Apple Intelligence on the current macOS 27 generation requires a Mac with Apple silicon, starting with M1. Intel-based Macs are not supported. Your Mac also needs the required macOS release, matching supported device and Siri languages, enough available storage for downloaded models, and a region where Apple Intelligence is available. Most Apple Intelligence features first arrived on compatible Macs with macOS Sequoia 15.1, so the answer depends on whether you mean the current macOS 27 feature set or that earlier generation.
Which Macs are compatible?
For Apple’s current requirements, the deciding hardware test is the chip inside the Mac:

| Mac hardware | Apple Intelligence eligibility | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Apple silicon Mac with M1 or later | Eligible for the macOS 27 generation, subject to software, language and region requirements | Install the required macOS release, then check Apple Intelligence & Siri settings |
| Intel-based Mac | Not in Apple’s supported class | No software update can make an Intel model eligible |
“M1 or later” covers Apple silicon generations released after M1, provided the Mac can install the required macOS version. The processor family matters more than the Mac’s model name, screen size, year or amount of disk space. An older-looking MacBook Pro with an M1 chip can qualify, while a newer Intel Mac does not.
Apple’s current requirements are documented in How to get the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Apple also lists MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro chip in its broader cross-device eligibility information, but the Mac requirement relevant to this guide is Apple silicon M1 or later.

Check your Mac’s chip before changing anything
You can identify the hardware in less than a minute. The result tells you whether an operating-system update can help or whether the Mac is outside Apple’s supported hardware class.
- Choose the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Select About This Mac.
- Read the line labeled Chip or Processor. A chip entry such as “Apple M1,” “Apple M2,” “Apple M3” or a later Apple silicon designation is the supported type. An entry beginning with “Intel” is not.
- Note the macOS version shown in the same window. You will need a compatible release as well as compatible hardware.
On some versions of macOS, selecting More Info opens System Settings and provides the chip and memory details. Do not use the Mac’s purchase year as a substitute for this check: Apple sold both Intel and Apple silicon Macs during overlapping years.
macOS versions: macOS 27 versus Sequoia 15.1
Apple’s requirements are version-sensitive, so there is no single timeless “minimum macOS” answer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCurrent macOS 27 generation
Apple’s current support article names macOS 27 for the next-generation Apple Intelligence requirements. A compatible Mac therefore needs both an M1-or-later chip and the macOS 27 release, when that generation is the feature set you want to use. Apple recommends keeping macOS updated so that the Mac receives the latest available Apple Intelligence features and fixes.

Original feature baseline: macOS Sequoia 15.1
Apple says most Apple Intelligence features became available on supported Mac models with macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later. That statement describes the first broad availability of the earlier feature generation; it should not be read as replacing the current macOS 27 requirement for current-generation features. If you are reading an older setup guide, its reference to Sequoia 15.1 is the historical baseline, not a promise that every later feature works on that release.
| Question | Relevant Apple version statement | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| When did most features first become available on supported Macs? | macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later | Historical starting point for the first feature generation |
| What does Apple name for the current generation? | macOS 27 | Use this release requirement when checking current-generation support |
To check for updates, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. Install only a release that Apple offers for your particular Mac. If Software Update does not offer macOS 27, that may indicate the model cannot run that release, even if its chip is Apple silicon.
Storage and memory requirements
Apple Intelligence downloads on-device models, so the installation needs free storage in addition to the space occupied by macOS and your files. Apple lists the following figures in its current support material:
| Apple-published figure | Scope | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 8 GB | Other compatible devices | On-device Apple Intelligence storage; the amount can change with software and feature updates |
| Up to 14 GB | Certain Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory | Applies to the specified higher-memory M3-or-later Macs, not automatically to every M3 model |
These are maximum amounts Apple lists for the applicable categories, not a universal fixed download size. Apple can change model sizes as features evolve. A Mac may therefore meet the chip requirement but still need you to free disk space before models can be downloaded or an operating-system update can complete.

How to check available space
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Review the available capacity, not just the total disk size.
- Keep additional headroom for the macOS installer and temporary files. Apple’s published Apple Intelligence figure is not a recommendation to fill the drive to exactly that limit.
- If space is low, remove or move large, nonessential files, empty the Trash, and review the Storage recommendations before trying the update again.
Unified memory is different from storage. The 12 GB condition in Apple’s 14 GB statement refers to unified memory on certain M3-or-later Macs; it does not mean that a Mac with 12 GB of free disk space qualifies.
Language settings must match
Apple requires the Mac’s device language and Siri language to be set to the same supported language. Having one setting supported while the other is different can prevent Apple Intelligence from appearing or can limit available features.
Apple’s current supported-language list includes:
Recommended Free Tools
- English
- Danish
- Dutch
- French
- German
- Italian
- Norwegian
- Portuguese
- Spanish
- Swedish
- Turkish
- Vietnamese
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
- Japanese
- Korean
Availability can vary by language and region, and not every feature is necessarily offered in every language. To inspect the settings, use Apple menu > System Settings > General > Language & Region for the Mac’s language, then open System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri to check Siri’s language. Set them to the same supported choice, then allow the Mac time to download the required models after enabling Apple Intelligence.

Region and purchase-location restrictions
Compatible hardware and software do not guarantee availability everywhere. Apple documents special restrictions for supported devices purchased in mainland China, and separate conditions for devices purchased elsewhere that depend on where the user is located and which country or region is associated with the Apple Account.
Because these rules can change, check the current country-specific wording in Apple’s requirements article rather than relying on a list copied from an older guide. A Mac bought in one country and used in another can be treated differently from a Mac purchased in the restricted market. The relevant factors can include purchase location, current location and Apple Account region.

Apple Intelligence is not the same as Siri AI beta
Apple’s separate How to get Siri AI page describes Siri AI as a beta with its own requirements. It requires a supported Apple silicon Mac running macOS 27, matching supported device and Siri language settings, and it is initially available in English. Region-specific limits apply, including conditions involving mainland China and the European Union.
Do not treat the absence of Siri AI beta as proof that the rest of Apple Intelligence is unavailable. General Apple Intelligence features and the Siri AI beta are related but distinct availability decisions. A Mac can satisfy the broad Apple Intelligence requirements while a particular Siri AI beta capability remains unavailable because of language, region, rollout or beta status.
Troubleshoot the most common eligibility problems
An Intel Mac has no Apple Intelligence switch
This is expected. Apple’s current Mac class starts at M1, and Intel models are excluded. Updating an Intel Mac to the newest release available for it will not add Apple Intelligence support.
An M1-or-later Mac is updated but the option is absent
- Check About This Mac again to confirm the chip is Apple silicon rather than Intel.
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest compatible release offered for that Mac.
- Verify that the device language and Siri language are identical and appear on Apple’s supported list.
- Check whether your location, Apple Account region or the Mac’s purchase location falls under a documented availability restriction.
- Open System Settings > General > Storage and make room for the on-device models and the macOS update.
The feature appears but some tools are missing
Feature coverage is not identical across languages and regions. Confirm that you are using a supported matching language pair, then check Apple’s current support page for the specific feature. A missing beta Siri capability may reflect its separate rollout rules rather than a hardware failure.
The Mac reports insufficient storage
Free space beyond the published Apple Intelligence allowance so the operating-system installer and temporary files can work. Remove large files or move them to external storage, empty the Trash, restart the Mac, and retry the update or model download. Apple’s figures are “up to” amounts and can change with software updates, so do not assume the requirement will remain identical.
A practical eligibility checklist
- Chip: Apple silicon M1 or later.
- Operating system: macOS 27 for the current generation; macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later was the baseline for most first-generation features.
- Storage: Allow up to 8 GB on other compatible devices, or up to 14 GB on certain M3-or-later Macs with at least 12 GB unified memory.
- Languages: Device and Siri languages match and are supported.
- Region: Your location, Apple Account region and purchase circumstances permit the feature.
- Setup: Apple Intelligence is enabled in System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
If all six checks pass and the option still does not appear, install the latest compatible macOS update, restart, and recheck the Apple Intelligence & Siri pane. For country-specific edge cases, Apple’s current support documentation is the authoritative source because availability rules and supported features can change.
