The most useful Nintendo Switch 2 accessories depend on whether you play mainly on a TV, want extra screen protection, or travel with more than the console. Start with a Switch 2-sized screen protector, add a Pro Controller if you prefer a full-size pad, and choose a compact case or a larger bag according to what you carry. The console already includes one left and one right Joy-Con 2, so another controller is optional.
What are the most essential Nintendo Switch 2 accessories?
For many owners, the practical shortlist is a fitted screen protector and a case that matches the trip. A full-size controller is a comfort upgrade for TV play, not a requirement: the console comes with a pair of Joy-Con 2. Which controller makes sense for TV play?
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
The Pro Controller is the clearest optional upgrade if you prefer a full-size gamepad. Nintendo lists a C Button for GameChat, mappable GL and GR rear buttons, an audio jack, and HD rumble 2. Nintendo estimates about 40 hours of battery life and about three hours to charge; actual battery life varies with use. Its battery is internal, and Nintendo says replacement is a paid service. Independent recommendations are editorial judgments rather than product specifications: TechRadar names it its tailor-made Switch 2 controller option, while GamesRadar+ calls it the best controller and notes that it lacks Hall-effect sticks. Joy-Con 2 and the Charging Grip
The included Joy-Con 2 already provide motion controls, HD rumble 2, a mouse sensor, and access to GameChat through the C Button. Nintendo estimates about 20 hours of battery life and about three and a half hours to charge; actual life varies with use. Buy an additional pair when you need more players or a replacement, rather than assuming one is essential.

How should you choose a Switch 2 screen protector?
Buy a protector made specifically for Switch 2. Its larger screen and different body dimensions mean that a fitted protector for the new console is not interchangeable with one for the original Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite, according to Belkin’s compatibility information. Choose by the equipment you take with you. Nintendo’s compact case is for console-focused portability; the larger all-in-one case is designed to carry a TV-mode setup as well.

If you mainly want to protect and carry the console, the compact option avoids bringing the dock and other TV equipment. Its screen protector and cleaning cloth are bundled, but the console and other contents must be purchased separately.

Choose the all-in-one case when the dock is coming too
If your trip includes playing on another television, the all-in-one case is designed for the console, dock, controllers, cables, and up to six game cards. A third-party alternative TechRadar discusses is the Nacon Protection Case XL, which it presents as a larger option for carrying the handheld, dock, games, and cables on extended trips; that description is editorial guidance, not a manufacturer-stated capacity specification. Some original Switch accessories can connect, but physical fit and compatibility vary. Nintendo Australia’s compatibility table says original Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller may pair wirelessly with Switch 2; original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 body. - Original Joy-Con grips, charging grips, straps, wheels, and battery packs are listed as unusable with Joy-Con 2.
- Do not assume an older fitted case or screen protector will fit. Belkin says its Switch 2-specific fitted accessories will not fit earlier Switch models.
For storage, Nintendo says Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express. Standard microSD cards are not compatible for Switch 2 game storage; Nintendo’s compatibility table limits their use to viewing or importing screenshots and video from the original Switch.
