For smartphones, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are often counted together as the leading family. These are rounded historical estimates, not audited totals, and the answer changes depending on whether feature phones count and whether related models are grouped.
How the all-time ranking works
Overall mobile-phone rankings include feature phones as well as smartphones. That distinction matters: several Nokia feature phones sold before smartphones became the default choice, reaching large mass-market and first-time-buyer audiences. A smartphone-only list is a different comparison.

Counts also depend on what is being ranked. Some entries are single models, some combine variants such as two iPhone sizes, and others cover a series spanning multiple generations. The figures below are rounded estimates from iTechGuides’ August 2026 compilation, which draws on public manufacturer milestones, analyst estimates, industry reporting and historical data. The compilation notes that no universally audited public database settles every model’s lifetime total.

| Rank in the cited compilation | Phone or group | Estimated sales | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nokia 1100 | 250 million+ | Individual model; estimate, not an audited count. |
| 2 | Nokia 1110 | About 248–250 million | Individual model; its estimated total is too close to the Nokia 1100’s to establish a confident two-million-unit gap. |
| 3 | iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus | About 222.4 million | Combined family estimate for two sizes, not the iPhone 6 alone. |
| 4 | Nokia 105 series | About 200 million | Series total, not one model generation. |
| 5 | iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus | About 173.8–174.5 million | Combined estimate for two variants. |
| 6 | iPhone 5S | About 163.7–165 million | Individual model estimate. |
| 7 | Nokia 3210 | About 160–161 million | Individual model estimate. |
| 8 | iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus | About 156.7–160 million | Combined estimate for two variants. |
| 9 | iPhone 11 family | About 156–159 million | Family estimate; not a single-model count. |
| 10 | iPhone XR, XS and XS Max | About 150.7–151 million | Grouped estimate for three models. |
All values and groupings in this table are reported by iTechGuides’ August 18, 2026 compilation. They should be treated as approximate rankings: sources may use different counting rules, and the lower positions are not precise enough to imply a definitive ordering across close estimates.

Why Nokia feature phones rank so highly
The Nokia 1100 and 1110 were basic phones rather than smartphones. Their place at the top reflects the scale of feature-phone markets, not a like-for-like contest with modern smartphones. Including them answers “best-selling mobile phone”; excluding them changes the question to “best-selling smartphone.”
Historical evidence supports the broad scale of Nokia sales, while not resolving exact totals. A 2014 report from the Economic Research Institute of the Finnish Economy (ETLA) says the Nokia 3310, 1100 and 1200 each exceeded 100 million units. It gives launch years of 2000, 2003 and 2007, respectively, and cites a Telegraph report retrieved in 2013 for the sales claim. That is useful historical corroboration, not a current audited count. Read the ETLA report.
Is the iPhone 6 the best-selling smartphone?
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are commonly cited as the best-selling smartphone family, with an estimated combined total of about 222.4 million in the August 2026 iTechGuides compilation. The figure covers both sizes together; it is not a standalone total for the iPhone 6. It is also an estimate rather than a universally audited model-by-model count.

Lists that report the iPhone 6 family alongside individual Nokia models are mixing units of comparison. The family may still be useful for a broad sales comparison, but it should not be described as one phone model outselling another without noting the grouping.

The iPhone 17’s recent performance is a quarterly ranking, not an all-time lifetime tally. Counterpoint Research’s Global Handset Model Sales Tracker placed it first among global smartphone models in both Q1 and Q2 2026, with 6% of global smartphone unit sales in each quarter. In Q2, the ten leading models together represented 26% of global smartphone unit sales. Those market-share figures do not establish the iPhone 17’s cumulative sales or an all-time position. See Counterpoint Research’s global smartphone market-share insights.
How to compare bestseller claims accurately
- Check the category: Does the ranking include feature phones, or only smartphones?
- Check the unit: Is the number for one model, a pair of variants, a family, or a series?
- Check the measure: Is it a lifetime estimate, reported sales, shipments, or a quarterly share of sales?
- Check the evidence: Rounded estimates from compilations are not precise audited totals, and small gaps between estimates may not support a firm rank order.
A tertiary list also gives the Nokia 1100 and 1110 250 million each, the iPhone 6 family 222.4 million, and the Nokia 105 series 200 million. Because that page carries a factual-accuracy dispute notice, it is best treated as a cross-check rather than the primary basis for an exact figure. See the list of best-selling mobile phones.
