Before approving an OAuth prompt, verify the app and developer, read what each scope permits on that specific provider, prefer read-only or narrower access when it will do the job, and remove integrations you no longer use.
There is no universal OAuth permission dictionary. A scope name belongs to a particular provider and API, so a familiar word such as read, write or email can mean something different elsewhere.

What an OAuth permission actually is
OAuth lets an app obtain a token that can call a provider’s API on your behalf. The token is limited by the scopes you approve. A scope is a named permission group describing a category of data or an action, such as reading messages, viewing a profile field or posting to a channel.
GitHub describes scopes as named groups that constrain what a token can access. Google describes authorization scopes as strings identifying the service, the data involved and the level of access. Those definitions explain why the same-looking label cannot safely be interpreted across services: the provider and API define the boundary.

Scopes do not give the app more authority than you have
A granted scope is not an elevation of your account privileges. GitHub states that a token cannot gain capabilities the user does not already have; scopes further limit the token. If your account cannot perform an action, approving a scope does not change that. Conversely, a broad scope can let an app use every capability within your existing authority, which is why least privilege still matters.
Why scope names are not interchangeable
Providers design their own vocabulary, resource model and consent screens. Some names combine a resource with an action; others represent a data category or a policy classification. Treat every label as provider-specific and read the provider’s current explanation instead of inferring its meaning from the spelling.
| Provider or API | Example scope | Meaning documented by the provider | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub | user:email |
Read-only access to private email addresses | An example of one provider’s exact definition; it is not a model for similarly named scopes elsewhere. |
| Slack | channels:read |
Reading channels | Confirm the token type and the app’s requested scope in Slack’s documentation. |
| Slack | chat:write |
Posting messages | This is an action permission, not merely a request to view conversations. |
| Microsoft Graph | Mail.Read |
Reading mail | Microsoft uses it as an example of delegated access for an app that displays recent messages. |
| Microsoft Graph | Chat.Read |
Reading chat messages | Check the exact delegated-permission description shown for your app and account. |
| Google OAuth | Non-sensitive, sensitive and restricted categories | Policy classifications applied to groups of scopes | The category can affect developer review requirements; it does not by itself prove that an app is trustworthy. |
These examples illustrate a useful comparison method: identify the data category, distinguish reading from changing or sending, measure how broadly the scope reaches, check whether it matches the feature you selected, and note any sensitive or restricted classification.
Review an OAuth consent prompt step by step
Use the following sequence whenever an app asks to connect to an account. If a prompt omits enough information that you cannot complete these checks, pause rather than approving by default.
-
1. Identify the app and developer
Confirm that the displayed app is the one you intended to connect. Check the developer name, the app’s official help or product page and the context in which you opened the authorization flow. GitHub advises assessing whether you trust the application, who developed it and what information it wants to access. A familiar logo is not a substitute for verifying the developer identity.
-
2. Start with the feature you selected
State in plain language what you expect the connection to do: display a profile field, show recent messages, publish a message or perform another specific task. The permission request should have a credible connection to that outcome. If the feature only displays information, a request that permits changes, posting or deletion requires a clear explanation before you continue.

3. Read every requested scope
Expand collapsed permission details and separate the requests by data and action. Do not treat a screen that says “access your account” as sufficiently specific. Look for whether the app can read private data, create or modify content, send messages or access a broad collection of resources. Record any permission you cannot map to the feature you chose.

4. Check the provider’s current scope reference
Scope labels are not standardized. Open the provider’s current documentation for the exact API and token type shown in the prompt. Confirm whether the scope is read-only, what resources it covers and whether there are conditions or narrower alternatives. Provider policies and labels can change, so an old explanation or a search result for a different API may mislead you.
-
5. Prefer the narrowest available choice
Google’s OAuth guidance says an app should request the smallest set of scopes necessary for functionality knowingly chosen by the user. If the prompt offers separate checkboxes, select only the categories needed now. If the app supports connecting one resource instead of an entire account, choose the more limited route. A request for additional access later can be evaluated when you actually use that feature.
-
6. Decide, then verify what was granted
Use granular choices when the provider offers them. After approval, inspect the account’s connected-app or security page and confirm that the granted scopes match what you intended. Google recommends explaining requests, using incremental authorization and checking which scopes were granted. Consent behavior varies by provider and by app flow, so do not assume that declining one item automatically declined all access.
How to judge the scope itself
Use five questions to turn a long permission list into a concrete decision.

What data category is involved?
Separate public information from private account data, communications, contacts, files or other sensitive records. The more personal or confidential the category, the more specific the app’s explanation should be. A permission to read a private email address is materially different from one that reads an entire mailbox, even though both are “read” requests.

Is the app reading, or can it act?
Read access lets an app retrieve information. Action scopes may allow posting, sending, editing or another change. The distinction is central: an app that merely displays recent messages should not need a posting permission without a stated feature that uses it. When both read and write scopes appear, evaluate each independently rather than accepting the bundle.
How broad is the resource boundary?
Some scopes name one resource type; others cover a wide set of account data. Ask whether the app needs all resources or only a subset. A connection limited to one channel, mailbox view or profile field is easier to justify than account-wide access. The exact boundary must come from the provider’s documentation and the prompt.
Does every scope match the feature?
Write a one-line justification for each requested item. For example: “This read permission supplies the address the app displays.” If you cannot write a credible sentence, ask the developer before approving. A permission that is merely convenient for the developer is not automatically necessary for you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs it marked sensitive or restricted?
Google distinguishes non-sensitive, sensitive and restricted scopes. Sensitive or restricted status can trigger additional review obligations for developers, but the label is not an end-user trust rating. Treat it as a signal to read the details carefully, verify the developer and demand a stronger feature-based explanation.
Real scope examples, explained
GitHub: user:email
GitHub documents user:email as read-only access to private email addresses. If an integration needs to associate your account with an email address, this scope may fit that stated function. It does not mean that every email-named permission on another service is read-only or limited to one address. Check the exact GitHub scope description and the app’s reason for requesting it.
Slack: channels:read versus chat:write
Slack uses channels:read as an example of reading channels and chat:write as an example of posting messages. Those names demonstrate a resource-action pattern: the first describes what can be viewed, while the second enables an action. An app that lists available channels may need the former; an app that sends notifications may need the latter. Confirm the token type and the exact scope requested, because Slack’s permission behavior depends on the app flow.

Microsoft Graph: Mail.Read and Chat.Read
Microsoft’s delegated-access primer uses Mail.Read and Chat.Read for an app that displays recent mail and chat messages. Both are read permissions, but they cover different communication stores. Approve them only when the app’s visible feature uses those stores. A request for a write or send permission would be a separate decision, not an implied part of reading.
Google scope categories
Google groups scopes into non-sensitive, sensitive and restricted categories. These classifications help explain the review burden placed on app developers, but they do not tell you whether a particular developer is honest or whether the requested set is proportionate. Read the individual scope descriptions and compare them with the feature rather than relying on the category alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a request looks too broad
Do not approve simply because the app will not continue without the permission. First, look for a narrower connection option, a per-feature authorization flow or documentation that explains the need. Google recommends incremental authorization: request additional scopes when the user invokes the feature that needs them, rather than asking for everything at first.
Ask the developer a precise question
Request the exact operation that uses each disputed scope, the data it reads or changes, and whether a read-only or narrower alternative exists. A credible answer should map the scope to a visible feature and identify the provider’s permission definition. Vague statements such as “we need full access to make it work” do not explain why every requested category is necessary.
Decline when the explanation does not hold
Choose “Cancel,” “Deny” or the provider’s equivalent if an extensive permission has no clear feature-based justification, the developer identity cannot be verified, or the app asks for change-making access while offering only a viewing feature. You can revisit the connection after obtaining better information; declining is safer than granting access you cannot evaluate.
Expect a feature to stop working after a refusal
Declining a required scope may prevent the connected feature from operating. That consequence is preferable to granting unrelated access. If the app later presents a narrower prompt, reassess the new request from the beginning instead of assuming it is safe because the app was previously denied.
Best Value
Review and revoke old authorizations
Authorization is not a one-time housekeeping task. Providers expose account-security or connected-app pages where you can inspect active integrations, tokens and granted permissions. GitHub recommends regularly reviewing authorized integrations and removing apps or tokens that have not been used recently.
Use a simple review checklist
- Recognize the app and remember why you connected it.
- Confirm that its current scopes still match the feature you use.
- Remove unused, abandoned or unrecognized integrations.
- Recheck permissions after an app changes its feature set or presents a new consent request.
Revocation can break the connected feature, and the location and effect of the control vary by provider. If an integration stops working after revocation, reconnect only after checking the current scope list; do not restore an old grant automatically.
Common decision patterns
An app wants to display one account detail
Look for a narrowly defined read scope covering that detail. A request for posting, editing or broad account access is disproportionate unless the app documents a separate feature that uses it.

Verify which message store is involved and whether the permission is read-only. Microsoft Graph’s Mail.Read and Chat.Read examples show why mail and chat should be evaluated as separate data categories.
An app wants to send notifications
Sending requires an action permission, not merely a viewing permission. Slack’s chat:write example illustrates the distinction. Confirm the destination, who controls the content and whether the app can post more broadly than the feature requires.
An app requests several scopes at once
Break the bundle into individual justifications. Approve only the scopes needed for the feature you are using now, and prefer an incremental prompt for optional features. A provider’s single “Allow all” button does not turn unrelated scopes into one necessary permission.
A practical allow, pause or decline framework
| Decision | Use it when | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Allow | You recognize the developer, understand every scope, and each one is the narrowest practical match for the feature. | Approve the selected permissions, then verify the resulting grant in account settings. |
| Pause | You recognize the app but cannot explain a scope, the request is broader than the visible feature, or the provider’s wording is unclear. | Read the provider reference, check the app’s help material and ask the developer for a scope-by-scope explanation. |
| Decline | The developer cannot be verified, the request includes unjustified change-making access, or the app will not explain extensive access. | Cancel the flow and look for a narrower alternative. Reconsider only if the request changes and you can evaluate it. |
What OAuth permission labels can and cannot tell you
A scope tells you the API boundary the provider has defined; it does not, by itself, establish that the app is reputable, secure or well maintained. Trust still depends on the developer identity, the feature context and the explanation for the requested data. Conversely, a familiar provider classification such as “sensitive” or “restricted” is not proof of abuse. Use the label as one input in a broader review.

Official guidance is principally about policy and implementation, not a universal numerical risk score. There is no provider-independent threshold at which a permission is automatically safe or unsafe. The defensible decision is always tied to the exact app, account, API, token type and feature you are authorizing.
Before you click Allow
- Can you name the app and verify its developer?
- Can you describe the feature you selected in one sentence?
- Can you explain every requested scope in terms of that feature?
- Are any permissions able to post, send, edit or otherwise change data when you expected only viewing?
- Is there a narrower, read-only or incremental option?
- Did you read the provider’s current definition for this exact scope and API?
- Will you remember to review and revoke the grant if you stop using the integration?
If any answer is no, pause the authorization. The safest OAuth approval is the smallest, clearly explained grant that enables the function you intentionally chose.
