There is no single best fabric or pattern in Dressmaker. The strongest choice is the combination that satisfies the customer’s material, color, occasion, style and budget requirements. Start with the commission, then choose a silhouette and garment components that support its look, verify the fabric cost and quantity, and follow the current build’s pattern-placement and grain or bias instructions. Cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet are useful examples, but they are not a complete catalog or a universal ranking.
What “best” means in Dressmaker
Dressmaker is built around matching a design to a brief rather than discovering one permanently optimal recipe. The making loop runs from sketching and selecting garment components to buying fabric, laying out and cutting pattern pieces, sewing, and finishing with decoration and accessories. Every stage can affect whether the finished commission answers what the customer requested.

It does not present them as a complete in-game catalog, and the documented material descriptions should be read as starting points for matching a commission and an aesthetic. The game’s current full release may contain additional options or changed behavior.

Read the customer’s commission before buying anything
The commission is the first constraint. In the sketchbook, inspect the request and style information before spending money. Record the requirements in a short checklist so that an attractive sample does not pull the design away from the job.
- Occasion: Is the dress intended for everyday wear, work, winter, a formal event, an opera, a ball or another setting?
- Style: What overall mood or visual direction does the customer describe?
- Material: Is a particular fabric requested or implied?
- Color: Does the request specify a color or a narrow color direction?
- Budget: How much must remain for pattern pieces, sewing, decoration and accessories after fabric is purchased?
Use the sketchbook’s previews to inspect fabric samples and style tags before confirming a purchase. The purpose is not to find the most luxurious option; it is to find an option that fulfills the brief without starving the rest of the design.
Material examples and the looks they suggest
The following descriptions come from the beginner material guide. They are useful visual associations, not a guaranteed best-to-worst order or a statement that every commission rewards the same choice.

Cotton for practical, everyday designs
Cotton’s matte, sturdy appearance makes it a sensible starting point for casual, workwear and everyday requests. Pair it with a straightforward silhouette when the customer wants a useful, unfussy garment. Because fabric spending affects the rest of the budget, a practical material can leave more room for a requested collar, sleeve treatment or accessory. Do not assume that choosing cotton automatically earns a better result; it still has to match the stated occasion, color and style.
Linen for relaxed and summer briefs
The guide associates linen with a textured, breathable look and relaxed or summer styles. That makes it a natural candidate when the brief emphasizes ease, warmth or a less formal mood. Let the silhouette reinforce that direction rather than adding components that make the design appear ceremonious. Check the fabric requirement and cost before committing, especially when the commission also calls for multiple decorative details.

Wool for professional or winter clothing
Wool is described as dense and warm-looking, which supports professional and winter wear. A structured bodice or restrained skirt can make that visual language coherent, but the request remains decisive. If the customer asks for a light, relaxed summer dress, wool’s association may work against the brief even if the color is attractive.

Silk’s smooth sheen is associated with elegance and formal events. It can be useful when the occasion demands polish, but the guide and PC Gamer’s review both emphasize budget trade-offs: an expensive silk detail may need to be balanced with a cheaper weave elsewhere. A formal-looking fabric is not worth exhausting the entire allowance if the commission also requires accessories or elaborate construction.
Velvet for dramatic evening looks
Velvet is linked with rich, dramatic texture and opera, ball or high-society looks. It can establish a strong visual statement without relying on a complicated silhouette, although the pattern and decoration still need to support the occasion. As with every material, verify the request and the amount of fabric required before buying.
Choose the pattern as a set of garment components
In the sketchbook, the pattern is not just a single outline. The independent reference describes choices across the bodice, skirt, sleeves and collar, while the creator has described the broader activity as making decisions about fabric, patterns, sewing and decoration. Think in terms of how those components combine.
Bodice
Use the bodice to establish the main structure and to support the requested level of formality. A restrained bodice can keep an everyday dress practical; a more elaborate one may reinforce a ceremonial brief. Avoid choosing it solely because it looks impressive in the preview. Ask whether it works with the material’s visual character and the customer’s stated style.

The skirt changes the silhouette and can either support or undermine the fabric’s contribution. A relaxed brief generally benefits from a shape that reads as easy and wearable, while a ball or opera request can justify a more dramatic outline. Consider fabric quantity as well as appearance: a larger skirt may consume more material and leave less money for finishing details.

Sleeves
Sleeves are both a style signal and a resource decision. Select a shape that belongs with the occasion and the rest of the silhouette. If the commission has a strict budget, an elaborate sleeve may be less useful than preserving funds for a required accessory or a better-fitting main pattern.
Collar

- Choose a silhouette first. Select a compatible bodice and skirt, then add sleeves and a collar that reinforce the same direction.
- Check the fabric price and expected quantity. Calculate what will remain for pattern pieces, sewing, decoration and accessories. A more expensive material can force simpler finishing.
- Inspect the placement instructions. Before cutting, look for the current build’s on-screen grain, bias or directional markers. Follow the marker and the instructions shown in your version rather than relying on an old control description.
- Lay out and cut the pieces carefully. Confirm that every required piece fits the available fabric and that its direction agrees with the displayed guidance.
- Sew with the chosen combination in mind. Pattern placement, fabric quantity and stitching are connected parts of the result. Do not treat sewing quality as a last-minute correction for a mismatched design.
- Finish with decoration and accessories. Spend the remaining budget where it supports the brief. A small, coherent finishing choice is preferable to an expensive addition that changes the intended style.
- Review the completed dress against the original request. Check material, color, occasion, silhouette and budget discipline before finalizing.
This order prevents a common mistake: buying an appealing fabric before discovering that the pattern, quantity or accessories no longer fit the commission.
Balance fabric cost, quantity and finishing money

Pattern placement, grain and bias matter

The beginner guide includes a horizontal-arrow instruction for Prototype 0.5.5. That control detail is version-sensitive and should not be presented as a universal instruction for the current full release. Instead, read the marker and prompt displayed in your build. The reliable principle is stable even when the interface changes: place each piece according to the game’s current grain or bias guidance.
If a piece will not fit
- Recheck whether the piece is rotated against the directional marker.
- Confirm that another piece has not consumed the required area.
- Review the fabric quantity and whether the selected skirt or sleeve is unusually large.
- Return to the pattern choice before cutting if the layout cannot satisfy the instructions.
If the finished look seems wrong
- Check whether a grain or bias instruction was ignored.
- Separate a fabric mismatch from a construction problem: the material may fit the occasion while the silhouette does not.

Summer or relaxed style
Linen is the guide’s clearest association for a relaxed or summer look. Let the texture and lighter mood remain visible in the component choices. If the brief specifies another material, honor that requirement and use the pattern and accessories to preserve the requested atmosphere.
Formal or elegant occasion
Silk’s smooth sheen is associated with elegant and formal events. Balance its cost against fabric quantity and finishing needs. A polished silhouette with restrained decoration can be more practical than an expensive material combined with every available detail.

Opera, ball or high-society event
Velvet’s rich, dramatic texture is associated with these occasions. A stronger skirt or collar can reinforce the effect, but verify that the pattern fits the available fabric and leaves money for the accessories required by the commission.
Construction quality is part of the design decision
PC Gamer describes pattern placement, fabric quantities and stitching as connected parts of the making process. That means a good material choice cannot rescue careless layout or a pattern that does not fit the brief. Before sewing, check that the selected pieces are practical for the commission and that the cut respects the displayed directional guidance. During sewing, treat the work as part of the dress’s quality rather than as an invisible final click.
This also explains why a simpler pattern can be the better choice. It may use less fabric, reduce layout pressure and leave enough money for coherent decoration. Simplicity is not automatically a compromise; it can be the design that lets the chosen material and the customer’s request remain clear.

What is and is not established about the game’s catalog
No reviewed source establishes an official, exhaustive current list of fabric rankings or a universal optimal fabric-pattern combination. An independent reference labeled Release 0.7.0 reports database counts of 564 fabrics and 178 patterns, but those figures are third-party catalog counts rather than an official developer statistic. They should not be used as proof of the current game’s exact inventory or scoring.
The beginner guide also combines notes from Prototype 0.5.5 with descriptions of the released Steam game. Prototype controls and build-specific behavior may not apply unchanged. When an instruction conflicts with the current interface, follow the prompt and marker shown in your installation.
A compact decision checklist
- Does the fabric satisfy the customer’s requested material and color?
- Does its appearance support the stated occasion and style?
- Do the bodice, skirt, sleeves and collar reinforce the same silhouette?
- Will the price and required quantity leave room for sewing, decoration and accessories?
- Does the complete pattern layout follow the current grain or bias instruction?
- Is the construction workload practical for this commission?
- After finishing, does the dress still answer the original brief rather than merely looking attractive in isolation?
If the answer to all seven questions is yes, you have made a strong choice even if it is not the most expensive fabric or the most elaborate pattern.

In a Creative Bloq interview published on 6 August 2026, co-creator Sabrina Becker explained: “We really wanted to make sure we made a game about craft and creativity.” That aim is reflected in the way Dressmaker connects material selection, pattern decisions, cutting, sewing and decoration.
