Which Low-Cost VPS Works for a 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Stream in India?

For one prerecorded 1080p30 YouTube stream, Amazon Lightsail’s $7/month Linux plan is the most defensible low-cost VPS starting point in the available figures. Its listed 2 TB of transfer gives more room than the $5/month plan’s 1 TB: a continuous 5 Mbps stream uses about 1.62 TB over 30 days before overhead or other traffic. This is a capacity-based recommendation, not a claim that the server has been benchmarked or that a particular region is reliable from India.

If you do not specifically need to operate a VPS, StreamNeo is the simpler cloud alternative: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video looping without a computer running at home. See StreamNeo.

Why Lightsail’s $7 plan fits this stream better than its $5 plan

For a single 1080p30 stream using YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate of 5 Mbps, transfer allowance is the key constraint visible in the available plan details. At that bitrate, 30 days of uninterrupted streaming sends about 1.62 TB in decimal units, calculated from bitrate multiplied by time. That total excludes protocol overhead, restarts, updates, and any other traffic.

Amazon Lightsail Linux plan Listed memory Listed SSD Listed transfer Fit for continuous 5 Mbps stream
$5/month 0.5 GB 20 GB 1 TB Too tight for the estimated 1.62 TB monthly stream volume, even before overhead.
$7/month 1 GB 40 GB 2 TB More defensible, but leaves only moderate transfer headroom before overhead and other traffic.

These prices and bundle allowances are listed on Amazon Web Services’ Lightsail pricing page, accessed in 2026. Check the current price, transfer definition, taxes, regional availability, and any applicable charges before purchasing; the figures here do not establish the full cost from India.

Estimate the transfer your chosen bitrate will use

Continuous outbound video transfer depends on bitrate and run time. Using the bitrates in YouTube’s current encoder guidance, the approximate 30-day totals below are calculations, not transfer figures published by YouTube. They use decimal units and exclude overhead and other traffic.

Video setting YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate Approximate transfer over 30 uninterrupted days
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 1.62 TB
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 0.97 TB

Use the bitrate you actually intend to send when estimating capacity. Leave room above the arithmetic estimate for network overhead, restarts, system updates, and any additional traffic. Do not treat a plan’s advertised allowance as guaranteed usable video transfer without checking the provider’s current terms.

What to check before choosing any VPS

Make sure the job is relaying, not transcoding

A compatible prerecorded file may be sent without re-encoding, which can demand substantially less CPU than transcoding in real time. Do not assume a small instance can transcode simply because it can host a streaming process. Confirm that your chosen software and media can run as intended on the instance, and test the exact workload before relying on it continuously.

Choose the output settings deliberately

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 3 Mbps for 720p30. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported video codecs, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends keyframes every two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not VPS hardware requirements.

  • Hard drives and memory upgrades included separately NOT installed, installation required.

YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats for different viewers and devices. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured source stream from the VPS.

Check the route from the region you can actually use

The available provider and YouTube guidance does not establish which VPS region has the best route to YouTube ingest from India. Nor does a low price, large transfer allowance, or listed plan specification guarantee uninterrupted service. Test stream health from the region you select rather than assuming that geographic proximity alone predicts a reliable route.

Compare the whole operating cost

StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison reports DigitalOcean at $4/month with 500 GiB of transfer and $12/month with 2,000 GiB. It reports Hetzner CX23 at €5.49/month in Germany and Finland after a June 2026 adjustment, excluding IPv4 and VAT. These are time-sensitive comparison figures, not independently verified current quotes; check each provider’s current pricing, regional availability, transfer terms, taxes, IPv4 charges, and overage costs before buying. The cited figures do not establish comparable India-to-YouTube routing or reliability results across providers.

Test and operate the stream instead of assuming it will stay live

  1. Confirm the file and workload. Test the actual prerecorded media and intended streaming software on the VPS. Establish whether the file can be sent without re-encoding; if you need real-time transcoding, verify CPU performance under that workload before committing to continuous use.
  2. Set a bitrate and calculate a monthly budget. Choose the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream, then estimate transfer from the corresponding bitrate and planned run time. Add headroom for overhead and non-stream traffic.
  3. Configure the encoder for YouTube ingest. Use RTMPS where supported, select a YouTube-supported video codec, use CBR, and set keyframes to the recommended two-second interval without exceeding four seconds. YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30.
  4. Test with representative content. Include the audio and motion characteristics of the recording you plan to loop. Check the resulting stream rather than judging it from a static or unusually simple test segment.
  5. Monitor stream health and prepare for process failure. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health. Configure the VPS process to restart if it stops, and watch for disconnects; neither a VPS plan nor an advertised transfer allowance guarantees a continuously live broadcast.

Common failure points and practical fixes

  • The stream stops when the monthly transfer runs out: Recalculate transfer from the actual bitrate and duration, then choose an allowance with headroom. A 1 TB allowance is not a comfortable fit for uninterrupted 1080p30 at 5 Mbps.
  • The server struggles during output: Check whether the workflow is transcoding instead of relaying compatible media. Re-encoding can require substantially more CPU; test the real workload rather than inferring capacity from storage or transfer figures.
  • YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health: Verify the encoder settings, test representative audio and motion, and monitor health messages during operation. If problems persist, test from the selected region and assess the route to YouTube ingest; no best India region is established by the cited information.
  • The streaming process exits and the broadcast ends: Configure process supervision or restart handling and monitor for repeated exits. Restart behavior helps recover from a stopped process but does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
  • The monthly bill is higher than the headline plan price: Recheck current taxes, transfer definitions, overages, region, and IPv4 charges. Some comparison figures explicitly exclude charges such as IPv4 and VAT.

Or let it run in the cloud

If managing a VPS is not the goal, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video as a 24/7 YouTube stream without leaving a computer on at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay powered on at home.
  • One flat price per slot covers uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; the free day is limited to one per account.
  • The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
