Which Mosquito Repellent Works Best: DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus?

There is no single universal winner. The most reliable choice is an EPA-registered mosquito repellent whose active ingredient, labeled protection time, application directions, and age instructions fit your situation. CDC lists DEET, picaridin, and formulated oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD) products as options. A bottle of pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil is not equivalent to a registered OLE/PMD repellent.

What “works best” actually means

“Best” can mean the longest labeled protection, the easiest product to apply, the option that suits a child, or the formula you are most likely to use correctly. The CDC guidance available for this comparison does not establish a universal ranking of DEET, picaridin, and OLE/PMD, and it does not provide one directly comparable number of protection hours for all three ingredients.

That matters because an ingredient name alone does not describe the complete product. Formulation, concentration, delivery format, label directions, and intended users all affect how a specific repellent should be used. Two products containing the same active ingredient can carry different instructions or labeled protection times.

The practical answer is therefore a selection process rather than a winner:

  1. Start with an EPA-registered product.
  2. Check the active ingredient and the protection time printed on that product’s label.
  3. Confirm that the label permits use for the person’s age and intended application area.
  4. Follow the directions exactly, including reapplication instructions and precautions.

CDC says its EPA search tool can be filtered by active ingredient and protection time. Use that information to compare actual products instead of assuming that DEET always lasts longer, that picaridin is automatically better, or that every lemon-eucalyptus product has been tested.

How DEET, picaridin, and OLE/PMD compare

Option What CDC guidance supports How to compare products Important qualification
DEET DEET is one of the active ingredients CDC lists in EPA-registered repellents used to help prevent mosquito bites. Read the individual product’s labeled protection time, application directions, and age instructions. Do not assign a standard duration to every DEET product; the label for the specific formulation controls.
Picaridin CDC lists picaridin as an option. Outside the United States it is also known as KBR 3023 or icaridin. Compare a registered product’s label rather than relying on the ingredient name alone. There is no single CDC-backed duration that applies to all picaridin products.
Formulated OLE/PMD CDC lists registered or formulated oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products as options. Verify that the product is an EPA-registered repellent and follow its label. Do not use OLE/PMD products on children younger than 3 years.

In this context, OLE means a formulated repellent active, and PMD is a related name used on some products. Neither term should be treated as permission to substitute an untested essential oil. The CDC Yellow Book explains that pure, unformulated lemon eucalyptus essential oil has not had validated safety and efficacy testing as an insect repellent and is not registered as one.

Why EPA registration is the most useful first filter

CDC recommends EPA-registered insect repellents to help prevent mosquito bites. Registration gives you a practical, verifiable way to identify a product that has an approved label with directions and precautions. It also lets you compare products by the details that matter at the point of use: active ingredient, labeled protection time, application method, and age suitability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CDC says it does not know the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some products marketed as natural. “Plant-based” is a marketing description, not proof that a product prevents bites. A registered OLE/PMD formula and a bottle of essential oil may both contain words related to lemon eucalyptus, but they are not interchangeable categories.

A quick label check

  • Look for an EPA registration statement or number and confirm the product in the EPA search tool.
  • Identify the active ingredient exactly as printed, such as DEET, picaridin, OLE, or PMD.
  • Read the labeled protection time for mosquitoes rather than borrowing a duration from another product.
  • Check whether the label covers the intended user, including children.
  • Note where the product may be applied and any warnings about eyes, mouth, damaged skin, clothing, or enclosed spaces.

Choosing among the three options

Choose DEET when the registered product’s label fits your exposure

DEET is a well-established active ingredient listed by CDC for mosquito-bite prevention. The useful question is not whether “DEET” wins in the abstract, but whether a particular EPA-registered DEET product provides the labeled duration and application method you need. Read the bottle or EPA record before leaving, especially if you expect a long period outdoors.

Use only the amount and frequency directed on the label. Applying more than directed does not turn a product into a different protection category, and the label remains the authority for where and how it may be used.

Choose picaridin when its registered product and label suit you

Picaridin is another CDC-listed option and may appear under the names KBR 3023 or icaridin, depending on the market. Compare the product’s actual EPA label, not a general claim about picaridin. The label tells you the intended application, age instructions, and protection time for that formulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are comparing a picaridin product with a DEET product, write down the labeled duration for each and compare like with like: mosquito protection, the same type of application, and the same planned activity. Do not import a duration from a different concentration, spray, lotion, or region.

Choose formulated OLE/PMD only when the label and age rules fit

Formulated OLE/PMD products are included among CDC’s suitable active ingredients, but they have a specific age restriction: do not use them on children younger than 3 years. For everyone else, verify the product’s EPA registration and follow its label.

The key distinction is formulation. Pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil is not the same product as an EPA-registered OLE/PMD repellent. CDC says the essential oil has not had validated safety and efficacy testing and is not registered as an insect repellent. Do not assume that diluting, blending, or buying an oil labeled “natural” creates a tested repellent.

How to compare protection time without misleading yourself

There is no current, directly comparable CDC table that ranks all three ingredients by hours of mosquito protection. That means a statement such as “ingredient X always lasts longest” overreaches the evidence available for this comparison.

Instead, compare the labels of the exact products you are considering. Record the following in a small table or phone note:

Label detail Why it matters
Active ingredient Confirms which option you are evaluating.
Labeled mosquito-protection time Provides the product-specific duration rather than a generic ingredient claim.
Application format Shows whether the product is intended for skin, clothing, or another use described by the label.
Age directions Identifies whether the product can be used by the intended person.
Reapplication instructions Explains when and how the label permits another application.
Warnings and restrictions Helps prevent use on eyes, mouth, irritated skin, or other prohibited areas.

Compare products only after those details are visible. If a label does not state a value you need, treat it as “not stated” rather than estimating from another formula.

Safe application for adults and children

CDC says EPA-registered repellents are proven safe and effective when used as directed, including for pregnant and breastfeeding people. “As directed” is important: the product label controls the amount, frequency, body areas, and precautions.

For adults

  1. Read the entire label before application, including mosquito-protection time and warnings.
  2. Apply only to the skin or clothing areas permitted by the label.
  3. Keep repellent away from eyes and mouth, and do not apply it to cuts or irritated skin.
  4. Use the label’s reapplication instructions; do not reapply simply because another product advertises a different duration.
  5. Wash treated skin when the label or your activities indicate that the repellent is no longer needed.

For children

  1. Check the minimum age on the specific product label.
  2. Never use OLE/PMD products on children younger than 3 years.
  3. Do not put repellent on a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin.
  4. An adult should apply repellent to their own hands first, then apply it to the child’s face.
  5. Supervise application so the child does not handle the container or rub treated product into the eyes or mouth.

Children’s instructions are product-specific. A product that is appropriate for one age group is not automatically appropriate for another simply because the active ingredient is familiar.

Using repellent with sunscreen and clothing

If you use sunscreen and mosquito repellent, CDC recommends applying sunscreen first and repellent second. Follow both products’ labels, and avoid changing the repellent’s application method to compensate for sunscreen.

Topical repellent is only one layer of bite prevention. CDC also recommends loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing. Permethrin-treated clothing and outdoor gear can provide a complementary option, but permethrin products should not be applied directly to skin. Treat clothing or gear only as the product directions permit.

A practical decision process for common situations

Everyday yard or park use

Choose any EPA-registered DEET, picaridin, or eligible OLE/PMD product whose labeled duration covers the planned activity and whose application instructions are convenient. Bring the container or a photo of its label so you can follow reapplication directions accurately.

A long outdoor outing

Prioritize a product with a clearly stated mosquito-protection time that matches the outing. Check whether heat, water exposure, or other activities change the label’s instructions. Do not assume that an ingredient’s reputation supplies a duration when the bottle does not.

Outdoor time with a child under 3

Exclude OLE/PMD products. Select an age-appropriate EPA-registered alternative and follow the child-specific directions. Use clothing and other permitted barriers as additional protection.

Someone who prefers a plant-derived option

Look for a formulated, EPA-registered OLE/PMD product, not pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil. Explain the age restriction before use and read the label for the product’s protection time and application method.

Pregnancy or breastfeeding

CDC states that EPA-registered repellents are proven safe and effective when used as directed for pregnant and breastfeeding people. Select a registered product and follow its label rather than switching to an unregistered alternative.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake: treating essential oil as interchangeable with OLE/PMD

Correction: Verify EPA registration and the formulated active ingredient. Pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil has not had validated safety and efficacy testing as an insect repellent according to CDC guidance.

What the available evidence cannot establish

The CDC sources used for this guide do not provide a head-to-head, common-duration ranking of DEET, picaridin, and formulated OLE/PMD. They therefore cannot support a universal claim that one ingredient always protects longer, works better for every person, or is the best choice in every setting.

They also do not support treating an unregistered natural product as equivalent to an EPA-registered repellent. When a product’s label, formulation, age range, or protection time differs, the comparison must be made at the product level.

Bottom line for selecting a repellent

Start with EPA registration, then choose among DEET, picaridin, and formulated OLE/PMD by reading the specific label. Use the labeled mosquito-protection time and application directions, not a generic ranking. Keep pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil separate from registered OLE/PMD repellents, avoid OLE/PMD products for children under 3, apply sunscreen before repellent, and add protective clothing or properly used treated gear when appropriate.
