Which Movement Settings Should You Change First in a New Game?

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Before you learn a new game’s controls, inspect camera shake, sway or bob, motion blur, automatic camera movement and field of view. These options have the biggest effect on visual comfort and on how clearly you can read a scene. Next, adjust look sensitivity in small steps, then choose hold or toggle behavior for sprint, crouch and other repeated actions.

There is no universal “best” preset. Menus, defaults and available controls differ by game, platform and input device. Treat “first” as an inspection order: change one option, play normally for a few minutes, and keep the change only if it improves comfort or control.

1. Check camera motion and screen effects

Camera movement is the best first stop because it can make a game uncomfortable before sensitivity or button layout becomes an issue. Look in Accessibility, Camera, Video and Gameplay; developers place these controls in different sections.

Camera shake

Turn camera shake down or off if explosions, melee hits, sprinting or vehicle movement make the screen jump. A shake option may cover only one effect, so test several situations rather than assuming the whole camera is now stable. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 treats adjustable camera movement and screen-motion effects as important for players susceptible to motion sickness, distracted by moving content or needing more time to read.

Sway, bob and head movement

Walking and sprinting can add a rhythmic sway or head-bob effect. Reduce it when the horizon appears to move even though your character is traveling in a straight line. Some games expose separate sliders for walking sway, sprint bob and weapon movement; others combine them under a motion-reduction option.

Motion blur

Motion blur softens the image while you turn or move. Disable it when fast camera movement makes text, enemies or environmental details hard to see. If the game offers a strength slider, start low rather than changing several visual effects at once. Blur can be a visual-style choice, but it is not required for basic control.

Forced and automatic camera movement

Check for camera follow, cinematic camera motion, automatic rotation, vehicle camera steering and other behaviors that move the view without a right-stick or mouse input. A player-controlled camera should be reducible or disableable where the game allows it. Microsoft’s accessibility feature guidance specifically recommends checking whether screen shake and other visual effects can be disabled and whether camera motion can be reduced across all game modes.

Field of view

Field of view (FOV) determines how much of the scene appears horizontally. A wider view can make nearby movement feel less cramped and reveal more peripheral action; a narrower view can make distant targets appear larger. Change it only after checking motion effects, because FOV changes can alter the perceived speed of movement and may require a new sensitivity adjustment. Do not copy a numerical FOV value from another game: camera projection, display aspect ratio and game genre all matter.

Where these options appear in real games

Official feature lists show how much the menu structure can vary. God of War Ragnarök includes camera sway, camera shake, cinematic smoothing, motion blur and camera-rotation speed controls. The Last of Us Part I lists camera shake, motion blur, camera follow distance and FOV adjustments. Those examples are illustrations of available controls, not a universal configuration for every title.

2. Adjust look and aim sensitivity

Once the image is comfortable, tune how quickly the camera responds to your mouse, stick or other pointing input. Make small changes and test ordinary traversal, a 180-degree turn and precise aiming. Large jumps make it difficult to tell whether a setting solved the problem or merely created a new one.

Separate look and aim controls

Many games separate general look sensitivity from aiming-down-sights, scoped or vehicle sensitivity. Set the general look speed first, then adjust aim or scope speed independently. A player who can turn comfortably may still find a high scoped speed too twitchy, while lowering the main value can make exploration feel sluggish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a repeatable test

  1. Stand in a safe area and turn from one fixed landmark to another.
  2. Walk a short route while making small left-and-right corrections.
  3. Face a nearby target, aim, and track it while it moves.
  4. Repeat after one small sensitivity change and keep notes if you are comparing several values.

There is no supported universal number for sensitivity. Microsoft guidance addresses sensitivity as a customizable camera setting, and accessibility spotlights from Ubisoft show camera-sensitivity controls as one part of a larger configuration. Your display, frame rate, controller stick range, mouse settings and personal precision all affect the result.

Look for acceleration and dead-zone options

If available, inspect stick or mouse acceleration, response curves and controller dead zones after the basic sensitivity. A large dead zone can make the first part of a stick movement feel unresponsive; a very small one can reveal drift. Change one of these advanced options at a time and test slow tracking as well as quick turns. A sensitivity slider cannot correct a physical stick that constantly moves on its own.

3. Choose hold, toggle and automatic movement behavior

Movement actions often require repeated presses or a button held for a long time. The comfortable choice depends on the game’s mechanics and on how much sustained pressure your hands can tolerate.

Sprint

Check whether sprint is set to hold, toggle or an automatic mode. Hold gives immediate cancellation when you release the button, while toggle reduces continuous finger pressure. Automatic sprint can remove repeated presses but may be awkward when stealth, precise positioning or stamina management is important. Test sprinting, stopping at a ledge and changing direction before committing to a mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crouch and other stance controls

A crouch toggle can be useful when a game expects long periods of stealth or low movement. A hold action may be safer when accidentally remaining crouched could expose you or slow an escape. Some games provide separate choices for crouch, prone and slide; evaluate each action in the situations where it matters rather than applying one rule to all of them.

Auto-move and repeated presses

Auto-move can help during long travel sections, but it may send your character forward while you are reading a menu, listening to dialogue or approaching a hazard. Accessibility options may also convert a hold into a toggle or replace repeated presses with a single press. Ubisoft’s accessibility spotlights for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope and Far Cry 6 describe these kinds of input alternatives, including sprint and repeated-action adjustments. Availability varies by game.

Remapping and alternate input paths

If the default movement button is difficult to reach, look for full remapping, alternate control schemes or dedicated accessibility presets. Confirm that the new binding does not create a conflict with jump, interact, dodge or menu navigation. After remapping, test every movement action in a low-risk area; a duplicate binding can be easy to miss until a timed encounter.

4. Use a motion or motor preset carefully

A preset can expose several relevant controls quickly. In a new game, select a motion-reduction or motor-accessibility preset if one is offered, then inspect the individual settings it changed. Presets differ in scope: one may disable shake and blur, while another may also alter sprint behavior, aiming or repeated inputs.

Do not assume a preset is a finished personal configuration. Check FOV, camera follow distance, sensitivity, aim speed, sprint style and button assignments afterward. Record the changes you want to keep so that you can recreate them on another profile or platform.

5. A practical first-session setup sequence

Use this order when starting a game with unfamiliar menus. It minimizes the chance that one change masks the effect of another.

  1. Open every relevant settings category. Scan Accessibility, Camera, Video and Gameplay before launching into a long mission.
  2. Reduce uncomfortable camera effects. Check shake, sway or bob, blur, cinematic smoothing and automatic camera behavior. Disable or lower only the effects that cause a problem.
  3. Set a workable FOV. Pick a view that keeps nearby movement readable without making the image feel unnaturally wide, then leave it while you tune sensitivity.
  4. Set general look sensitivity. Use a safe area for slow tracking and a quick turn. Make one small adjustment at a time.
  5. Tune aim or scope sensitivity. If the game separates it, test a moving target rather than relying on the feel of free-look.
  6. Choose sprint and stance behavior. Compare hold and toggle in ordinary travel, combat and stealth. Enable auto-move only if its risks fit the game.
  7. Review remaps and conflicts. Verify jump, crouch, dodge, interact and menu controls after any binding change.
  8. Play a normal section. A tutorial or quiet exploration segment reveals comfort problems better than a settings screen.
  9. Change one variable next. Keep a simple note of what changed and whether it helped, then revert changes that create new problems.

6. Diagnose common problems

“The screen still feels unstable after I disabled shake.”

Look for separate sway, bob, blur, camera rotation, cinematic smoothing and automatic-follow settings. A shake toggle may not affect every source of movement. Check cutscene and vehicle options as well as regular gameplay; some games apply different controls in different modes.

“Turning feels too slow, but aiming is already difficult.”

Keep the aim or scope value where precision is comfortable and raise only general look sensitivity slightly. If acceleration or a response curve is available, test that separately. Do not compensate for a drifting stick by continually increasing sensitivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A wider FOV made movement feel too fast.”

FOV changes the amount of world visible and can change perceived speed. Lower it in small steps, or keep the wider view and reduce general look sensitivity. Recheck aim sensitivity afterward if the game links the two settings.

“Toggle sprint causes accidental movement.”

Return to hold sprint or disable auto-sprint if you need immediate stopping. If the game supports a separate sprint-cancel rule, test it near ledges, stealth sections and stamina limits before using the toggle in a long mission.

“The preset changed more than I wanted.”

Open each affected option and restore the controls that do not suit you. Presets are starting points, not guarantees that every player will prefer the same FOV, sensitivity or input behavior.

7. What to check when comparing two games

If you are choosing between games or moving from one title to another, compare capabilities rather than copying values. The useful questions are whether each game lets you:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature Questions to ask Why it matters
Shake and motion effects Can shake, sway, bob and blur be disabled or reduced independently? One switch may not remove every source of visual movement.
Sensitivity Are look, aim, scope and vehicle sensitivities separate? Independent controls let you turn quickly without sacrificing precision.
FOV and follow distance Can FOV or camera distance be adjusted in the relevant modes? Viewable space and perceived movement vary by camera design.
Automatic camera behavior Can camera follow, rotation or cinematic movement be reduced? Player-controlled motion is easier to stabilize when automatic movement is limited.
Movement input Are sprint, crouch and repeated actions available as hold, toggle or single-press alternatives? Different options change hand effort and the risk of accidental movement.
Remapping Can movement controls be reassigned without conflicts? Binding flexibility matters when the default layout is uncomfortable or inaccessible.

Microsoft’s guidance and accessibility feature tags frame these as usability capabilities, not as a ranking of particular games. A title with more sliders is not automatically better; what matters is whether its controls address your specific discomfort or control problem.

8. Platform and update caveats

The same game can expose different options on console, PC and cloud versions, and updates can move a setting or add a new one. Menu names such as “camera rotation speed,” “motion effects” and “cinematic smoothing” are not standardized. If you are following a guide for a named game, verify its current build and platform before relying on an exact menu path or value.

Controller, mouse and display differences also matter. A setting that feels responsive with a high-refresh monitor may feel different on a television, and a controller’s stick range can change the result. Save a profile when the game supports it, especially before experimenting with presets or remaps.

9. A compact checklist before you begin

  • Camera shake: reduce or disable if impacts make the view jump.
  • Sway or bob: lower if walking motion causes discomfort.
  • Motion blur: lower or disable if text and targets smear while turning.
  • Automatic camera: reduce follow, rotation or cinematic movement where possible.
  • FOV: choose a comfortable view before final sensitivity tuning.
  • Look sensitivity: change in small steps and test normal traversal.
  • Aim or scope sensitivity: tune separately when the game allows it.
  • Sprint and crouch: choose hold, toggle or automatic behavior according to the game’s demands.
  • Remapping: verify every movement and interaction action after rebinding.
  • Testing: play a normal section and change only one setting at a time.
