Set brightness so the screen is broadly balanced with the light in the room, then set contrast and text size so letters and image details are easy to distinguish without crushed shadows, blown highlights or a harsh-looking picture.
Glare control, viewing distance, evening display habits and regular breaks matter as much as the on-screen sliders. The steps below follow guidance from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Mayo Clinic and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), while keeping image quality intact.

Start with the settings that affect comfort most
Brightness: match the room, not a preset number
Brightness is the monitor control most dependent on context. The AAO’s 2024 computer-use guidance says to “Adjust your screen brightness to match the level of light around you.” A screen that looks dramatically brighter than its surroundings can feel uncomfortable, while one that is too dim may force you to squint or lean toward the display. There is no evidence in the cited guidance for a universal nit value or slider percentage.
Adjust brightness while viewing the documents, websites or games you normally use, under the lighting conditions in which you normally use them. Recheck it when daylight changes, when you move from a bright office to a dim room, or when you turn a lamp on or off. This is a comfort adjustment, not an eye-health target.

Contrast: improve separation without clipping detail
Contrast should make text and important image features distinct. The AAO suggests trying increased contrast, and Mayo Clinic advises setting contrast and brightness “to a level that’s comfortable for you.” Raise contrast gradually while looking at small text and at pictures containing both dark and light areas. If dark tones merge into one block, bright areas lose texture, or the picture looks harsh, move back from the extreme.
Neither source establishes a best contrast ratio or percentage for every display and user. A setting that helps a spreadsheet reader may be unsuitable for photo editing, where preserving tonal detail is more important than maximum punch.

Text size: solve readability directly
When letters are difficult to read, enlarge text before compensating with excessive brightness or by moving your face closer to the panel. Mayo Clinic includes larger text among its eyestrain measures. Use your operating system’s display-scaling control, the application’s zoom command, or a browser’s page-zoom setting. Increase only as much as needed to read comfortably so you do not lose useful content area.

A step-by-step setup that preserves picture quality
- Choose a neutral starting mode. Select the monitor’s Standard, sRGB or equivalent neutral picture mode if one is available. Avoid beginning with a vivid, showroom or game preset that may exaggerate brightness and saturation. If you perform color-critical work, keep a color-accurate mode for that work and make comfort changes around it rather than judging color from an intentionally boosted preset.
- Set the room before the screen. Turn on the lights you actually use and close or open blinds as you would during a normal session. A monitor can appear comfortable in a dark test room and painfully bright beside a sunlit window, so calibrate in the real environment.
- Adjust brightness with ordinary content on screen. Display a page containing black text, white background and some mid-tone graphics. Lower or raise the brightness until the white page no longer looks like a light source compared with the room, but text remains easy to read. Recheck at different times of day instead of treating the first position as permanent.
- Set contrast while checking dark and light detail. Use text plus an image with shadows and highlights. Increase contrast only until separation improves; back off if letters acquire halos or image detail disappears at either end of the tonal range. Do not assume the highest slider position is healthiest or clearer.
- Enlarge text and interface elements as needed. Increase system scaling, application zoom or browser zoom rather than placing the monitor unusually close. This often improves reading comfort without changing the image itself.
- Inspect reflections from your normal seat. Look for windows, lamps and overhead fixtures reflected in dark parts of the screen. Move the display or the light source first. If reflections remain after those free changes, a matte anti-glare filter can be an optional accessory; verify the filter’s dimensions and mounting method for your specific display.
- Set evening color and brightness for sleep habits, not as an eye-damage treatment. A warmer night mode can be useful if it feels comfortable and helps you reduce stimulating screen exposure before bed. It is not proof that the monitor’s blue light is damaging your eyes.
- Use the setup for a normal work session, then reassess. Comfort is easier to judge after reading, editing or gaming for a while than by staring at a settings menu. Make one change at a time so you know which adjustment helped.
How the main options compare
| Adjustment | Effect on text and image legibility | Relationship to room comfort | Reflection or glare impact | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Controls overall screen luminance; too low can make reading difficult, while too high can make a white page overpowering. | Should be balanced with surrounding light; no universal percentage or nit target is established. | Does not remove reflections, although a dimmer screen may make them less conspicuous. | Daytime and nighttime matching to the actual room. |
| Contrast | Can strengthen text separation, but an extreme value may erase shadow or highlight detail. | Use the level that feels clear rather than automatically maximizing it. | Cannot fix a lamp or window reflected on the panel. | Legibility and image-detail tuning in any room. |
| Text scaling or zoom | Improves reading size without changing the monitor’s luminance or color rendering. | Reduces the temptation to lean in or squint. | No direct effect on reflections. | Documents, browsers, code and other text-heavy work. |
| Night or warm mode | Changes color appearance; photos and design work may no longer look color-accurate. | May feel more comfortable in the evening and support reduced bedtime exposure. | Does not remove glare. | Evening use and sleep-oriented routines, not a daytime quality standard. |
| Matte anti-glare filter | May slightly alter perceived sharpness or sparkle, depending on the filter. | Useful only when reflections remain troublesome after placement and lighting changes. | Directly reduces reflected highlights; fit depends on display dimensions and mounting style. | Displays that cannot be repositioned or whose room lighting cannot be changed. |
Position, lighting and glare can undo good slider settings
Place the monitor at a workable distance
The AAO suggests about 25 inches, roughly an arm’s length, from the eyes. OSHA gives a preferred range of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm). These are ergonomic starting points, not a requirement for every screen size, resolution or user. A very large display may need to sit farther away so you can see the whole image without repeatedly turning your head; a small laptop display may naturally be closer.

Angle the screen and your gaze
Set the monitor so your gaze falls slightly downward when you look toward the center. Adjust the chair, desk or stand rather than bending your neck for long periods. The goal is a relaxed viewing posture in which you can read the enlarged text you selected without creeping toward the panel.
Remove direct and reflected light
OSHA warns that direct light reflected on a screen makes images harder to see and can contribute to eyestrain and fatigue. Place the display perpendicular to a window instead of directly facing it, close blinds when sunlight strikes the panel, and reposition overhead fixtures or desk lamps that appear in the reflection. The Mayo Clinic also lists reducing glare as part of eyestrain care. A matte filter is a fallback after these changes, not the first solution.

Night mode and blue light: what they do and do not prove
The AAO’s 2025 guidance states: “The small amount of blue light coming from computer screens has never been shown to harm your eyes.” It does not recommend blue-light-blocking glasses as a computer-eyestrain fix. A warmer night mode is therefore best understood as an evening comfort and sleep-habit option, not a medical shield.
Use night mode when its warmer color is pleasant and when it helps you reduce bright, stimulating screen use before bed. Turn it off or choose a neutral profile when accurate color matters, such as editing photographs or checking product colors. Lower the overall brightness to suit the room separately; a warm tint does not make an overly bright screen appropriate for a dark room.

Breaks, blinking and symptom checks
Follow the 20-20-20 rule
Mayo Clinic recommends that every 20 minutes you look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. A timer, calendar reminder or break software can make the habit easier, but the distance and duration are the important parts. During breaks, blink normally and let your eyes refocus on a distant object rather than another close screen.
Know when settings are not the answer
Endless slider changes are not a substitute for an eye examination. Seek advice from an eye-care professional if discomfort persists or you have blurred vision, eye pain, light sensitivity, redness or watering. Those symptoms can have causes unrelated to the monitor, and a professional can assess vision and ocular health instead of treating every problem as a calibration issue.
Troubleshoot by symptom without sacrificing the picture
“The screen feels painfully bright.”
- Check the room first: a dark room beside a bright monitor exaggerates the mismatch.
- Lower brightness while displaying ordinary white-background content.
- Look for a lamp or window reflection that is making you raise brightness to overpower glare; remove the reflection instead.
“Text is hard to read, but the image looks vivid.”
- Increase text size or application zoom.
- Make a modest contrast adjustment and check that thin strokes remain distinct.
- Verify that scaling has not made text blurry; if it has, use the operating system’s recommended scaling or the application’s own zoom control.
“Dark scenes look crushed or highlights look blank.”
- Reduce contrast from its extreme setting.
- Return to a neutral picture mode if a vivid preset is exaggerating the range.
- Check for room reflections before changing the image controls again; glare can hide detail even when the panel is calibrated reasonably.
“My eyes tire only in the evening.”
- Match brightness to the lower evening light.
- Try a warmer night mode if it feels comfortable and supports an earlier screen cutoff.
- Keep the 20-20-20 breaks even when the color temperature is warmer.
“A filter made the image look hazy.”
- Confirm that the filter is the correct size and mounted flat.
- Compare it with a repositioned monitor and changed room lighting; those free measures may solve the glare without adding a layer over the panel.
- If reflections are gone but sharpness is unacceptable, remove the filter and continue working on light placement.
A practical checklist for a comfortable, accurate setup
- Use a neutral starting picture mode.
- Match brightness to the light surrounding the monitor, with no fixed percentage assumed.
- Set contrast for clear text and preserved shadow and highlight detail.
- Increase text size instead of moving unusually close.
- Keep the screen about an arm’s length away as a starting point; OSHA’s preferred range is 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm).
- Angle the display so your gaze is slightly downward.
- Eliminate window, lamp and overhead-light reflections before buying an accessory.
- Use a properly fitted matte filter only if glare remains.
- Use night mode for evening comfort or sleep routines, not as evidence of protection from blue-light damage.
- Take a 20-second look at least 20 feet away every 20 minutes.
- Get professional advice for persistent pain, light sensitivity, redness, watering or ongoing vision changes.
