The main Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden story has several prominent survivors of Akatsuki confrontations: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, Might Guy, Kurenai Yuhi, Sakura Haruno, Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka, Choji Akimichi and, with a crucial qualification, Gaara. Asuma Sarutobi survives his first encounter with the organization but later dies from wounds inflicted by Hidan. Jiraiya does not survive his battle with Pain, and Kisame Hoshigaki’s apparent defeat is only temporary before he chooses suicide.
This article covers major direct confrontations in the main manga and anime storyline. It distinguishes real Akatsuki members from jutsu-created clones, separates surviving an individual fight from remaining alive through the entire story, and treats revival as different from never having died.

What “survived an encounter” means here
Akatsuki is not one opponent in one battle. Its members operate in pairs, attack different villages, use clones and disguises, and sometimes fight the same character more than once. A useful answer therefore needs three tests.
- Direct confrontation: The character must be present in a major fight, pursuit or capture attempt involving an Akatsuki member or an opponent directly controlled by Akatsuki methods.
- Immediate result: The article records whether the character escaped, forced a retreat, was defeated, died, was revived or was captured.
- Long-term status: Surviving one encounter does not guarantee survival through the whole series. Asuma is the clearest example: he gets out of the early Leaf encounter, then dies in the Hidan and Kakuzu storyline.
That approach also prevents two common errors: treating Naruto’s fight with an Itachi copy as a victory over the real Itachi, and saying Gaara “never died” after Shukaku was removed.

The first Hidden Leaf encounter: Asuma, Kurenai, Kakashi and Guy get out alive
One of the earliest major Akatsuki encounters occurs when Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki enter the Hidden Leaf. Asuma Sarutobi and Kurenai Yuhi confront them, and Kakashi joins the fight. The Leaf team is outmatched, but the confrontation does not become a mass casualty event.
Guy’s arrival changes the tactical situation. The Akatsuki pair decide that continuing the fight is not worth the risk and withdraw. Asuma, Kurenai, Kakashi and Guy therefore survive that encounter. Their survival means they escaped that specific confrontation, not that none of them will later face lasting consequences from the Akatsuki.
Sasuke’s separate confrontation with Itachi
Sasuke is often included in lists of Akatsuki survivors because he lives through a direct clash with his brother. The result is not a Sasuke victory: Itachi defeats him, leaving him unconscious and injured. Jiraiya’s intervention helps prevent the encounter from becoming a death sentence for the Leaf side and prompts Itachi and Kisame to retreat.
The important distinction is that Sasuke survives despite losing the immediate fight. “Survived fighting Itachi” and “defeated Itachi” are different claims.

Kazekage Rescue: clones, Sasori, Deidara and Gaara’s death and revival
The Kazekage Rescue arc contains several Akatsuki confrontations, but not all of the opponents are the actual members whose identities they imitate. Naruto and Kakashi appear to fight Itachi, while Team Guy appears to fight Kisame. Both opponents are jutsu-created clones controlled by Akatsuki techniques. The encounters still count as Akatsuki-related battles, but they should not be described as Naruto defeating the real Itachi or Guy defeating the real Kisame.
Naruto and Kakashi
Naruto and Kakashi survive their encounter with the Itachi clone. The clone’s defeat lets the rescue party continue toward the captured Kazekage, but it gives no evidence that the real Itachi was beaten in that battle.
Guy’s team
Guy’s team also survives its confrontation with a Kisame clone. The clone distinction matters because a copied body can reproduce an opponent’s appearance and abilities without putting the original Akatsuki member in the same physical danger.

Sakura and Chiyo against Sasori
Sakura Haruno and the elder puppet master Chiyo fight Sasori, one of the organization’s most consequential battles in the rescue mission. Sakura survives the encounter. Chiyo also survives the fight itself, but later gives her life to restore Gaara, so she is not a character who remains alive after the rescue arc.

Gaara’s status
Gaara’s case requires the most careful wording. Akatsuki members kidnap him and extract Shukaku, the One-Tail sealed inside him. The extraction kills Gaara. He is then revived through Chiyo’s life-sacrifice technique.
Consequently, Gaara does survive the overall rescue storyline, but he does not survive continuously without dying. “Gaara survived the Akatsuki” is accurate only when it includes the fact that he died and was subsequently revived.
Hidan and Kakuzu: Asuma dies, Team 10 survives
The Hidan and Kakuzu arc produces a direct answer to the question “Which Naruto characters did Akatsuki kill?” Asuma is fatally wounded by Hidan’s curse technique. His students Shikamaru, Ino and Choji survive the encounter and later act on their grief.
Shikamaru’s survival is especially significant because he remains involved in the effort to stop Hidan. Ino and Choji also live through the battle and its aftermath. Their survival should not be confused with Asuma’s outcome: the three students escape, while their teacher does not.

This encounter also shows why a character list without an event-by-event explanation is misleading. Saying “Team 10 survived the Akatsuki” hides the fact that the same confrontation killed the team’s leader.

Jiraiya’s investigation and battle against Pain in Amegakure ends with Jiraiya’s death. He does not survive his encounter with the Akatsuki’s leader. His information about Pain’s bodies and abilities nevertheless reaches the Leaf and becomes essential to Naruto’s later response.
Naruto’s confrontation with Pain is different. Naruto survives the battle and ultimately reaches Nagato, the person controlling the Six Paths of Pain. The assault has already destroyed much of the Hidden Leaf and killed many people. Nagato then uses Rinne Rebirth, a resurrection technique, to restore those killed in the attack.
Thus Naruto is a survivor of the Pain encounter, while Jiraiya is not. The people restored by Nagato are also not examples of characters who simply avoided death; they died during the assault and returned because of a specific technique.
Kisame’s apparent defeat and final death
Kisame’s later storyline is another warning against treating a single scene as a final survival result. Naruto and the shinobi protecting him survive an attempt involving Kisame. The apparent defeated body, however, is a deception: Kisame has hidden inside Samehada.
His eventual fate is not survival. When capture would expose Akatsuki intelligence, Kisame summons sharks and allows them to kill him. He dies to protect information, so a list that marks him as a survivor merely because he escaped the first apparent defeat is incomplete.
Who counts as a survivor, and with what qualification?

Why the answer is not a complete named-character census
The series includes indirect meetings, anime-only material, revived fighters during the Fourth Shinobi World War and characters who encounter Akatsuki members without actually fighting them. Counting every one of those cases would require a separate rule for what qualifies as an encounter.
The names above are the central survivors of major direct confrontations in the main Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden narrative. They are not a claim that every named shinobi who ever appeared near an Akatsuki operation has been listed.
How to read survival claims in Naruto
When checking whether a character “survived the Akatsuki,” ask three questions: Was the opponent an actual member, a clone or a controlled body? Did the character survive the immediate battle, or was there a later death? And was a death reversed by revival? Applying those questions produces the accurate short answer:
- Naruto, Sasuke, Kakashi, Guy, Kurenai, Sakura, Shikamaru, Ino and Choji survive the major encounters described here.
- Gaara survives the storyline only after dying and being revived.
- Asuma survives one Akatsuki encounter but is later killed by Hidan.
- Jiraiya dies against Pain, and Kisame’s temporary escape ends with his suicide.
That distinction is why “survived an encounter” is more precise than simply asking which characters were never defeated or never died.
