Start with the NVIDIA App’s per-game optimization, then change only the feature that addresses your actual limitation. Use DLSS Super Resolution when the GPU is spending too much time rendering, Frame Generation or Smooth Motion when you need more displayed motion, and Reflex when input latency is the problem. These controls are not interchangeable, and there is no universal best preset: the right choice depends on the game, GPU generation, CPU, display, resolution and whether you prioritize image quality, responsiveness or smoothness.
Measure every change in the game you actually play. The NVIDIA App overlay can show FPS, 1% low FPS, GPU and CPU utilization, and system latency, giving you a practical way to compare repeatable scenes.

What to change first
- Update the NVIDIA App and driver. Open the App and check both update prompts. NVIDIA describes Game Ready Drivers as developed with game developers and tested for game releases, but a new driver is not guaranteed to increase FPS in every title. The App also identifies your GPU and other hardware details. NVIDIA App
- Select the game in Graphics. The App’s cloud-based optimizer considers your GPU, CPU and display and supplies personalized settings. Apply them as a baseline, then review each setting against your own target rather than assuming the recommendation is optimal for every player. NVIDIA App
- Record a repeatable baseline. Use the same save point, benchmark, race or match section and note average FPS, 1% lows, GPU utilization, CPU utilization and latency. Change one setting at a time so you can identify its effect.

DLSS Super Resolution: the usual GPU-performance adjustment
Use DLSS Super Resolution when the GPU is the bottleneck. It lowers the game’s internal input resolution and uses reconstruction to produce the output resolution. In a supported game, open the game’s graphics menu, enable DLSS Super Resolution and choose a quality/performance mode. The mode is a trade-off, not a universal ranking: a lower internal resolution can increase FPS while reducing fine detail or clarity, especially on a high-resolution or large display.

These percentages describe rendering input, not benchmark results. Start with the highest-quality mode that meets your FPS target, then inspect foliage, motion, thin geometry and text in your own game. If your GPU is not near full utilization, lowering render resolution may provide little benefit because the CPU, simulation, streaming or another limit is controlling performance. Current model-preset override
For current DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution model presets, NVIDIA’s release highlights direct this path: Graphics > Program Settings > Driver Settings > DLSS Override – Model Presets > Recommended. The control requires the relevant NVIDIA App and driver support, and the game must expose or use the corresponding DLSS feature. Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation
Frame-generation features create additional displayed frames; they do not make the game’s simulation or input processing run at the same rate. They can make motion look smoother, but a higher displayed FPS number does not by itself prove lower latency. Keep a sufficiently responsive rendered baseline and judge the result in actual gameplay.

Native DLSS Frame Generation
Use the game’s native DLSS Frame Generation option when the title and GPU support it. Confirm that the game’s own implementation is enabled before trying an App override. Requirements vary by title and GPU generation, so the control may not appear on every system.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation
NVIDIA’s current DLSS 4.5 article describes a Dynamic Multi Frame Generation override for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs. In the App, use Graphics > Program Settings > DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode, choose Dynamic, then select a display-refresh target or a custom target. NVIDIA says Dynamic mode is currently incompatible with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync. Disable those conflicting controls when testing Dynamic mode, or use a different generation mode if your synchronization setup is more important.
The same article reports up to 35% higher 4K frame rates when moving from 4X to 6X Multi Frame Generation in path-traced titles. This is NVIDIA’s maximum vendor claim for the stated RTX 50 Series scenario, not an independent benchmark or a result guaranteed in every game. Smooth Motion: an alternative when a game lacks native generation
Smooth Motion is a driver-based AI model that infers an additional frame between rendered frames. Configure it per game at Graphics > Program Settings > select a compatible game > Driver Settings > Smooth Motion. Compatibility has expanded across supported GPU generations and graphics APIs, but the exact list depends on your current App, driver, GPU and title.

Reflex: change this when responsiveness matters
NVIDIA Reflex targets system latency rather than image reconstruction or displayed-frame count. It synchronizes CPU and GPU work to reduce latency, making it especially relevant to competitive games. Enable Reflex in the game’s own settings when the title provides it, then use the App overlay’s latency readout to compare the result.

Do not treat generated FPS as a substitute for Reflex. Frame Generation and latency reduction address different outcomes: generation can add visible frames, while Reflex is intended to improve the time between your input and the resulting image. A game can look smoother without feeling more immediate.

Resizable BAR
NVIDIA’s release highlights document a per-application Resizable BAR control at Graphics > Program Settings > Driver Settings > Resizable BAR. Use it only when your platform and game support it, and compare measured performance. Legacy filtering and frame-rate controls
Advanced per-game controls include anisotropic filtering, texture filtering, antialiasing options, background-application maximum frame rate and PhysX GPU selection. These are not universal “best FPS” switches. Change one only when you understand the game’s own setting, record the baseline and revert it if image quality, frame pacing or stability worsens. How to test a change without fooling yourself
- Choose a repeatable workload. Use a built-in benchmark or the same route through a demanding area. Avoid comparing a quiet menu scene with a combat scene.
- Open the overlay metrics. Track FPS, 1% low FPS, GPU utilization, CPU utilization and system latency. A high average FPS with poor 1% lows may indicate stutter rather than insufficient average throughput.
- Change one variable. For example, test DLSS Quality before testing Performance; do not also change shadows, a frame limiter and generation mode in the same run.
- Inspect the image. Look for shimmering, ghosting, disocclusion artifacts, blurry text and UI problems while moving the camera.
- Test the final configuration in real play. A benchmark can show throughput, but only gameplay reveals whether responsiveness and visual artifacts are acceptable.
The overlay and optimization controls are features of the NVIDIA App; the procedure above is a practical way to isolate effects, not a controlled laboratory benchmark.
Compatibility and driver checklist
- GPU generation: DLSS, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation and Smooth Motion do not have identical hardware requirements. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation in the cited DLSS 4.5 release is for GeForce RTX 50 Series.
- Game support: A setting may be absent because the title does not implement the feature or the App does not list it as compatible.
- App and driver version: NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 feature article specifies GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer for the described features. Install the required version before troubleshooting a missing option.
- Graphics API and display: Smooth Motion compatibility varies by API, while Dynamic generation can target display refresh. Your monitor’s refresh rate therefore affects which target makes sense.
- Synchronization conflicts: NVIDIA documents Dynamic Multi Frame Generation as incompatible with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync. Native Frame Generation and Smooth Motion must not be combined.
Common mistakes and recovery steps
The App recommendation feels wrong
Return to the per-game profile, note which values were applied and change only the setting tied to your goal. The optimizer uses your reported GPU, CPU and display, but it cannot know whether you personally prefer maximum detail, low latency or a specific frame-rate target.
FPS rises but the game feels no better
Check whether the GPU was actually the bottleneck. If GPU utilization was low, DLSS may not address the limit. If generated frames raised the counter without improving responsiveness, enable Reflex where supported and evaluate latency separately.

Verify the title, GPU generation, App version and driver. Install the required Game Ready Driver, restart the App and revisit the per-game Driver Settings menu. A missing control can be an intentional compatibility limitation rather than a fault.
Artifacts or worse performance appear
Disable the most recent change, especially if Smooth Motion and native Frame Generation were both enabled. For Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, remove conflicting frame limiters and V-Sync only if that trade-off suits your display; otherwise return to a supported generation mode. Re-test with the same scene.
