Start with the setting that controls sharpness: select your monitor in Settings > System > Display and choose the resolution marked Recommended. If that makes text or controls too small, increase Scale or Text size rather than lowering resolution. Then set brightness for the room, use Night light only if warmer colors are more comfortable, select a supported refresh rate, and reduce reflections with monitor placement or an optional glare filter.
What each monitor setting actually changes
“Sharper,” “larger,” “brighter,” “smoother,” and “less reflective” describe different problems. Resolution determines how crisply the desktop is rendered. Scaling and text size determine how large interface elements and letters appear. Brightness changes overall luminance, while Night light changes the color balance. Refresh rate affects motion smoothness, not the underlying detail of static text. Reflections are controlled mainly by the screen’s position and the light in the room.

Change one setting at a time and use the same document or web page to judge the result. That makes it possible to tell whether a change solved the problem or merely traded one discomfort for another.
1. Set the recommended resolution first
Windows 11 path
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Display.
- If more than one screen is connected, click the monitor you want to adjust.
- Under Display resolution, select the option labeled Recommended.
- Keep the change when Windows asks for confirmation.
The recommended value normally corresponds to the display’s native pixel grid, so letters are mapped cleanly to the panel. A lower value can make the entire desktop look soft because Windows has to scale the image to fit. Microsoft Support warns that a monitor may support resolutions below its native resolution, but text will not look as sharp; the picture can also appear small, centered, bordered in black, or stretched.

Why lowering resolution is usually the wrong fix for small text
Lowering resolution does make interface elements occupy more physical space, but it sacrifices detail everywhere: text edges, icons, photographs, and video. Use scaling or text-size controls when the recommended resolution is difficult to read. Those controls enlarge content while preserving the panel’s native detail.
If the expected resolution is missing
Do not assume that a lower resolution will improve clarity when the recommended option is absent. Check that the monitor is connected to the intended graphics output, reseat or replace a questionable cable, and install the correct graphics driver. Adapters, docks, and older connection standards can also limit the modes Windows offers. After correcting the connection or driver, return to Settings > System > Display and check the list again.
2. Make text bigger with Scale or Text size
Scale: enlarge the whole interface
In Settings > System > Display, open the Scale menu and choose a larger percentage when menus, buttons, icons, and application controls are all too small. Keep the recommended resolution selected while you test scale values. Some programs need to be closed and reopened before the new size appears everywhere.

If icons and controls are comfortable but words are not, open Settings > Accessibility > Text size. Move the slider, preview the sample, and select Apply. This is the more targeted choice for reading discomfort because it increases text while leaving most other interface dimensions alone. Individual applications may use their own zoom or font settings, so a program can still require a separate adjustment.

Scale versus text size
| Problem | Setting to try | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Everything is too small | Display Scale | Windows interface elements, including text, icons, and controls |
| Only letters are too small | Accessibility > Text size | System text while preserving most other dimensions |
| Text looks blurry after changing size | Return to Recommended resolution, then adjust scale or text size | Restores native rendering before resizing content |
These controls solve legibility, not a faulty panel, smeared cable signal, or an incorrectly selected resolution. If edges remain fuzzy at the recommended resolution, investigate the connection, graphics driver, and the application itself.
3. Set brightness for the room, not by a universal number
Brightness should be comfortable against the actual light around the monitor. A setting that works in a dim room may look harsh in a sunlit office, while a very low setting in daylight can force you to strain to distinguish details. There is no single numeric brightness level that suits every panel, room, or task.
External desktop monitors
Windows often does not provide a brightness slider for a conventional monitor. Use the display’s physical buttons or joystick to open its on-screen display (OSD), then find Brightness. The exact menu names vary by manufacturer. Make small changes while viewing a white page and a dark page; stop when both remain easy to distinguish without a glowing or washed-out appearance.

Laptops and built-in displays
A laptop may expose brightness in Settings > System > Display or through keyboard brightness keys. If the slider is unavailable, update the display or graphics driver and check the laptop maker’s controls. Do not confuse brightness with contrast, sharpness, or a color profile; those affect the image differently.

Brightness and color comfort
Brightness changes how much light the screen emits. It does not increase pixel detail. If text appears gray because the panel is too dim, a modest brightness increase may improve legibility; if the screen is glaring, reducing brightness and controlling room light may help more than changing resolution.
4. Use Night light only for warmer evening color
Open Settings > System > Display > Night light to turn the feature on, adjust its strength, or schedule it. Windows can run Night light from sunset to sunrise or during custom hours.
Night light shifts the display toward warmer colors. Some people prefer that appearance in the evening, but it is a color-comfort preference, not a text-sharpness setting. It cannot repair a low-resolution image, and it changes how colors are perceived. Turn it off when accurate color matters, such as photo editing or color-sensitive design, and judge the result with the task you actually perform.

Windows path
- Open Settings > System > Display and select the monitor.
- Open Advanced display.
- Under the selected display, open Choose a refresh rate.
- Select a rate that the monitor and connection support at the current resolution.
A higher supported rate can make scrolling, pointer movement, and digital inking feel smoother. It does not substitute for the recommended resolution and generally does not make a still paragraph more detailed. The available rates depend on the panel, graphics hardware, cable, adapter, and resolution.

Check resolution after changing refresh rate
Some combinations cannot run the current resolution at the selected rate. Windows may change the resolution when you choose an unsupported combination. Recheck both Display resolution and Advanced display afterward. If the picture becomes soft, return to the recommended resolution and select a supported rate, even if it is lower.
6. Reduce reflections before buying an accessory
Change the monitor or room first
- Rotate or tilt the display so windows and lamps are not reflected directly toward your eyes.
- Move a bright light source out of the screen’s reflection path.
- Use blinds, curtains, or softer room lighting when daylight creates a mirror-like patch.
- Recheck brightness after changing the room; a screen that seemed dim in glare may be too bright once reflections are removed.
The American Optometric Association advises reducing glare by adjusting device settings or using a glare filter to decrease reflected light. A filter is optional, not a requirement for a clear display. If you use one, measure the visible screen area and match the filter’s dimensions and mounting method to the monitor. A poorly sized filter can leave uncovered reflective edges, interfere with a webcam or bezel, or create its own haze.
Match the setting to the symptom
| What you notice | First adjustment | Do not use as a substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Letter edges look soft at every size | Select the Recommended resolution; then check cable and graphics driver if it is unavailable | Lower resolution |
| Text is crisp but too small | Increase Display Scale or Accessibility > Text size | Lower resolution |
| Screen feels harsh or washed out | Set brightness for the room and task | Night light as a sharpness fix |
| Warm evening color feels easier | Enable or schedule Night light | Expecting more detail |
| Scrolling looks uneven | Select a higher supported refresh rate | Changing text size |
| Letters are obscured by bright patches | Change monitor angle or room lighting; consider a compatible glare filter | Increasing brightness alone |
A reliable adjustment sequence
- Select the monitor. In Settings > System > Display, make sure changes apply to the intended screen.
- Restore native detail. Choose the resolution marked Recommended.
- Fix size without sacrificing detail. Increase Scale for a larger overall interface or Text size for larger letters only.
- Set luminance. Adjust the laptop slider or external monitor OSD to match the room.
- Decide on color warmth. Enable Night light only if its warmer appearance suits the time and task.
- Set motion smoothness. Choose a supported refresh rate, then verify that the recommended resolution remains selected.
- Remove reflections. Reposition the screen and lights before considering an optional filter.
- Test one change at a time. Read a familiar document, scroll a web page, and view both light and dark content after each adjustment.
Troubleshooting common results
Text became larger but blurry
Check Settings > System > Display > Display resolution. Restore the value marked Recommended, then use Scale or Text size to enlarge content. If only one application remains blurry, close and reopen it; its own display-scaling behavior may not have refreshed.
The recommended option is not listed
Confirm the selected monitor, inspect the cable and any dock or adapter, and update the graphics driver. A connection that cannot carry the panel’s native mode can hide the option. Avoid choosing a lower mode merely because it is available.

Changing refresh rate changed the picture size
Return to Advanced display and inspect the active mode. Select a refresh rate that is explicitly offered for the recommended resolution, then confirm the resolution again. The highest number is not automatically the best choice if it forces a lower-resolution image.
Windows has no brightness slider
For an external desktop monitor, use its OSD buttons or joystick. Windows commonly controls brightness directly only on displays that expose that function to the operating system. This is normal and does not mean the monitor cannot be adjusted.
Night light makes work colors look wrong
Turn Night light off temporarily or schedule it outside color-critical hours. Because it warms the entire image, skin tones, illustrations, and other colors will not look the same as they do with the feature disabled.
Glare remains after changing brightness
Brightness cannot remove a reflected window or lamp. Change the display angle and room lighting first. If reflections still interfere, consider a glare filter sized for that monitor and treat it as an optional accessory rather than a cure for poor resolution.
Windows version and hardware caveats
The paths above describe Windows 11 and the corresponding Windows 10 controls. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so it should not be treated as a current supported operating system; labels and available options can also differ by update. Display capabilities vary with the monitor, graphics hardware, driver, cable, adapter, and connection type. For color-critical work, follow the monitor manufacturer’s manual and dedicated calibration guidance rather than relying only on these comfort settings.
