Buy the Digital Standard Edition if you want the complete Modern Warfare 4 game at the lowest digital tier. It includes Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, along with the digital preorder bonuses and the relevant early-access windows.
Choose the Digital Vault Edition only if its operator packs, five Signature Weapons, one season of BlackCell and DMZ Deployment Bonus justify the higher price for you. Choose a physical Standard Edition on PS5 or Xbox Series X if you specifically want a disc; it contains the full base game but cannot be upgraded to Vault.

The short answer
- Best value for most players: Digital Standard. You receive all three core modes and digital preorder rewards.
- Best for DMZ specialists and cosmetic collectors: Digital Vault, because it adds the Deployment Bonus, premium operator content, Signature Weapons and one season of BlackCell.
- Best for disc buyers: Physical Standard for PS5 or Xbox Series X. It is the complete base game on that platform, but there is no path to add Vault content later.
The decision is therefore less about access to the game itself and more about whether you will use the Vault extras. Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ are not locked behind Vault.

Campaign
Every edition includes the single-player Campaign. The official store describes missions moving through Korea, New York, Paris, Mumbai and assaults in occupied territories. Digital preorders and prepurchases receive campaign early access beginning October 16, 2026. The exact time you can launch can depend on your platform, region, account settings and service availability.

Multiplayer
Multiplayer is part of the base game rather than a Vault-exclusive feature. Activision describes a grounded, precise style with fluid movement, 12 all-new 6v6 maps at launch, and larger maps that combine vehicles with infantry. Those 12 maps are the concrete launch figure published in the official store information; no independent performance or balance testing is implied by that number.
DMZ
DMZ is also included in every edition. It is described as an extraction mode in which you loot, fight, negotiate and attempt to leave with what you carried out. Digital editions receive DMZ early access beginning October 20, 2026. Vault adds advantages for this mode, but the mode itself is not exclusive to Vault.

What you get with Digital Standard
Digital Standard is the uncomplicated choice when your priority is playing the game rather than collecting add-ons. It contains the complete base game and therefore gives access to Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. A digital preorder or prepurchase also supplies the early-access windows and listed preorder rewards.
Digital preorder rewards
- Hunter Killer Operator Skin.
- Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, with the related Moonlit Pearl camo rewards identified in the preorder materials.
- Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint.
- Additional digital preorder rewards, some of which can be used in Black Ops 7 or Warzone.
These bonuses are attached to the digital preorder offer, not to the Vault label alone. If you are buying a digital copy before launch and do not care about premium operator packs or BlackCell, Standard delivers the core experience and the relevant preorder items.
What Vault adds
Vault is a digital-only bundle built around cosmetics, seasonal progression and DMZ utility. It does not add a separate campaign, a different multiplayer ruleset or an exclusive game mode.

Hostile Alliance Operator Pack
This pack contains skins for Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix. The value is visual and character-focused: it gives you additional operator appearances rather than new missions or gameplay systems.
Special Forces Operator Pack
The Special Forces pack adds operators representing France, Germany, South Korea and the United Kingdom, along with voice packs. If you mainly use one preferred operator or do not care about alternate appearances, this part of Vault may have little practical value.
Five Signature Weapons
Vault includes five Signature Weapons. The materials identify the collection as a Vault addition; they do not establish a separate campaign or multiplayer mode attached to those weapons. Treat them as premium weapon content when deciding whether the bundle fits how you play.
One season of BlackCell
The Vault package includes one season of BlackCell. Activision and Xbox describe that entitlement as including:
- 1,100 COD Points.
- 20 Battle Pass Tier Skips.
- An exclusive Operator.
- An exclusive Weapon Blueprint.
- A Battle Pass containing more than 100 unlockable rewards.
BlackCell is a seasonal entitlement. The stated contents apply to the included season, so do not assume that buying Vault permanently covers future seasons.

DMZ Deployment Bonus
For DMZ players, Vault’s most functional addition is the Deployment Bonus. It provides one extra Active Duty slot and the following equipment and contracts:

An extra Active Duty slot can matter if you maintain multiple operators or want more flexibility between deployments. The other items are consumable or equipment-related bonuses, so their usefulness depends on how often you play DMZ and how quickly you use those resources.
Early access and preorder timing
Any digital-edition preorder or prepurchase receives the advertised early-access windows: Campaign from October 16, 2026, and DMZ from October 20, 2026. The dates are calendar dates supplied for the offer; platform release timing, local timezone, account region and online-service availability can affect the moment access appears.
Physical Standard buyers should not assume that inserting a disc grants the same digital preorder package. The physical-edition terms identify the disc as the full base game but distinguish it from the digital rewards and do not provide a Vault upgrade route.
Can you upgrade to Vault later?
Digital Standard owners
Yes. Activision lists a Digital Standard-to-Vault upgrade on the same platform at a suggested retail price of $30. The upgrade is a separate transaction, and the 10% loyalty discount described below does not apply to a later Vault upgrade.

Physical Standard owners
No. Physical editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X cannot be upgraded to Vault. If you think you may eventually want the operator packs, Signature Weapons, BlackCell or DMZ Deployment Bonus, buying Digital Standard preserves an upgrade path that the disc edition does not.
Platform and account limits
The upgrade applies on the same platform. A purchase on one platform account should not be treated as a transferable entitlement to another platform. Check the store account and platform shown at checkout before confirming the transaction.

Eligible returning Call of Duty players can receive a 10% Vault loyalty discount when they preorder or prepurchase digitally on the same platform account used for a qualifying prior title. Activision states that the offer ends October 23, 2026, applies to Vault, and does not apply to a later Vault upgrade.
Eligibility is account-specific rather than automatic for everyone who has played a previous game. Confirm that the qualifying title is associated with the account you are using and that the discount appears before payment. The offer is also time-limited, so an eligible player who waits past October 23, 2026 should not assume the reduction remains available.

Which edition fits your play style?
Campaign-first players
Choose Digital Standard unless the Vault cosmetics are important to you. All editions include Campaign, and digital preorder early access is available without buying Vault. The physical Standard Edition is also sufficient if you want a disc and do not need digital preorder content or a future upgrade.

Regular multiplayer players
Start with Standard. The launch map count, core movement systems and larger vehicle-and-infantry maps are base-game features. Vault can change how your operators and weapons look, and BlackCell can accelerate seasonal progression, but the edition does not provide a separate multiplayer mode.
DMZ-focused players
Vault is the strongest case for paying more. DMZ is playable in Standard, including digital early access, but Vault is the only edition with the extra Active Duty slot and the listed equipment and contract bonuses. If those resources would be used regularly, the bundle has a direct connection to your routine. If you play DMZ occasionally, Standard may be enough.
Collectors and disc buyers
Select Physical Standard on PS5 or Xbox Series X when owning a disc is the deciding factor. Make that choice knowing that the physical copy cannot later become Vault and does not carry the digital preorder package described for digital editions.

Look for the 10% loyalty offer on the same platform account before checkout. Compare the displayed Vault price with Digital Standard plus the separately listed $30 upgrade price, remembering that the loyalty discount is not applied to the upgrade transaction.
A practical buying checklist
- Choose your format: select digital if you want preorder rewards or a possible Standard-to-Vault upgrade; select physical only if the disc is more important than those options.
- Confirm the platform: verify PS5, Xbox Series X or your intended digital storefront before paying.
- Decide whether Vault content changes your decision: count the operator packs, five Signature Weapons, one BlackCell season and DMZ Deployment Bonus as extras, not required game modes.
- Check early-access dates: digital Campaign access is listed for October 16, 2026, and digital DMZ access for October 20, 2026, subject to platform and service timing.
- Check account eligibility: if you are a returning player, confirm the 10% Vault loyalty discount and its October 23, 2026 end date.
- Review the final store listing: verify the seller, platform, region and current price. Retail availability and regional pricing can change.
Bottom line for each edition
Digital Standard is the default recommendation because it supplies the complete game, all three modes and digital preorder benefits without charging for content you may not use. Digital Vault is justified for a committed DMZ player or someone who specifically wants the operator collections, Signature Weapons and a season of BlackCell. Physical Standard is the right format-first decision for PS5 and Xbox Series X disc buyers, provided they accept that Vault cannot be added afterward.
