For most gamers, keep NVIDIA shader caching enabled and choose a finite Shader Cache Size that fits the games you regularly play without crowding your drive. A large enough cap helps retain compiled shaders; a cap that is too small can evict shaders you still need and contribute to stutter. Unlimited is valid when you have generous free space, but NVIDIA does not document it as a universal performance upgrade.
The right value depends on your game library, how much storage is available, and whether you frequently rotate through demanding titles. There is no single setting that NVIDIA identifies as optimal for every computer.

What NVIDIA shader caching does
Modern games use shaders—small programs that describe how the GPU should render lighting, materials, shadows, post-processing and other visual effects. Before a game can use a shader, the driver may need to compile it for your particular graphics hardware and driver combination. That compilation can occur during loading screens or while you are moving through a game world, producing pauses that feel like stutter.
NVIDIA’s shader cache stores the compiled versions on your drive. When the same game requests those shaders again, the driver can reuse the stored files instead of compiling them from scratch. The benefit is mainly on later runs or after revisiting content, not a guaranteed increase in average frames per second.

NVIDIA identifies Shader Cache Size as a Control Panel setting introduced in Release 495. The setting controls the maximum disk space the driver may use for these cached shaders. It is a storage limit, not a direct GPU-performance or image-quality control.
Where to change Shader Cache Size
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Select Manage 3D settings in the navigation pane.
- Choose the Global Settings tab if you want one default for all games, or use Program Settings to configure a particular title.
- Find Shader Cache Size, select a value, and click Apply.
The choices shown can vary with the installed driver and software version. NVIDIA’s reference list includes Disabled, Unlimited, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB and 100 GB.
How the available settings differ
| Setting | What it permits | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Disabled | Turns off the driver’s shader cache. | Shaders are not retained for reuse by this cache, so later runs lose that source of compiled-shader reuse. |
| 128 MB | Allows up to 128 MB of cached shaders. | May be adequate for a small selection of older or less demanding games, but leaves little room for a varied modern library. |
| 256 MB | Allows up to 256 MB. | A small finite limit; games with larger shader requirements can reach it quickly. |
| 512 MB | Allows up to 512 MB. | More room than the smallest caps, while still imposing a strict ceiling. |
| 1 GB | Allows up to 1 GB. | A moderate finite choice for players who want a defined storage budget. |
| 5 GB | Allows up to 5 GB. | Provides substantially more room for several regularly played titles. |
| 10 GB | Allows up to 10 GB. | Useful when you rotate through many large games and have the free space to reserve. |
| 100 GB | Allows up to 100 GB. | A very high ceiling that reduces capacity pressure but can reserve considerable storage over time. |
| Unlimited | Removes the configured cache-size ceiling. | Avoids size-based eviction by the configured limit, but gives the cache no fixed storage budget. |
These values are limits, not promises that the cache will immediately consume the entire amount. The driver uses space as shaders are generated and removes older entries when a finite cache approaches its limit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoosing a finite cache size
Start with the amount of free space you can comfortably dedicate, then consider the number and size of games you play. NVIDIA says requirements vary substantially and that higher-end games may require several hundred megabytes. That guidance argues against the smallest caps for a modern library, but it does not establish that every player needs 10 GB, 100 GB or Unlimited.

A small, stable library
If you mainly play one or two games and keep plenty of free space elsewhere on the drive, a moderate finite value such as 1 GB or 5 GB gives the cache room to retain compiled data while keeping a visible storage boundary. The exact choice should reflect your available space rather than a claim that one of those numbers is universally faster.
A rotating library of demanding games
Players who alternate among many large, frequently updated titles are more likely to fill a low cap. A 5 GB or 10 GB limit leaves more room before older entries are removed. Select the larger value only if that storage allowance does not interfere with operating-system updates, game installations, recording files or other work.
A drive with limited free space
Use a smaller finite value when storage is tight. Shader caching should not crowd the drive to the point that Windows, a game launcher or a game cannot create temporary files. A cache that fits your actual free-space budget is preferable to a nominally larger setting that leaves the system short of working room.
Should you use Unlimited?
Unlimited is an option, not a benchmark-backed recommendation. NVIDIA lists it but does not provide comparative test results on its help page showing that Unlimited delivers higher frame rates or lower latency than a sufficiently large finite cap.

Unlimited can make sense when you have ample free space, play many shader-heavy games and prefer not to manage a ceiling. Its trade-off is the loss of a defined upper bound: the cache can grow as new shaders are created, and you must monitor storage yourself. If you need predictable disk usage, choose a finite value instead.
Why a cache that is too small can stutter
When a finite cache approaches its limit, the driver removes older shaders to make room for newer ones. If a game still needs an evicted shader, it may have to compile that shader again. NVIDIA warns that setting the limit too small may cause the driver to remove shaders you still use and contribute to gameplay stutters.
That warning describes a capacity problem, not proof that caching itself causes stutter. Disabling the cache removes the possibility of cache eviction, but it also removes the later-run reuse that the cache is designed to provide. For ordinary gaming, NVIDIA’s explanation supports leaving caching enabled and avoiding an unnecessarily small cap.

What happens after a driver installation
Installing a new NVIDIA driver clears the shader cache. The first launch of a game after that installation can therefore stutter while shaders are compiled again. This is expected cache rebuilding, not evidence that the new driver or your selected size is automatically defective.

After updating the driver
- Install the driver and allow the system to restart if requested.
- Launch a game and allow its initial loading or shader-preparation process to finish.
- Play long enough for commonly visited areas and effects to be encountered again.
- Judge later sessions rather than the first post-install run, because the cache starts empty after the update.
If the same severe stutter continues across later sessions, investigate the individual game’s shader-compilation behavior, graphics settings and driver compatibility instead of assuming that changing the cache cap will solve every cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can changing the setting improve FPS?
NVIDIA’s help documentation explains cache reuse, capacity and eviction, but it does not publish a universal benchmark showing that one listed size raises average FPS over another. Shader caching primarily targets repeated compilation work and the interruptions that can accompany it. A larger cap may prevent avoidable re-compilation when a smaller cap would evict active shaders, yet that is different from increasing the rendering throughput of the GPU.
Because no universal optimum is established, treat the setting as a storage-and-reuse decision. Change it when you observe capacity pressure, storage constraints or a need for a fixed disk budget—not because a particular number is guaranteed to produce more frames.
A practical decision process
- Keep caching enabled. Do not select Disabled unless you have a specific troubleshooting reason or a workflow that requires no retained shader files.
- Check free space on the drive used by the cache. Leave room for the operating system, launchers, updates and game temporary files.
- Count your regular games. One or two titles place less demand on a shared cache than a library of many large games.
- Start with a finite value. Use a moderate limit that fits your storage plan; move upward if you rotate through demanding games and encounter repeated eviction pressure.
- Use Unlimited only deliberately. Select it when the drive has generous headroom and an uncapped cache is more convenient than a fixed allowance.
- Reassess after a driver update. Expect a temporary first-run rebuild because the installation clears the cache.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
Stutter appears only on the first run after a driver update
That timing matches NVIDIA’s documented cache-clearing behavior. Give the game time to rebuild its shaders and compare subsequent sessions before changing the limit.
Best Value
Stutter returns after switching among many games
A low finite cap may be evicting older shaders as new games populate the cache. Move to a larger finite value if the drive can support it, or consider Unlimited with active storage monitoring.
The drive is running low on space
Reduce the cache limit to a value that preserves working room, or clean up other storage first. Do not keep a very high cap merely because it is available in the menu.
You are testing whether the cache is involved
Record the game, driver version, cache setting and when the stutter occurs. Change one variable at a time, then test later runs rather than judging only the first launch after a driver installation. The Control Panel setting itself does not identify which game produced each cached shader, so observations should be tied to your own play pattern.

| Your situation | Starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Typical gamer with adequate free space | Enabled with a moderate finite cap | Retains shader reuse while keeping storage bounded. |
| Many demanding games and substantial free space | 5 GB or 10 GB, or Unlimited | Reduces the chance that a shared cache fills quickly; Unlimited removes the configured ceiling. |
| Limited storage | Enabled with the largest finite cap your free-space budget allows | Preserves reuse without allowing the cache to compete with essential files. |
| Diagnosing a specific problem | Change one setting at a time and retest later sessions | Separates cache-capacity effects from first-run compilation and game-specific causes. |
The bottom line on NVIDIA shader cache settings
Leave shader caching enabled for normal gaming. Choose a finite limit that is large enough for your regular games and compatible with your available disk space; move to a larger cap when a varied, demanding library is likely to cause eviction. Unlimited is reasonable when storage is abundant and you accept an uncapped allowance, but NVIDIA provides no evidence that it is inherently faster. Remember that every driver installation clears the cache, so a first-run stutter afterward is a rebuilding phase rather than a reliable test of the setting.
