Which Mosquito Repellents Work Best? How to Choose Safely

There is no single mosquito repellent that wins in every situation. The most reliable choice is an EPA-registered product whose label gives enough protection time for your outing, with an active ingredient and age directions you can follow. In the United States, CDC lists DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), and 2-undecanone as effective options when used as directed. Heat, sweat, water, rubbing, mosquito species, formulation, and concentration all change how long protection lasts.

Use the decision process below: verify EPA registration, estimate the exposure time, compare the label’s active ingredient and protection duration, check age restrictions, and add clothing or netting when conditions call for more than skin repellent.

What “best” means for mosquito repellent

A repellent is “best” only in relation to a particular person and outing. A short dog walk, an evening at a humid campsite, and travel in a mosquito-borne-disease area impose different demands. CDC guidance does not establish one universal winner or a head-to-head ranking of commercial products. Instead, it recommends proven EPA-registered repellents and following each product’s label.

EPA registration means the manufacturer submitted technical information about effectiveness for regulatory review. You can search registered products by active ingredient and claimed protection time with the EPA’s product-search tool, linked from CDC’s mosquito-bite prevention guidance. Registration is the first filter; the label is the final authority for application, reapplication, age limits, and fabrics.

A practical definition of “works best”

  • Verified: The container has an EPA registration number (in the U.S.) and a named active ingredient.
  • Long enough: The label’s protection period covers the planned exposure, with realistic allowance for sweat, rain, swimming, and rubbing.
  • Suitable: The formulation and age directions fit the user, skin, clothing, and activity.
  • Available as a layer: Clothing, treated gear, and netting can fill gaps that topical repellent cannot.

Active ingredients compared

CDC lists six active-ingredient groups in EPA-registered products. The table describes what the cited CDC guidance supports; it does not rank them by a universal performance score.

Active ingredient What CDC guidance establishes Important qualifications
DEET EPA-registered option with long-standing use. CDC Yellow Book says efficacy tends to peak at about 50% concentration; concentrations above that do not markedly increase protection time against mosquitoes. Duration still depends on the specific product and conditions.
Picaridin EPA-registered option; called KBR 3023 or icaridin outside the United States. Choose by the label’s stated protection time and directions rather than the ingredient name alone.
IR3535 EPA-registered option that typically provides reasonably long-lasting protection. Follow the individual product label for concentration, application sites, and reapplication.
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) and PMD Formulated, EPA-registered products are listed options. Do not substitute pure lemon-eucalyptus essential oil. CDC advises against it because validated safety/efficacy testing and EPA registration are absent. CDC’s general prevention page says not to use OLE/PMD products on children under three; a narrow Yellow Book note allows some sole-active OLE products at 30% or less below age three only when their label permits.
2-undecanone EPA-registered option; listed products typically provide reasonably long-lasting protection. Use the registered product’s label to determine duration and age limits.

The principal sources are CDC’s Preventing Mosquito Bites page (updated August 28, 2024) and the CDC Yellow Book chapter on mosquitoes, ticks, and other arthropods.

How concentration and protection time really work

More active ingredient generally extends protection, but it does not create a simple “higher percentage equals proportionally better” rule. CDC Yellow Book says products with less than 10% active ingredient might offer only limited protection, often about one to two hours. That is a general observation, not a guarantee for every formulation or species.

For DEET specifically, CDC reports that efficacy tends to peak near 50%; concentrations above 50% do not markedly increase protection time against mosquitoes. A very high percentage therefore should not be treated as an automatic upgrade. Compare the label’s tested protection-time claim, not just the largest number on the front of the package.

Match the label to your outing

  1. Estimate exposure: Count travel time, setup, activity, and the trip home—not just the time you expect to sit still.
  2. Check the label’s duration: Select a product whose stated protection period covers that window.
  3. Adjust for conditions: Heat, strenuous activity, perspiration, water, and clothing friction can shorten or alter real-world duration.
  4. Follow reapplication limits: Reapply only as the label directs. More frequent application is not automatically safer or more effective.

Choosing by situation

Short, low-sweat errands

A registered product with a label duration longer than the errand is usually sufficient. Apply only to exposed skin, keep it out from under clothing, and wash treated skin after returning indoors.

Hot, humid hikes or sports

Expect perspiration and rubbing to reduce the label’s practical window. Choose a product with a duration margin, carry it for label-directed reapplication, and cover more skin with lightweight long sleeves and trousers. Add permethrin-treated clothing or gear when appropriate; permethrin belongs on fabric, never on skin.

Swimming, rain, or frequent water exposure

Water can remove or change a product’s protection. Read the label for water-related directions and reapplication. Do not infer water resistance from a spray or lotion’s texture. Clothing, a hat, and netting provide protection that water cannot wash from skin because they do not rely on a topical film.

Camping and sleeping outdoors

Use topical repellent on exposed skin when appropriate, then layer physical protection. CDC recommends permethrin-treated clothing, nets, and outdoor gear according to their product instructions. For exposed sleeping areas, a bed net is an important additional barrier; CDC travel guidance discusses netting for outdoor-exposed sleeping spaces at its Philippines traveler page.

Travel in areas with mosquito-borne disease

Use an EPA-registered repellent consistently, even when mosquitoes seem scarce, and combine it with long clothing and screened or netted sleeping areas. Product registrations and permitted ingredients vary by country, so check the destination regulator and the local label rather than assuming a U.S. package is authorized everywhere.

Safety rules for adults

Read the entire label before first use. CDC considers EPA-registered repellents safe and effective when used as directed, but misuse can cause irritation or other problems.

  • Apply only to exposed skin and never under clothing.
  • For a face application, spray or dispense onto your hands first, then spread a thin covering on the face. Never spray directly into the face.
  • Avoid eyes, mouth, cuts, irritated skin, and the hands of young children.
  • Use only enough to cover exposed skin lightly; more product does not necessarily provide more protection.
  • After coming indoors, wash treated skin with soap and water. Wash treated clothing according to its label.
  • If a rash or irritation develops, wash the product off and stop using it. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or persist.

Children, pregnancy, and breastfeeding

Babies younger than two months

Do not apply mosquito repellent to infants younger than two months. CDC’s prevention guidance recommends covering arms and legs with clothing and using mosquito netting over a stroller or carrier. Ensure the net is secured and cannot fall against the baby’s face.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Children two months and older

Use only products whose labels permit the child’s age. An adult should put repellent on their own hands before applying it to a child’s face. Keep repellent away from the child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, and irritated skin. Children should not handle the container or apply the product themselves.

Children under three and OLE/PMD

CDC’s general prevention page says not to use OLE or PMD products on children under three. The Yellow Book describes a narrow exception for certain products containing OLE as the sole active ingredient at concentrations of 30% or less when the product label allows use below age three. Caregivers should follow the specific label and, when uncertain, choose another registered option or ask a pediatric clinician.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

CDC states that EPA-registered repellents are safe and effective during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed. The agency’s travel guidance also says repellent use is safe during pregnancy and suggests consulting a doctor with questions. Apply according to the label and use clothing and netting as additional layers.

Correct application: a step-by-step routine

  1. Read the label: Confirm the active ingredient, age minimum, protected body areas, maximum applications, and reapplication interval.
  2. Prepare skin: Apply sunscreen first and allow it to settle; apply repellent second. Do not apply to skin covered by clothing.
  3. Apply sparingly: Spread a thin, even layer over exposed skin. Avoid eyes, lips, nostrils, wounds, and irritated areas.
  4. Protect a child’s face safely: Put the product on your hands, then smooth it onto the child’s face while avoiding the eyes and mouth.
  5. Use sprays safely: Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and never spray near food. For the face, spray hands first.
  6. Reapply only when allowed: Sweat, water, and rubbing may reduce protection, but the label controls when and how much you may reapply.
  7. Remove it afterward: Wash treated skin with soap and water when you return indoors.

Layering topical repellent with clothing and netting

Permethrin-treated clothing and gear

Permethrin can be used on clothing, mosquito nets, and outdoor gear as directed. CDC says treated clothing remains protective after multiple washings, but the expected service life and retreatment interval depend on the product information. Never apply permethrin products directly to skin; CDC states that it belongs only on clothing, nets, or other fabrics as directed on the label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long sleeves and trousers

Closely woven, loose-fitting clothing reduces exposed skin and lowers the amount of repellent needed. Tuck trousers into socks when mosquitoes are abundant around the ankles, and close gaps at wrists and neck where practical.

Stroller, carrier, and bed netting

Netting is especially important for infants who cannot use repellent. It also protects adults and children during sleep in screened or outdoor-exposed areas. Inspect the net for tears, secure its edges, and keep fabric away from a baby’s face.

Do “natural” mosquito repellents work?

“Natural” describes an origin, not proven performance. CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents is unknown. That means an unregistered essential-oil blend, homemade mixture, wristband, or gadget should not be treated as an evidence-equivalent substitute for a registered repellent.

Pure oil of lemon eucalyptus essential oil is a specific safety issue: it is not the same as a formulated, EPA-registered OLE repellent. CDC advises against using the pure essential oil as a mosquito repellent because it lacks validated safety and efficacy testing and EPA registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Yellow Book also identifies repellent-impregnated wristbands and sound-emitting devices as ineffective. Garlic, vitamin supplements, and similar ingestion-based claims are not established by the cited CDC guidance. If bite prevention matters, use a registered topical product and physical barriers instead of relying on an unverified “natural” claim.

Common mistakes and fixes

Mistake Why it fails Better approach
Choosing by ingredient name alone Duration varies by concentration, formulation, mosquito species, and conditions. Compare the label’s protection time and application directions.
Assuming the highest percentage is always best Higher concentration generally lasts longer, but DEET protection does not markedly increase above about 50%. Select enough duration for the outing and follow the label.
Applying repellent under clothing It adds unnecessary skin exposure and does not protect covered areas. Apply only to exposed skin; cover the rest with clothing.
Spraying a child’s face directly It increases the chance of inhalation or eye and mouth exposure. Adults apply product to their own hands first, then to the child’s face.
Using adult repellent on a young infant Babies under two months should not receive topical repellent. Use clothing and stroller/carrier netting.
Putting permethrin on skin Permethrin is for fabric and gear, not direct skin application. Treat or buy treated clothing and follow its instructions.
Trusting an unregistered “natural” product CDC says effectiveness is unknown for non-EPA-registered repellents. Look for EPA registration and use the label.

A five-minute buying checklist

  1. Find the EPA registration number on the package.
  2. Record the active ingredient and concentration.
  3. Check the label’s stated protection time.
  4. Match the age minimum to every intended user.
  5. Consider heat, sweat, rain, swimming, and friction.
  6. Decide whether clothing treatment or netting is needed.
  7. Buy enough for the whole trip, including any label-permitted reapplication.
  8. Read storage, first-aid, and disposal instructions before opening the product.

What to do if bites continue

First check application rather than immediately changing ingredients. Confirm that all exposed areas were covered, that sweat or water did not remove the product, and that you observed the label’s reapplication interval. Inspect clothing and netting for gaps or tears. If protection repeatedly fails despite correct use, switch to a registered product with a longer label duration and add physical barriers. Different mosquito species and local conditions can produce different results, so no product can promise zero bites.

Bottom line for selecting a repellent

Start with EPA registration, then choose by label protection time, age suitability, and the conditions you expect. DEET, picaridin, IR3535, formulated OLE/PMD, and 2-undecanone are all CDC-listed options; the evidence does not justify declaring one the universal best. Use sunscreen before repellent, keep products off infants under two months and off children’s hands, reserve permethrin for fabric, and combine repellent with clothing and netting whenever exposure is prolonged or intense.
