Short answer: none is confirmed to be required. Mattel currently describes Battle for Grayskull as a faction-based RPG in which players join He-Man or Skeletor in the war for Eternia. Its official information does not identify a predecessor that must be completed, and it does not yet establish a release date, complete platform list, or universal regional availability. You can therefore approach it as a standalone game rather than as the final chapter of a required play order.
If you want extra Eternia-themed games while you wait, the best choices depend on the experience you want: Skeletor: Until Next Time is a mobile action runner, Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite is a Luna couch-co-op announcement, and Clash for Eternia: Assault on Castle Grayskull is a physical tabletop game. None is officially identified as a narrative prerequisite for Battle for Grayskull.

What is Battle for Grayskull?
Mattel’s official description presents Battle for Grayskull as “a faction-based RPG that lets players join He-Man or Skeletor in the war for Eternia.” That wording establishes the central choice: you are aligned with one of two opposing factions in a larger conflict. It does not, by itself, establish that the game continues the story of a particular earlier title.

The wider franchise is intentionally broad. Mattel Creations describes Masters of the Universe as combining “swords-and-sorcery action with futuristic sci-fi tech” while exploring the conflict between good and evil. That mixture gives a new RPG plenty of room to establish its own setting, mechanics and continuity without requiring you to know a previous game.
Do you need to play another game first?
No verified prerequisite exists in the available official material. Mattel has not said that players must finish a specific Masters of the Universe game, understand a particular save file, or follow a canon game order before starting Battle for Grayskull.
That distinction matters because a franchise can have several products that share characters or locations without sharing one continuous game storyline. The titles below are related by license and theme, but the sources do not establish that any of them is a direct prequel to Battle for Grayskull, uses the same continuity, or unlocks content in it.
The best optional games and games-adjacent experiences
| Title | Format | Platform or access information | What the official source establishes | Connection to Battle for Grayskull |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skeletor: Until Next Time | Action runner | iOS and Android | Mattel Game Studios presents it as a Masters of the Universe runner with seasonal features, including the He-Man Chase season. | Franchise-themed mobile action; no confirmed story or progression link. |
| Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite | Couch co-op video game | Announced for Amazon Luna GameNight | Amazon Game Studios announced card-collecting battles and competitive trials, with a planned June 5, 2026 launch alongside the theatrical movie. | Another licensed game, not identified as a prequel or required preparation. |
| Clash for Eternia: Assault on Castle Grayskull | Physical board game | Tabletop product; local availability varies | Asmodee Canada’s listing makes Castle Grayskull the centerpiece of the game mode. | Optional tabletop way to spend time in the setting; not a video-game prerequisite. |
| He-Man Tappers of Grayskull | Historical mobile title | Announced by Animoca Brands in 2015 | The announcement described He-Man and Skeletor’s minions battling across Eternia. | Evidence of a past licensed mobile game, not evidence of current playability or a required link. |
Skeletor: Until Next Time
Choose this if you want a quick, character-focused mobile session rather than a role-playing campaign. Mattel Game Studios identifies Skeletor: Until Next Time as an action runner for iOS and Android. Its official page highlights seasonal features and a He-Man Chase season, so the appeal is repeatable runs and rotating events rather than a confirmed lead-in story for Battle for Grayskull.

Before downloading, check the current App Store or Google Play listing in your country. A listing, event schedule or supported-device requirement can change independently of the game’s franchise identity. Nothing in the official description establishes that progress, characters or lore from the runner carry into the upcoming RPG.
Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite
Legends Unite is the most relevant option if your priority is playing with another person on the same screen. Amazon Game Studios’ March 31, 2026 announcement described a couch co-op game for Luna GameNight, built around card-collecting battles and competitive trials. The announcement gave June 5, 2026 as its intended launch date, timed to coincide with the theatrical release of the movie.
That date was an announcement, not a guarantee of present access in every territory. Luna catalogues, GameNight participation, supported devices and regional services can differ. Check Amazon’s current Luna information before planning a session, especially if you are outside the launch market.

There is also no official statement in the cited announcement that Legends Unite shares continuity with Battle for Grayskull. Play it for cooperative battles and its card-collecting structure, not because it is confirmed homework for the faction-based RPG.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Clash for Eternia: Assault on Castle Grayskull
This is a separate tabletop route for fans who want a physical game night. Asmodee Canada’s product listing identifies Castle Grayskull as the centerpiece of the mode. That makes it thematically appropriate for someone interested in Eternia’s most recognizable fortress, but it does not make the board game a playable chapter of Battle for Grayskull.
Because this is a physical product, availability depends on retailers, print runs and country. Confirm that the edition, language and shipping destination suit your group before buying. The available listing does not provide a region-by-region stock comparison.
He-Man Tappers of Grayskull
Animoca Brands announced He-Man Tappers of Grayskull in 2015 and described battles involving He-Man, Skeletor and minions across Eternia. That announcement is useful historical context: the franchise has appeared in mobile game formats before. It does not prove that the title remains downloadable, supported or compatible with current phones, and it does not identify it as connected to Battle for Grayskull.
Do not spend time searching for an old mobile release on the assumption that it is essential. The available evidence supports its historical existence, not a current storefront recommendation.

Which option fits your reason for playing?
You want the closest format match
Start with no preparation, then look for information about Battle for Grayskull itself as Mattel confirms its systems and platforms. The announced games use different structures: an endless-style runner, a couch co-op Luna game and a tabletop product. None is described as a faction-based RPG, so none can reliably teach you the upcoming game’s role-playing systems.
You want a short mobile diversion
Try Skeletor: Until Next Time on iOS or Android. Expect an action-runner format and seasonal content, not a campaign designed to explain the RPG’s factions.
You want local cooperative play
Watch the current Luna GameNight catalogue for Legends Unite. Its announced design emphasizes couch co-op, card-collecting battles and competitive trials. Confirm that the service and game are offered where you live before treating it as a planned activity.

What about older Masters of the Universe video games?
A definitive “currently playable” back catalogue cannot be established from the available official information. The sources reviewed do not verify which legacy releases are still sold, which storefronts host them, whether modern operating systems run them correctly, or where regional rights permit purchase.
That means a historical list would be easy to misread as a shopping guide. If you find an older title through a legitimate storefront, verify four things before paying:
- Platform: Confirm the exact operating system, console model or cloud service supported.
- Region: Check that the listing is available in your country and language.
- Current support: Look for a recent store listing, publisher notice or compatibility information rather than relying on an old review.
- Purpose: Treat the game as optional franchise history unless Mattel explicitly identifies it as part of Battle for Grayskull’s continuity.
These checks protect you from buying a delisted product, an incompatible edition or a game whose relationship to the new RPG is only assumed by fans.
Do not confuse games with merchandise
Mattel also lists a Battle for Eternia 2-in-1 playset featuring Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain. That is a physical toy product, not a game to complete before Battle for Grayskull. It may interest collectors, but owning or using it does not provide a confirmed gameplay advantage or story requirement.
A practical play-before plan
- Start with the RPG’s own announcements. Confirm the release date, platforms, ratings and regional availability when Mattel publishes them.
- Choose one optional experience. Pick the mobile runner for short sessions, the Luna title for couch co-op if it is available to you, or the board game for a physical group activity.
- Keep continuity assumptions separate from enjoyment. Shared names, characters and locations do not prove that two products tell one connected story.
- Check storefront status immediately before purchase. Mobile events, cloud catalogues, print runs and regional listings are volatile.
- Begin Battle for Grayskull when it launches. No confirmed earlier game stands between you and the faction-based RPG.
Bottom line for new and returning fans
You can safely wait for Battle for Grayskull without completing another Masters of the Universe game. If you want more Eternia first, Skeletor: Until Next Time offers mobile action, Legends Unite offers the announced Luna couch-co-op format, and Clash for Eternia: Assault on Castle Grayskull offers a physical Castle Grayskull-focused game night. Enjoy them as separate franchise experiences unless Mattel later confirms a direct narrative or gameplay connection.
