwrite for a deterministic target. Obsidian’s documented URI behavior gives you the write operations; the idempotency policy belongs to your automation.
Troubleshooting by symptom

What Obsidian does—and does not—standardize
Obsidian URI is a supported route for automation and cross-app workflows, including note creation. Its documented behavior establishes the destination parameters, content insertion, append and overwrite operations, encoding requirement, and the Daily notes plugin dependency.
It does not, in the material available here, establish one correct folder taxonomy, template configuration, attachment-folder setting, or collision-safe naming strategy for every vault. Those decisions should be treated as explicit workflow contracts. A good convention is therefore less about copying a prescribed tree and more about making each automated destination deterministic, encoded correctly, and understandable to the person who will maintain it.
