For a compatible third-party HDR10 monitor, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the external display, and turn on High Dynamic Range. That is the macOS playback setting to check first. It appears only when the Mac, macOS version, display, connection and selected input support the required HDR features.
Turn HDR on for the external display
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Select the external monitor in the display list. If you use more than one external display, choose the one you want to configure.
- Turn on High Dynamic Range if the option is available. To disable HDR for that display, return to the same setting and turn it off.
Apple says this control is available for third-party displays that support HDR10, but it is not shown for every Mac and display combination. If you do not see it, work through the compatibility checks below rather than changing unrelated display presets.

Check the HDR compatibility chain
HDR depends on the whole signal path, not just the monitor’s advertised capability. Check the Mac model and macOS version, the monitor’s HDR support, the input you are using, the cable or adapter, and the selected resolution and refresh rate. Apple’s guide to using an external display with your Mac covers connection and display limitations; consult the monitor manual for model-specific requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm the monitor and input support HDR
Make sure the external display supports HDR10 and that HDR is enabled for the input receiving the Mac’s signal. Some TVs support HDR only on particular HDMI inputs. If the setting is missing, try an HDR-capable input and check the TV or monitor’s built-in menu: some non-Apple display options are available only through those controls.

Check the port, cable and adapter
Use a cable and connection route that support the signal you intend to send. A Mac without HDMI can connect from Thunderbolt using a USB-C adapter and HDMI cable, but that does not guarantee HDR at every resolution and refresh rate. Before buying an adapter or changing cables, verify the supported capabilities for the exact Mac, adapter, display input and signal combination. Apple’s external display connection guidance describes adapter options.
Review resolution and refresh rate
Try the display’s native resolution if HDR or the desired refresh rate is unavailable. Apple’s 2026 MacBook Air guidance warns that scaled resolutions higher than a display’s native resolution may affect HDR or refresh-rate availability. The precise outcome depends on the Mac and display configuration.

Do not confuse HDR playback with a reference preset
High Dynamic Range is the relevant macOS switch for HDR playback on a supported external display. A Preset or reference mode changes display characteristics for a particular workflow; it is not a substitute for enabling HDR playback.

If HDR video looks like SDR
Check battery video-streaming optimization
If Optimise video streaming while on battery is enabled, a Mac may play HDR video in SDR while running on battery. Connect the Mac to power or turn off that option to play HDR video. This behavior concerns video streaming on battery; it does not mean every HDR display or app is affected in the same way.
Account for configuration-specific limits
Apple notes resolution limits for some Intel Mac mini, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air configurations. The effect depends on the HDR content and display, so do not assume the same limitation applies to every Intel Mac. Check Apple’s external-display guidance alongside the monitor’s supported resolution and refresh-rate details.

Use the monitor manual for model-specific settings
Monitor menus may label controls differently, and some settings for third-party displays are not exposed in macOS. Use the manual for the exact model to find the HDR mode, HDR-capable input, cable requirements and supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations. There is no single universally best connection or HDR setting for every external monitor.
