Start with recovery and account safeguards, then decide how you want private apps, camera recording feedback and contactless payments to behave. On a new Nothing Phone (4a), the highest-value sequence is: enable Find Hub, configure Private Space, review the camera’s Rec.light, enable NFC only if it is available and useful in your region, transfer data deliberately, and check the actual system-update screen. The best display, battery and Glyph choices depend on your priorities; Nothing’s official guidance does not define one setting that is right for everyone.
Do these checks before customising the look of the phone
Settings names can move as Nothing OS changes, so use the labels on your handset if they differ slightly. The following order protects your data before you spend time adjusting appearance.

| Priority | Setting | Why it comes first |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Find Hub | It is your main recovery route if the phone is lost. |
| 2 | Private Space | It separates sensitive apps, files and photos from the normal launcher. |
| 3 | Rec.light | You can decide whether the visible camera-recording indicator suits you. |
| 4 | NFC | Turn it on for supported contactless uses, but availability depends on region. |
| 5 | Data transfer | A deliberate copy avoids missing accounts, photos or messages during setup. |
| 6 | System updates | Install the stable software available to your device and treat beta builds as optional testing software. |
1. Enable Find Hub while the phone is in your hands
Nothing’s recovery instructions place the control at Settings > Security and Privacy > Device Finders > Find Hub. Turn it on and confirm that the phone is signed in to your Google Account.

What Find Hub can—and cannot—do
Find Hub is useful for locating, securing or managing a misplaced phone, but enabling the switch is not a guarantee that the handset can be found. Nothing lists three practical requirements: the phone must be associated with a signed-in Google Account, switched on, and connected to mobile data or Wi‑Fi. A powered-down phone or one without a connection may not report its current position.

- Verify the Google Account shown in the phone’s account settings is the one you can access from another device.
- Keep a screen lock enabled; recovery features are more useful when the device itself is protected.
- Test the account sign-in before travelling rather than waiting until the phone is missing.
For the manufacturer’s current menu wording, see the Nothing Phone (4a) support collection.
2. Put genuinely sensitive material in Private Space
Nothing describes Private Space on Nothing OS as “a secure environment to store and manage sensitive apps, files and photos.” It is best understood as a separated area with an additional authentication method, not as an absolute security guarantee.
Open and configure it
- Open the launcher’s app drawer.
- Find Private Space and open it. Nothing’s instructions say you can also swipe right in the app drawer; in some regions the gesture is a left swipe instead.
- Choose a password, code or pattern when prompted, and add only the apps and files you actually want separated.
Apps in Private Space do not appear in the regular app list, recent-apps view or notifications. That makes it useful for a secondary messaging account, financial tools or personal photographs that you do not want mixed with everyday apps.
Choose separation over convenience
| Approach | Advantages | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Private Space | Additional authentication; hidden from the normal launcher, recents and notifications. | You must open a separate space and remember its credential. |
| Regular launcher | Fast access and normal notifications. | Apps and alerts remain visible alongside everything else. |
Do not use Private Space as your only copy of important information. Keep irreplaceable photos and documents backed up through a service you trust.
3. Decide whether the camera’s Rec.light default works for you
Nothing says Rec.light is enabled by default. It controls the visible recording indicator in the Camera interface, giving people nearby a clear signal when recording is active.
- Open Camera.
- Swipe down on the viewfinder, or tap the button in the top-right corner.
- Open Rec.light and leave it enabled or change it according to your preference.
Keeping the default is a reasonable choice when you want an obvious recording status. Changing it is a personal decision about the feedback you want on screen; the official instructions do not establish a universally better option.
4. Turn on NFC only when your region and use case support it
NFC is the radio used by supported contactless payments, access cards and device-to-device interactions. Nothing explicitly states that NFC is not available in India, so owners there will not see a working NFC switch regardless of other setup choices.

Enable it from Settings
- Go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > NFC.
- Turn on Use NFC.
Enable it from quick controls
Alternatively, expand the control centre and tap the NFC control. If the tile is not present, edit the control-centre layout or use the Settings route.
| Choice | Use it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| NFC enabled | You use a supported payment, transit, access or pairing service. | Your country, carrier and service provider support the feature. |
| NFC disabled | You do not use contactless functions or prefer the radio off. | You can re-enable it from Settings or the expanded control centre later. |
Availability and compatible services vary by region, so do not infer support from another country’s Phone (4a) menu.
5. Transfer data deliberately instead of accepting every category blindly
During setup, Nothing recommends using a Google Account to download apps and copy content from an old Android phone. Prepare both devices before starting: charge them, update the old Android phone, and connect them to reliable Wi‑Fi.
- On the Phone (4a), choose Set up using another device.
- Select Android device.
- Scan the QR code shown on the new phone with the old phone when prompted.
- Sign in with the requested Google Account.
- Review the categories offered and select what you want copied rather than assuming every item should move.
- Leave both phones nearby and connected until the process finishes.
Nothing estimates an Android-to-Android transfer at five minutes to one hour. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a promise: the amount of media, Wi‑Fi conditions and number of apps can change the duration. Keep the old phone available until you have checked photographs, contacts, messages and authenticator apps on the Phone (4a).

Use Settings > System > System updates to see what your particular handset can install now. This device-level screen is more reliable than a projected calendar because Nothing says rollout timing can change and that general releases are phased by region and, where applicable, carrier.
What Nothing published for Nothing OS 5.0
Nothing’s OS 5.0 page listed Phone (4a) for an indicative Open Beta in late September and an indicative general release in early November. The page identifies Frogger-B4.1-260808-1352 or later as the stable-build prerequisite for that beta. Those dates are estimates, not a guarantee that every phone receives the build at the same time.
Stable versus beta
| Channel | Best for | Risk and preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Stable release | People who need predictable calling, battery life and app compatibility. | Still install through the device’s update screen and keep normal backups. |
| Open Beta | Owners willing to test pre-release features and report problems. | Nothing warns of bugs and possible effects on stability, battery life and performance. Back up important data first. |
Do not join a beta solely because a date has appeared on a web page. Check your build number, read the on-device terms, and decide whether troubleshooting an unfinished release fits your tolerance for disruption. The published program details are on Nothing OS 5.0.

7. Add the call controls you actually need
Block a number
To block incoming calls and messages from a number, open Phone Dialer, tap the three-dot icon beside the search column, then choose Settings > Blocked Numbers > Add a Number. Enter the number and save it. This is a focused first-week setting if you are moving from a phone with an old block list.
Enable call waiting
If your operator supports call waiting, go to Phone Dialer > three-dot icon > Settings > Calling Accounts > Operator > Additional Settings > Call Waiting. Operator menus can differ, and the switch may be unavailable when the carrier does not provision the service.
8. Set language and region before installing lots of apps
System language controls menus and system prompts. The route is Settings > System > Language and Region > System languages. Set the language and region you actually use before configuring accessibility, keyboard dictionaries and voice features; changing it later can alter those choices.
9. Use the manufacturer’s charging guidance as a reference, not a promise
Nothing says the Phone (4a) can fully charge in approximately 64 minutes with the Nothing charger when the screen is off, room temperature is 25°C ±3°C, and a PPS-protocol charger is used. Treat that figure as manufacturer guidance under those stated conditions, not a universal result for every charger, cable, temperature or battery state.
- Use a compatible USB-C PPS charger if you want to follow the stated charging conditions.
- Keep the screen off during the charge if speed is the priority.
- Expect a different time in a hot or cold room, with a different charger, or while using the phone.
The Phone (4a) box contents listed by Nothing include a USB-C cable, a pre-applied screen protector and a protective case; a charger is not listed. If you need to buy one, verify current compatibility and availability rather than assuming a charger is included.

There is no documented universal “best” refresh-rate, brightness, battery-optimization, notification or Glyph configuration for every Phone (4a) owner. Start with the recovery, privacy, connectivity and update checks above, then adjust these areas based on a specific problem:
- Display: change brightness or refresh behavior if readability, smoothness or battery runtime is not meeting your needs.
- Battery: investigate an app or usage pattern before enabling aggressive restrictions that could delay notifications.
- Glyph: choose patterns and alerts that you can recognize without creating unwanted interruptions.
- Notifications: silence noisy apps after you see which ones are actually distracting you.
Changing everything on day one makes it difficult to identify which setting caused a missed alert, slower app or shorter battery life. Make one change, use the phone normally, and keep the previous value in mind so you can reverse it.
A simple first-day decision path
- Can you recover the phone if it disappears? Enable Find Hub, sign in and confirm power and connectivity requirements.
- Do any apps or files need separation? Set up Private Space and choose its authentication method.
- Do you record video in situations where a visible indicator matters? Review Rec.light in Camera.
- Do you use contactless services? Check regional NFC availability, then enable the switch if supported.
- Are you moving from Android? Charge both phones, update the old one, connect to good Wi‑Fi and select transfer categories deliberately.
- Are you considering beta software? Check the actual update screen, confirm the prerequisite build and back up before opting in.
- Which daily annoyance remains? Change only the relevant call, language, notification, display or Glyph control.
This order puts recoverability and data integrity ahead of cosmetic tuning, while leaving personal preferences flexible.
