Treat refresh-rate choices as app- and preference-dependent, and use passthrough as environmental awareness—not as a replacement for the boundary.
The Quest 3S is part of the Quest 3 family and runs current Quest 3 apps, according to Meta. Menu names can change with Horizon OS updates, so use the labels shown on your headset when they differ from the descriptions below.

Change these settings in this order
- Set and check the boundary. Make the usable area clear of furniture, cables, pets and other obstacles. Redraw the boundary whenever the room layout changes.
- Decide whether runtime or visual quality comes first. Enable Battery Saver only when its reductions are an acceptable trade-off.
- Leave refresh rate at the app or system default unless you have a specific reason to change it. The headset supports several technical values, but there is no universally best choice.
- Use passthrough cautiously. It can help you see your surroundings, but it does not provide the same warning function as the boundary.
- Stop when the headset causes discomfort. Take a break and wait for symptoms to resolve before using it again.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: optimizing battery life or frame timing before making the play area safe and comfortable.

1. Set a clear activity space and use the boundary
The boundary is the first setting to verify because it warns you as you approach the edge of the activity space you defined. That warning is a safety mechanism, not a cosmetic overlay. Keep the entire area inside the boundary usable before starting an active game or fitness app.

What to check
- Remove objects you could hit, trip over or knock down.
- Move charging cables and headset straps out of the walking path.
- Reconsider the boundary if a chair, table or doorway has moved since the last setup.
- Leave enough room for the movements an app expects; do not draw a boundary that includes an obstacle simply because the headset can scan around it.
When the headset asks you to create or redraw the boundary, follow that process rather than dismissing it. If the boundary appears in the wrong place, stop the session and define the space again instead of relying on memory.
Why passthrough is not a substitute
Passthrough can show a view of the real environment through the headset cameras, which may help you notice a person or object. Meta’s passthrough guidance nevertheless states that neither scene information nor passthrough replaces the safety mechanisms provided by the boundary. The two functions are different: passthrough provides environmental awareness, while the boundary warns that you are nearing the edge of your designated activity area.
Do not deliberately move outside the boundary because passthrough is visible. If you need to leave the play area, pause and remove the headset or use the headset’s normal exit procedure.

2. Use Battery Saver only when its trade-offs fit the session
Meta documents Battery Saver at Settings > General > Power. The mode is designed to reduce power use by changing several visual and rendering conditions at once.
| Battery Saver behavior | Documented value | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Display brightness | Reduced to 40% | A dimmer image can extend operating time but may be less comfortable in a bright room. |
| Fixed foveated rendering | Level 3 enabled | Peripheral image detail is reduced more aggressively to lower rendering work. |
| Display refresh rate | Lowered to 72 Hz | Motion and interface updates use the power-saving rate rather than a higher available rate. |
These are system behaviors documented for Horizon OS developers, so the exact wording or location of the control may change in a future software version. Battery Saver is appropriate for a long video, travel or another session where additional runtime matters more than maximum brightness and visual smoothness. It is less suitable when you are evaluating image quality, playing a fast-moving title or troubleshooting a visual problem, because the mode intentionally changes those conditions.
How to decide
- Choose Battery Saver: you are away from a charger, want to postpone recharging, and can accept the reduced display and rendering settings.
- Leave it off: you are comparing graphics, need the clearest peripheral detail, or want the headset to use the normal display behavior for an app.
- Test after switching: close and reopen the app if its behavior does not appear to change immediately. Some software may apply display or rendering changes at launch.
Do not interpret Battery Saver as a performance upgrade. Its purpose is lower power consumption; the associated visual reductions are the cost of that goal.

3. Treat refresh rate as a preference, not a mandatory optimization
Meta’s Quest 3S developer reference lists 72, 80, 90 and 120 Hz as supported refresh-rate values. Those figures describe technical capability in Android system properties and development or testing contexts. They do not establish that every owner has a universal refresh-rate selector in the consumer interface, nor that one value is best for every application.

What refresh rate changes
Refresh rate is how often the display updates each second. A higher value can make head movement and scrolling appear smoother when the application and system can sustain it. It can also increase display and rendering workload, which may reduce runtime. A lower value can be more power-conscious, but some users notice less fluid motion.
Because applications can have their own frame-rate targets and performance limits, changing a system property does not guarantee that every title will render at that rate. An app may select a compatible mode, reduce detail, or remain limited by its own workload.

Practical rule
- Use the default behavior for normal play.
- Change a refresh-rate option only when a particular app, development test or comfort preference gives you a reason.
- Evaluate smoothness and battery use in the same app; conclusions from one title may not apply to another.
- Remember that Battery Saver separately enforces its documented power-saving display behavior.
If you cannot find a refresh-rate control, that is not evidence that the headset is malfunctioning. The developer reference and the consumer settings interface serve different purposes.
4. Use passthrough carefully and respond to discomfort
Passthrough is not natural vision. Meta warns that prolonged exposure can contribute to visual discomfort, motion sickness, disorientation or negative after-effects. These symptoms can occur even when the boundary is configured correctly.
If you feel unwell
- Stop the activity as soon as discomfort appears.
- Take the headset off and rest rather than trying to push through the session.
- Wait until the symptoms have resolved before restarting.
- If symptoms persist or recur, stop using the feature and seek appropriate medical advice.
Short, intermittent use is safer than treating passthrough as an always-on replacement for ordinary vision. It is useful for checking surroundings, but it should not encourage you to walk through an area that has not been cleared or defined by the boundary.

How the priority settings work together
| Priority | Setting to adjust first | Benefit | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical safety | Boundary and clear activity space | Warns as you approach the edge of the defined area | Cannot make an obstructed room safe; the area still must be cleared |
| Longer runtime | Battery Saver | Reduces power demand through coordinated display and rendering changes | Lower brightness, more aggressive foveated rendering and a lower display rate |
| Motion preference | Refresh-rate behavior | Lets compatible software use a supported display mode | No universal best value; app support and workload differ |
| Environmental awareness | Passthrough | Provides a camera view of surroundings | Not natural vision and not a replacement for boundary warnings |
| Comfort | Breaks when symptoms begin | Allows discomfort to resolve before further exposure | Continuing while symptomatic can worsen the experience |
The settings are complementary rather than interchangeable. Battery Saver cannot improve room safety; passthrough cannot replace the boundary; and a higher refresh rate cannot compensate for motion discomfort caused by the content or the display.
A safe first-session checklist
- Inspect the floor and remove trip hazards.
- Define a boundary that covers only the area you can actually use.
- Check the boundary again after moving furniture or changing rooms.
- Start with Battery Saver off if you are learning how an app looks and behaves.
- Use Battery Saver when runtime is the clear priority, then reassess brightness and motion comfort.
- Leave refresh-rate behavior alone unless you have a documented app-specific reason to change it.
- Use passthrough for brief environmental checks, not as permission to ignore the boundary.
- Take the headset off at the first sign of visual discomfort, nausea or disorientation.
What not to change without current device-specific instructions
Quest 3S software evolves, and the available controls can depend on the Horizon OS version. The evidence for this guide does not establish reliable menu paths for comfort, interpupillary-distance adjustment, controllers, hand tracking, privacy, accessibility or notifications. Avoid following an old menu guide that assumes those labels or locations are unchanged. Check the current on-headset wording before altering those options, and treat any path that differs from your software version as version-dependent.
The same caution applies to developer-oriented refresh-rate properties. They are useful for testing and documentation, but they are not proof that a consumer-facing switch exists or that forcing a value will benefit every app.
Bottom line
For most people, the best first change is no performance tweak at all: clear the room and verify the boundary. After that, use Battery Saver when extra runtime is worth reduced brightness and rendering headroom. Keep refresh rate tied to a real app or comfort need, and remember that passthrough improves awareness without replacing the boundary. If passthrough or any content makes you feel unwell, stop and wait until you feel normal before trying again.
