Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most teenagers choosing a first Mac, start with the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5: it is the more portable of Apple’s two current Air sizes and has the lower starting price. Choose the 15-inch Air if a larger display matters more than easier carrying. Consider a MacBook Pro only when the student’s actual workload or required connections justify stepping up.
Is a MacBook Air enough for high school?
The Air is the sensible starting point for school use unless the student has a specific requirement that points elsewhere. Apple’s current MacBook Air lineup comes in 13-inch and 15-inch M5 models, with configurations listed from 16GB unified memory and 512GB storage. Those are product options, not proof of a minimum requirement for every student. Check the applications, files, and peripherals the teenager will actually use before selecting a configuration.

Apple advertises up to 18 hours of battery life for the Air. That is Apple’s claim, not a guaranteed school-day runtime; actual battery life varies with use, and no independent battery test is available here. The M5 Air includes a 12MP Center Stage camera, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and support for up to two external displays, according to Apple.

13-inch or 15-inch MacBook Air?
| Option | Best fit | U.S. starting price in Apple’s March 2026 announcement |
|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 | Prioritize portability and the lower entry price. | $1,099 standard; $999 education |
| 15-inch MacBook Air with M5 | Prioritize a larger built-in display for reading, writing, or working with multiple windows. | $1,299 standard; $1,199 education |
Apple announced these U.S. prices in March 2026; they are starting prices, not necessarily the price of a higher-memory or higher-storage configuration. Education pricing depends on eligibility. Check Apple’s current listing and applicable education terms before purchase because prices and availability can change. These figures are U.S.-only and should not be applied to other countries.

The practical trade-off is carrying comfort versus screen area. If the laptop will travel between home and school every day, the 13-inch model is the natural default. If the teen prefers more screen space and is comfortable carrying a larger laptop, the 15-inch model is the alternative. Neither size is a universal winner.
When does a teenager need a MacBook Pro?
Do not assume that a student needs a Pro just because it is the higher-tier MacBook. Apple’s current Pro specifications list model-dependent connections including HDMI, SDXC, and Thunderbolt. Those can be useful for a student whose classes or projects require particular displays, camera media, or other equipment. The right model depends on the exact Pro configuration and the ports it provides.

For ordinary schoolwork, the available specifications do not establish that a Pro is necessary. Check the school’s software and device requirements and the teen’s intended workload first; choose Pro only when those needs make its features relevant.
What to check before choosing a configuration
- School compatibility: Ask whether required apps, exams, or classroom systems have specific device or software requirements.
- Memory and storage: Match the configuration to the student’s actual applications and files. Apple’s current Air page lists 16GB to 32GB unified memory and 512GB to 4TB storage; the cited information does not establish a universal student minimum.
- Connections: List any required monitors, cameras, or other peripherals and confirm that the chosen model supports them. Air has two Thunderbolt 4 ports; Pro ports vary by model.
- Education price: Verify eligibility and the current regional price instead of assuming the announced U.S. education starting price applies.
- Support and repairs: Confirm the support or repair terms available where you live before buying.
What about MacBook Neo?
Apple’s education storefront also lists MacBook Neo, a lower-price Mac category, alongside Air and Pro. It may be worth comparing if keeping the initial cost down is the priority, but the available information does not establish which school workloads it suits best. Confirm its current specifications against the student’s school requirements rather than treating its lower category price as proof that it will meet a particular need.
