Which Notes App Is Best for Sensitive Information?

Standard Notes and Notesnook are leading cross-platform options with default end-to-end encryption claims. Apple Notes can suit Apple users who lock sensitive notes and understand its recovery and attachment limits.

There is no single best notes app for every kind of sensitive information. For a cross-platform app with end-to-end encryption enabled by default, Standard Notes and Notesnook are the clearest candidates in the available product documentation. Apple Notes is a reasonable option for people in the Apple ecosystem if they explicitly lock sensitive notes and accept its attachment, sharing, and passphrase-recovery limits. These are conditional recommendations based on official documentation—not hands-on testing or a complete independent security audit comparison.

What makes a notes app suitable for sensitive information?

Start with your threat model: who might try to access the notes, and what access could they get? A cloud account compromise, a person holding your unlocked phone, and a lost encryption passphrase are different risks. The word “secure” alone does not tell you which of them an app addresses.

Pay particular attention to four distinctions:

  • End-to-end encryption: The app encrypts data on your device before it syncs, so the service is not supposed to receive the readable content. Check exactly what is covered: notes, attachments, titles, and metadata may have different treatment.
  • Encryption at rest: A provider may encrypt data stored on its servers, but that does not by itself mean the provider cannot access the content.
  • App lock or biometrics: A PIN or fingerprint prompt can deter someone using an already-unlocked device. It is not automatically additional encryption of the stored data.
  • Recovery: If only you hold the key or passphrase, losing it can mean losing access to older notes. A password reset may not restore encrypted content.

Also consider whether you need offline editing, desktop Linux, web access, cross-device sync, or Apple-specific integration. Those practical requirements can narrow the choice before you compare encryption designs.

How the main options compare

App Encryption and scope Device and platform details Important limits
Apple Notes secure notes End-to-end encryption applies to notes you explicitly lock with a device passcode or separate password. Apple documents AES-GCM encryption for the note and supported attachments, with a 16-byte key derived from the passphrase using PBKDF2 and SHA-256. Apple Platform Security Available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and iCloud web, according to Apple’s security guide. Only listed attachment types—images, sketches, tables, maps, and websites—can be encrypted in secure notes. Shared notes that are not passphrase-encrypted use CloudKit’s encrypted data type for content, but creation and modification dates are not encrypted. Resetting the passphrase does not unlock previously secured notes.
Standard Notes The company says notes, tags, and other app-generated data are encrypted using XChaCha20-Poly1305, with keys derived from the account password using Argon2. It says encryption and decryption happen offline on the device. Standard Notes security documentation Its documentation describes an optional local application passcode to protect account keys and the device database. Web app key handling depends on using that passcode. Without an application passcode, the web app stores account keys unencrypted in its app database, according to the company. Standard Notes says mobile biometrics are a local-access deterrent, not extra cryptographic protection. The company points to open-source code and third-party audits, but their scope and coverage of current client versions have not been independently assessed here.
Notesnook The company says end-to-end encryption is enabled by default, including before web notes sync from the browser. It also says notes remain readable and editable offline and sync when connectivity returns. Notesnook product documentation Listed platforms include Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and web. Setup options include app lock, an encrypted vault with a second password, and account two-factor authentication. The company’s documentation supports these product claims, but independent audit reports were not located and assessed. The App Store listing describes app lock and encrypted vault as Pro features; check current plan details for your region. Notesnook App Store listing

Which app fits your situation?

Choose Standard Notes for a dedicated cross-platform encrypted notes app

Standard Notes is a strong candidate if you want encryption to apply by default to app-generated data and value its published cryptographic design, open-source code, and stated third-party audits. Treat the audit references as a starting point rather than proof that every current app version or feature has been covered. For web use, follow the company’s recommendation to set an application passcode; without one, the web app’s database stores account keys unencrypted.

Notesnook is a strong fit if you need Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile, and web access alongside offline note editing and default end-to-end encryption as described by the company. Its separate-password vault may suit notes that need an additional access step, but an app lock or vault prompt should not be confused with a complete security guarantee. Choose Apple Notes secure notes for an Apple-centered workflow

Apple Notes can make sense if you already use Apple devices and want to secure particular notes rather than encrypt every note in a separate service. You must take the lock action for each sensitive note. Apple states that secure notes are end-to-end encrypted with a user-provided passphrase required to view them on supported devices and the iCloud website. Apple Platform Security

What to check before storing high-impact information

  • Verify what is encrypted. Determine whether the protection covers note content, attachments, titles, and metadata, and whether it is automatic or requires locking a note.
  • Plan for passphrase loss. Keep any required passphrase safe and separate from the account recovery process. For Apple secure notes, resetting the passphrase lets you create new secure notes but does not reveal old ones; those still require the original passphrase.
  • Protect the device and session. A person who can use an unlocked device or active browser session may be able to read notes. App locks and biometrics can add a local barrier, but they do not necessarily change the underlying encryption.
  • Understand sharing exposure. Check whether shared notes retain end-to-end encryption and what metadata remains visible. Apple says metadata such as creation and modification dates is not encrypted for shared notes that are not passphrase-encrypted.
  • Keep a recovery plan. Before moving important records, confirm how export and backup work, and make sure you can recover the encryption credentials needed to read any backup. Do not assume an account password reset restores encrypted notes.
  • Evaluate evidence by scope. Published design, open-source code, and audit reports are useful but answer different questions. Check an audit’s date, scope, and covered versions rather than treating the word “audited” as a universal assurance.

Is Standard Notes more secure than Notesnook?

The available official documentation does not establish that one is safer overall. Standard Notes describes its algorithms and says it has completed third-party audits; Notesnook describes default end-to-end encryption and broad platform and offline support. This evidence does not amount to a like-for-like review of audit scope, current app builds, recovery behavior, or every device-level risk, so choose based on your workflow and the evidence you can verify.
