For a versatile standard zoom on a full-frame Nikon Z camera, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is the strongest all-round choice in TechRadar’s 2026 guide. Its constant f/2.8 aperture suits varied shooting, including weddings and events, but it is expensive, has no built-in lens stabilization, and may not offer enough improvement to justify an upgrade if you already own the original 24-70mm f/2.8. The right choice depends on your camera’s format and what you photograph.
How to choose a Nikon Z lens
Start with the camera format, then choose a focal range and aperture suited to your subjects. Nikon’s catalog distinguishes full-frame lenses from APS-C/DX models; check the exact lens and camera compatibility before buying. A wider maximum aperture, such as f/2.8, can be useful when light is limited, while a longer zoom range reduces how often you need to change lenses. Stabilization, weight, filter size, and weather sealing also affect day-to-day use.

Nikon’s Z mount gives designers room to create different optical layouts. TechRadar cameras editor Timothy Coleman explains: “The larger-diameter flange on Z-mount cameras and its closer proximity to the image sensor means there’s more freedom in lens design.”

TechRadar selects this lens as its best standard zoom for full-frame Nikon Z cameras. The 24–70mm range covers everyday wide-to-short-telephoto framing, while the constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is useful for weddings, events, and other situations where light or subject movement makes a faster shutter speed valuable. This is a reviewer recommendation, not a claim that one lens is best for every photographer.

| Specification | Source-reported detail |
|---|---|
| Format and range | Full-frame; 24–70mm zoom (TechRadar, 2026) |
| Maximum aperture | Constant f/2.8 (TechRadar, 2026) |
| Lens stabilization | No lens stabilizer listed by TechRadar (2026) |
| Weather sealing | Weather seals listed by TechRadar (2026) |
| Minimum focus distance | 0.24m, as listed by TechRadar (2026) |
| Filter size | 77mm, listed by TechRadar (2026) and Digital Camera World |
| Weight | 675g, listed by TechRadar (2026) and Digital Camera World |
| Dimensions | 84 × 142mm, as listed by TechRadar (2026) |
The trade-off is cost: TechRadar describes it as expensive. The same guide cautions that owners of the original 24-70mm f/2.8 may not see enough improvement to make replacement worthwhile. Digital Camera World independently reports the same weight and filter-thread size; these are published specifications, not independent measurements for this article.
Choose by what you photograph
Travel and general use: consider extra zoom reach
Nikon’s catalog includes the full-frame NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S. Its longer range can frame distant details without changing lenses as often; the 24-70mm f/2.8 S II instead offers a brighter maximum aperture. Choose between reach and low-light flexibility based on the scenes you shoot most.

Portraits: compare the 85mm primes
Nikon lists the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S and 85mm f/1.2 S. An 85mm prime is a category worth considering for portrait framing and shallow depth of field, but the reviewed material does not establish a universal winner between these two lenses. Consider the aperture you need and the lens’s practical cost and handling before deciding.

Nikon’s lineup includes the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR and 400mm, 600mm, and 800mm options. The right choice depends on the distance to your subjects, how much reach you need, and how much size, weight, and cost you can accommodate. The catalog listing alone does not establish one of these as the best wildlife lens for every photographer.

Landscapes, architecture, and interiors: compare wide zooms
Nikon lists the full-frame 14-24mm f/2.8 S and 14-30mm f/4 S. Compare their maximum apertures and the practical size that suits your work. A wider view can be useful for broad scenes or tight spaces, but the appropriate focal range depends on your composition and subject.

For DX cameras, check the format label
Nikon’s catalog includes DX lenses such as the 24mm f/1.7 and 12-28mm power zoom, along with other DX zoom options. Check that a candidate lens suits your exact camera and confirm how its field of view fits the framing you want. Do not assume a full-frame recommendation is automatically the best match for a DX body.

Where the 24-70mm f/2.8 fits in a larger kit
Nikon describes a professional f/2.8 zoom trio spanning 14mm to 200mm: the 14-24mm f/2.8 S, 24-70mm f/2.8 S II, and 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S. That lineup provides a broad range of focal lengths at f/2.8, but it is a system option rather than a requirement; many photographers will be better served by choosing one lens for their main subjects.
