For most systems, change settings in this order: choose the highest source quality your connection and playback path can use reliably, decide whether loudness normalization suits your listening, leave EQ flat until you identify a tonal problem, run your receiver’s microphone-based room correction, and then verify speaker size, crossover and subwoofer settings. There is no universally best combination. The right choices depend on whether you want source fidelity, steadier volume, a different tonal balance or compensation for your room.
Change one setting at a time and compare at approximately the same volume. A louder result often sounds “better” for a moment, so level matching is essential when judging any adjustment.

Start with this five-minute checklist
- Set source quality: In your streaming app, review both online-streaming and download-quality controls. Confirm what the active destination supports; a phone setting does not necessarily control a television, streamer, speaker or receiver.
- Choose normalization deliberately: Turn it on if playlists jump between quiet and loud recordings. Turn it off if you want to preserve the level differences chosen in the original releases.
- Use EQ as a correction, not a reflex: Begin with EQ off or flat. Make small changes only when you can describe the problem you are fixing.
- Run room correction: If your AV receiver includes a measurement microphone, follow that model’s calibration procedure from the main listening position.
- Check crossover and speaker settings: Treat the values measured by the receiver and the speaker manual as your starting point rather than applying a universal number.
1. Select source quality that your system can actually use
Higher streaming quality can preserve more of the source signal, but it also uses more bandwidth and storage. The audible result depends on the app, device, connection and every link in the playback route. “Lossless” is therefore an option to evaluate, not an automatic improvement for every listener or wireless connection.
Apple Music: lossless is a path-dependent choice
Apple’s support guidance provides separate controls for streaming and downloads. Review both if you listen offline as well as online. A lossless download can consume substantially more storage than a compressed file, while a wireless route or downstream device may not pass the difference through to the speakers. Check the destination currently selected instead of assuming the iPhone’s choice governs every connected product.

Spotify: online and download quality are separate
Spotify exposes independent quality settings for online playback and downloads. Its quality can adapt to help avoid stuttering, so a setting selected in the app is not the same thing as a guarantee that every song will arrive at that quality under changing network conditions. Review the active output route as well: Spotify says behavior can differ between the app, web player and third-party devices.
| Source-quality decision | Use it when | Trade-off or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Higher or lossless quality | You have sufficient data, storage and a playback chain that supports the format. | More bandwidth and storage; the difference may be inaudible or lost on a particular wireless or device route. |
| Adaptive or lower quality | You need reliable playback on a constrained connection or want smaller downloads. | Potentially less source detail, but fewer interruptions and lower data use. |
| Download-quality review | You listen offline or have limited mobile data. | Changing streaming quality alone does not change files already downloaded. |
Do not use source-quality changes to solve a room boom, harsh treble or inconsistent track volume. Those are normally addressed by normalization, EQ, placement or room correction.
2. Decide whether loudness normalization belongs in your listening
Loudness normalization changes playback level so consecutive tracks feel more consistent. It does not remaster the files or remove the intentional contrast between sections of an album. It is particularly useful for mixed playlists containing older, quieter recordings beside modern, heavily limited masters.

Spotify’s documented levels
Spotify describes its purpose this way: “We use loudness normalization to balance soft and loud songs for a more consistent listening experience.” Its stated normal target is -14 dB LUFS. Premium listeners are offered three documented playback levels:
| Spotify level | Stated target | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Loud | -11 dB LUFS | Listeners who need a higher average playback level, while accepting less headroom in some material. |
| Normal | -14 dB LUFS | The service’s standard normalization choice. |
| Quiet | -19 dB LUFS | Lower average level when you want more margin for loud environments or sensitive listening. |
Those figures are Spotify’s service-specific targets, not universal industry standards. Spotify also states that normalization is not used by its web player and by third-party devices such as some televisions and speakers. If the result changes when you switch from the phone app to another endpoint, that route difference may be the explanation.
Apple’s equivalent control
Apple’s iPhone Music guide calls its feature Sound Check and describes it as normalizing the volume level of audio. It is analogous to Spotify normalization in purpose, but the documentation does not establish that the two services use identical measurements or processing.

Choose by listening goal
- Turn normalization on for radio-style listening, parties and playlists assembled from many albums where reaching for the volume control is annoying.
- Turn it off for an album listened to in sequence, or when preserving the producer’s track-to-track level relationships matters more than consistency.
- Test the actual route: compare the same songs in the app and on the connected device you normally use, because support can differ by endpoint.
3. Keep EQ neutral until you can name the problem
EQ changes tonal balance; it does not make every recording more faithful. A flat or bypassed setting is the most useful baseline because it lets you identify what your headphones, speakers and room are doing before adding a preference curve. There is no fixed “best” EQ curve for all listeners.

Apple’s iPhone Music controls include EQ choices. Spotify documents that EQ availability is platform-specific: on Android, support depends on the device manufacturer, and desktop listeners may need to use the EQ built into their speakers or receiver. If the app has no EQ, look at the active playback hardware rather than installing multiple processors that may stack unpredictably.
A controlled way to adjust EQ
- Disable EQ or select the flat preset.
- Play a familiar recording containing vocals, bass and cymbals at a comfortable, unchanged volume.
- Describe the issue in plain terms: for example, “bass masks the kick drum” or “voices sound sharp,” rather than starting with a preset name.
- Change one band or one small group of bands at a time. Prefer a modest cut before a large boost when both could address the same problem.
- Return to flat and compare again at the same loudness. Keep the change only if it remains preferable after several tracks.
Do not use EQ to compensate for a disconnected speaker, an incorrect input, a damaged driver or a bad room-correction measurement. Fix those physical or setup issues first.

4. Run receiver room correction from the correct microphone position
Automatic room correction measures how your speakers interact with the room and then applies delays, levels, crossover choices or EQ. It can be more repeatable than guessing from the sofa, but the procedure and menu names are model-specific. Use the supplied microphone and the manual for your exact receiver.
Yamaha RX300A example
The Yamaha RX300A documentation says its room-correction measurement can determine speaker connection, distance, level, frequency and phase relative to the measurement position. Its Auto EQ applies the values obtained by Room Correction, while separate manual EQ and speaker-level controls remain available. The manual lists 80 Hz as that model’s default crossover. That number is a documented RX300A default, not a rule for every speaker or room.
Denon AVC-X8500H example
For the AVC-X8500H, Denon instructs you to place the microphone at the main listening position, with its tip toward the ceiling and at seated ear height. The receiver’s Dynamic EQ is described as adjusting frequency response with room and hearing characteristics in mind when listening at lower volume. Denon also advises rerunning Audyssey if speaker connections or subwoofer volume change after setup.

Onkyo TX-NR7100 example
Onkyo’s TX-NR7100 setup article describes its microphone-based AccuEQ process as measuring levels, crossover frequencies and distance, then adjusting EQ for the acoustic environment. Dolby’s Atmos setup guidance likewise notes that room calibration can optimize an Atmos installation.
Reliable calibration procedure
- Connect every speaker and subwoofer exactly as the receiver manual shows.
- Put the supplied microphone at the primary listening position, at seated ear height, using the orientation specified for your model.
- Keep people, pets and loose objects away from the measurement area and remain quiet while tones play.
- Run the complete automatic routine rather than stopping after the first measurement if the receiver requests multiple positions.
- Save the result, then listen before changing manual EQ or levels.
- If you move speakers, change wiring or alter subwoofer volume, rerun the calibration when the model’s instructions call for it.
5. Treat crossover and subwoofer values as system-specific
The crossover determines where low-frequency work moves between speakers and the subwoofer. A value that is suitable for a compact satellite system may be wrong for large full-range speakers, a room with strong bass modes or a subwoofer placed far from the listening position.
Use the receiver’s measured value and the speaker manufacturer’s guidance as your starting point. Onkyo documents automatic crossover selection during AccuEQ setup. Yamaha’s RX300A lists 80 Hz as its default, but that is only a concrete example from one model.

Quick Recap
- After automatic setup, verify speaker size and crossover: A receiver may classify speakers differently from your expectation.
- Listen for a gap: Weak upper-bass can indicate a crossover or phase relationship that needs checking.
- Listen for excess boom: Room modes, subwoofer placement or level may be the cause; raising the crossover is not automatically the fix.
- Do not change several bass controls at once: Adjust crossover, subwoofer level and phase separately so you know which change helped.
A practical tuning sequence for an existing system
- Stabilize the route. Select the input and speakers you actually use. Confirm that the receiver, headphones or wireless device is receiving the intended source.
- Set quality. Choose streaming and download quality appropriate to your data plan, storage and connection reliability. Play a familiar track and check for dropouts.
- Choose normalization. Use a varied playlist to decide whether level consistency helps. Test on the real endpoint, not only inside the phone app.
- Return EQ to flat. Save your current preset first if the system allows it, then evaluate the unprocessed sound.
- Calibrate the room. Follow the receiver’s microphone placement and measurement sequence. Save the automatic result.
- Inspect crossover and levels. Compare the measured values with the speaker manual and correct obvious wiring or size errors.
- Personalize one control. Make a small EQ, level or Dynamic EQ change only when you can state the listening goal.
- Recheck at matched volume. Keep the change only if it sounds better across more than one recording and at more than one listening level.
Common symptoms and the setting to investigate
| Symptom | First check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tracks jump dramatically in volume | Normalization or Sound Check | These controls address playback-level consistency; source quality will not. |
| Music stutters on mobile data | Streaming-quality setting and network conditions | Adaptive or lower quality can improve continuity. |
| Voices sound too sharp or dull | EQ flat baseline, then a small tonal adjustment | There is no universal curve, so the correction must match your system and preference. |
| Bass is boomy after moving speakers | Room correction, subwoofer level, placement and crossover | Room interaction and calibration values change when the layout changes. |
| Surround or Atmos speakers seem unbalanced | Receiver calibration and microphone position | Distance and level errors can make a correct speaker layout sound wrong. |
| The app’s setting seems ineffective on a TV or speaker | Whether that endpoint supports the feature | Some services do not apply normalization or EQ on every route. |
Settings to choose by your actual goal
| Your priority | Starting choice | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum source fidelity | Highest supported quality, flat EQ, normalization off if you want original level differences | Bandwidth, storage and whether the playback path preserves the format. |
| Consistent playlist volume | Normalization or Sound Check on | Service and endpoint support; Spotify’s documented targets are service-specific. |
| Personal tonal preference | Flat EQ first, then small, single changes | Match volume before judging and avoid stacking app and hardware EQ. |
| More even sound around the room | Receiver room correction with the supplied microphone | Model-specific microphone placement and rerun requirements after changes. |
Important limits to keep in mind
- Menus, supported formats and feature availability can change with app, firmware and device updates.
- Manufacturer documentation describes how a particular service or receiver behaves; it does not prove that every listener will hear the same improvement.
- A documented target such as Spotify’s -14 dB LUFS or Yamaha’s 80 Hz default should not be treated as a universal standard.
- Do not buy a replacement calibration microphone until you check the receiver’s manual and box. Many receivers include one, and microphones are not interchangeable across models.
- If a change makes the system louder, compare again at matched loudness before deciding it sounds better.
