Which Nothing OS settings should you change after updating? A model-aware checklist

There is no universal set of switches to change after every Nothing OS update. First confirm your phone model and installed build, then check for another system update. Next review camera, microphone and location permissions, and finally inspect Nothing features you actually use, such as Glyph controls or Bluetooth in Quick Settings. Menu names and feature availability can differ by model, region and build, so treat the paths below as a guide to verify on your own phone rather than a guarantee that every device shows every option.

Start with your model and installed build

An update package is not the same thing as a universal feature set. Nothing releases software in phases, sometimes by region or carrier, and its OS pages distinguish beta availability from general release. Before changing settings, open Settings and use the search field for About phone, Nothing OS or Build number. Record the model name and the complete software version. This prevents you from following a menu path intended for a different handset or a different build.

Use the same information when asking for help. A screenshot that includes the model and version is more useful than saying only that you have “the latest Nothing OS,” because the latest available build can differ between two countries or carriers.

1. Verify the installation and check for another update

Nothing’s support instructions put update checking under the System section. Depending on the build, the label appears as Settings > System > System Update or Settings > System > System updates. If the wording on your phone differs, search Settings for “system update” and open the matching result.

  1. Connect the phone to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Nothing recommends Wi-Fi for downloading and installing software.
  2. Charge the battery to at least 50% before starting the installation. This is a minimum procedural recommendation, not a prediction of battery life after the update.
  3. Open Settings > System > System Update/System updates.
  4. Read the displayed version and release notes, if available. Confirm that it is newer than the build you wrote down.
  5. If another update is offered, install it before judging whether a setting or feature is missing. Rollouts can arrive in stages, so a phone that says it is current today may show a newer package later.

Do not assume that a successful download means every advertised feature is present. Nothing describes rollout timing as indicative and subject to change, and carrier or regional distribution can affect what appears on the update screen.

2. Re-audit privacy permissions instead of changing them blindly

After a major release, review which apps can use sensitive sensors. Nothing’s OS 5.0 description calls out updated permission controls and privacy indicators for the camera, microphone and location. The exact dashboard and labels depend on the phone’s build, so search Settings for Privacy, Permission manager, Camera access, Microphone access and Location.

Check camera access

Look through the list of apps allowed to use the camera. Keep access for apps whose core function requires it, such as a camera or video-call app you trust. Change an app to “Ask every time” or deny access when it has no reason to capture images. If an app’s camera function stops working, return to the same permission screen and grant only the level of access you are comfortable with.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check microphone access

Review recording and voice-chat apps separately from the general microphone switch. Privacy indicators can show when the microphone is active; use that signal to investigate an unexpected access request rather than turning off microphone access for every app. A blanket revocation can break calls, voice notes, accessibility tools or voice controls that you intentionally use.

Check location access

Sort location permissions by the apps that have access all the time, only while in use, or not at all, if those choices are offered on your build. Navigation, weather and location-based safety tools may need access, while a utility that has no location feature usually does not. Recheck the setting after opening an app that legitimately needs location, because the operating system may ask for permission at first use.

Privacy indicators are signals, not proof that an app is malicious. Use the app’s purpose, its developer and the permission prompt together when deciding. The goal is an intentional permission list, not the largest possible list of denials.

Optional: use Private Space for sensitive apps and files

Nothing describes Private Space as a separately authenticated area for sensitive apps and files. Apps placed there are hidden from the normal app list, and their notifications are hidden as well. It is an optional privacy feature, not a required post-update change.

Nothing’s support route is Launcher > App drawer > Private Space. In some languages or regions, the direction used to reveal it can vary. If Private Space is not shown, check your model and build before assuming the installation failed; the feature may not be included or may use a different label.

3. Revisit the Nothing controls you actually use

Do not enable every new feature simply because it appears in release notes. Open the controls that matter to your daily use and confirm that your preferences survived the update.

Glyph settings

For devices with Glyph hardware, Nothing’s OS 5.0 description places Glyph controls in a central Glyph App. Open it and check the notification, contact, timer and brightness choices you rely on. If the app is absent, the feature may not have rolled out to your model or region, or the handset may not include Glyph hardware. Use the model and build information from the first step before troubleshooting further.

Bluetooth in Quick Settings

OS 5.0 also describes redesigned Bluetooth controls in Quick Settings. Pull down Quick Settings and inspect the Bluetooth tile. Confirm that your usual headphones, car system or other accessories are reachable from the new control and that the tile is not hidden on another page. The redesigned panel is an interface change, not a requirement to pair every device again. If a device is missing, open the phone’s regular Bluetooth settings and verify whether it is paired and connected there.

If you installed the Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta, use a different set of expectations

Nothing labels the OS 5.0 Open Beta as pre-release software. Its guidance warns that beta software can affect stability, battery life and performance, and recommends backing up important data before installation. Those cautions apply to the beta program; they are not a statement that every stable Nothing OS update will cause the same effects.

Back up before beta troubleshooting

Keep a current copy of photos, messages, authenticator data and other files that would be difficult to replace. A backup gives you a recovery option if an app becomes incompatible or the beta behaves unexpectedly. Do this before installing a beta, not only after a problem appears.

Allow a short settling period, but do not ignore persistent problems

Nothing’s beta guidance says: ‘Your phone may temporarily become warmer and consume more power after updating.’ It also says this should return to normal shortly after installation. Monitor the phone during that initial period rather than treating a brief change as proof that the update permanently damaged battery life.

If unusual warmth, rapid power loss, crashes or sluggish behavior continues beyond the short period described by Nothing, write down the model, build and affected apps. Check whether a newer beta build is offered, and use Nothing’s support channels with those details. Do not present the beta warning as a performance statistic: Nothing provides no general percentage for battery, speed or reliability improvements in the material describing OS 5.0.

What you should not change automatically

  • Do not revoke every permission. Remove access that is unnecessary, but keep permissions required by functions you intentionally use.
  • Do not assume a missing feature is an installation error. A phased rollout, device limitation or regional build can explain why another phone has an option yours lacks.
  • Do not treat beta behavior as stable-release behavior. The warmth and increased-power warning is tied to Nothing’s OS 5.0 Open Beta guidance.
  • Do not reset the phone merely because a menu moved. Search Settings, check the build number and consult the model-specific instructions first.

Model, region and support caveats

Nothing’s OS 5.0 page says rollout is phased by region and carrier where applicable, and that its timeline is indicative rather than fixed. It also lists device-specific availability. The following statement is time-sensitive and comes from that OS 5.0 page; verify current support status before relying on it for a later release.

Device group What Nothing’s OS 5.0 page states Practical implication
Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 They had reached the end of major software support and would not receive OS 5.0. Do not wait for an OS 5.0 menu on these models; confirm the current support policy and latest available security or maintenance build.
Other Nothing or CMF models Feature and release availability depends on the device, rollout phase, region and carrier where applicable. Use the installed model and build to determine whether a setting should exist before looking for a workaround.

When a setting or feature is missing after the update

The update screen says you are current, but another phone has a newer version

Compare model, region and carrier before comparing version numbers. Return to Settings > System > System Update/System updates and check again later. A phased release can make two apparently identical phones report different availability.

A permission menu has a different name

Use Settings search terms such as “privacy,” “permissions,” “camera,” “microphone” or “location.” Android and Nothing can rename or reorganize these controls between builds. Confirm the build before following a screenshot from another device.

A Glyph or Bluetooth control is absent

Check whether your handset supports the hardware or feature, then verify the rollout information for your region. For Bluetooth, use the standard Bluetooth settings while the Quick Settings layout is being located; for Glyph, look for the Glyph App only on a model that includes Glyph controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An app fails after the privacy review

Identify which permission the app needs for the specific function, then grant that permission back to the trusted app rather than restoring access globally. Test the function again and leave unrelated apps restricted.

A practical order for your next update

Use this sequence whenever a Nothing OS update finishes: identify the model and build; check the System Update screen once more; review camera, microphone and location access; inspect Private Space only if you need a separate authenticated area; then verify the Glyph App or Bluetooth Quick Settings if your phone and habits use them. If the installation was the OS 5.0 Open Beta, apply the backup and stability cautions separately. This order catches version and rollout differences before you spend time changing settings that your particular phone does not offer.
