The short answer: choose release order for your first run
Kingdom Hearts is the correct starting point for almost every newcomer. The series is a connected narrative rather than a set of independent adventures, and later games assume that you know the conflicts and relationships introduced earlier. Square Enix’s official timeline specifically connects the first game’s separation of Sora, Riku and the King to Chain of Memories, then connects that story to Kingdom Hearts II after Sora’s year of sleep.
| Play approach | Best for | What you gain | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | A first playthrough | The intended escalation of mysteries, mechanics and emotional reveals | Some prequels explain events only after you have seen their consequences |
| Chronological order | A replay, lore study or story-first viewing | Events arranged by the fictional history | Starts with ancient backstory and can remove the context that original players had |
| First-game trial | Someone unsure about the series | A self-contained test of the tone and action before buying a larger collection | You will not yet understand every later reference |
The original Kingdom Hearts launched in March 2002. By the end of June 2025, Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million Kingdom Hearts units in global package shipments and digital sales across the series; that is a franchise-wide figure, not sales of the first game alone.

Why release order works better for newcomers
It preserves the series’ reveal structure
The prequels are written with knowledge of earlier games. Playing them first gives you information that the original audience did not have and can turn later revelations into setup you already understand. Release order lets you encounter the cast, terminology and unanswered questions in the sequence the games were designed to reveal them.
It makes the major transitions legible
Chain of Memories is the bridge between the first Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. Its central events explain why the next game begins with Sora absent from the action and why the opening situation differs so sharply from the first game. Skipping it does not make Kingdom Hearts II impossible, but it removes important story context.
It gives character relationships time to develop
Roxas, Axel and Xion are connected to the period covered by 358/2 Days. Their histories make more sense when encountered after the material that first establishes the organization and the consequences surrounding them. Likewise, Birth by Sleep carries more weight after you have seen the conflicts that its protagonists help explain.

1. Kingdom Hearts
This is the foundation: Sora’s journey, his connection to Riku and Kairi, the Disney worlds, the keyblade and the first major conflict. Select Final Mix when that edition is offered. You do not need to seek out an older regional release simply to begin; the current version available to you is normally the sensible choice.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

2. Chain of Memories
Play this immediately after the first game. It follows the separation of Sora, Riku and the King and supplies the context for the transition into the next numbered entry. Its card-based combat differs substantially from the first game, so approach it as a change of system rather than assuming that your first-game habits will transfer unchanged.
3. Kingdom Hearts II
Kingdom Hearts II begins after Sora’s year of sleep. The unusual opening is deliberate, and the preceding game explains why that sleep happened and what occurred while Sora was unavailable. Starting here without Chain of Memories is possible, but it leaves the opening’s emotional and narrative context thinner.

4. 358/2 Days
This entry concerns Roxas, Axel and Xion during 358 days. In release order it follows Kingdom Hearts II, allowing you to learn about these characters after the numbered game has established the relevant mysteries. Many collections present 358/2 Days as a story-focused viewing rather than a fully playable game; verify the format before you buy or plan your playtime.
5. Birth by Sleep
Birth by Sleep is a prequel set before the original Kingdom Hearts. Playing it here preserves the impact of seeing its earlier-era conflicts after you understand the world they eventually affect. It is also a substantial game, so do not mistake its chronological position for a reason to move it ahead of the first title on a first run.
6. Re:coded
Continue with Re:coded after Birth by Sleep. Its place in the release route is useful for maintaining the series’ staged flow, but collection versions may use a different presentation from a standard full-length game. Check the product description and the in-game menu so you know whether you are receiving an interactive version or a story presentation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
7. Dream Drop Distance
This is the next major playable step in the narrative and prepares the circumstances that lead toward the modern conflict. It assumes familiarity with the earlier numbered games and their prequels, so reaching it through the preceding entries produces a clearer payoff than treating it as a standalone adventure.

8. χ Back Cover and 0.2 Birth by Sleep
These are commonly encountered together in the material associated with HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, but they serve different purposes. χ Back Cover depicts ancient χ-era history, while 0.2 Birth by Sleep functions as a short lead-in to the events that follow. Watch or play each according to the order presented by your edition, and confirm which portions are interactive.
9. Kingdom Hearts III
Play the third numbered game only after the preceding route. It draws on conflicts and character arcs spread across the series, so the apparent size of its cast and the significance of its returns are much easier to follow when the earlier entries are fresh.
10. Re Mind
Re Mind is additional Kingdom Hearts III content, not a replacement for the base game. Finish Kingdom Hearts III first, then start Re Mind from the same installation or menu. Treat it as a continuation and clarification of the third game’s events.
11. Melody of Memory
End the current route with Melody of Memory. It revisits the series through a rhythm-game format while advancing the ongoing story. Because it assumes the preceding games, it works best as the final stop rather than as an introduction.

Should you move 358/2 Days before Kingdom Hearts II?
For a first playthrough, keep 358/2 Days after Kingdom Hearts II. That is the reveal-preserving release-order choice. The story presentation explains material that the series originally revealed later, and seeing it before Kingdom Hearts II can change how you interpret characters and events in the numbered game.
Some experienced fans choose to watch or play 358/2 Days before Kingdom Hearts II on a replay. That is a valid preference when the goal is to arrange the fictional events more tightly, but it is not a universally superior chronology. The official timeline identifies 358/2 Days as the period involving Roxas, Axel and Xion and places Kingdom Hearts II after Sora’s year of sleep; the overlap is exactly why a strict one-line order can be misleading.
What chronological order looks like
Chronological order means the order in which events occur inside the fictional history, not the order in which players received the games. It begins with ancient χ-era material and Birth by Sleep, both well before the original Kingdom Hearts. A practical story chronology is:
| Story position | Entry | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | χ Back Cover | Ancient χ-era backstory; commonly presented as a film rather than a conventional standalone game |
| 2 | Birth by Sleep | Set before the original Kingdom Hearts |
| 3 | Kingdom Hearts | The first released game and the narrative foundation |
| 4 | Chain of Memories | Follows the separation of Sora, Riku and the King |
| 5 | 358/2 Days | Overlaps the period leading into Kingdom Hearts II; a perfectly linear placement is artificial |
| 6 | Kingdom Hearts II | Begins after Sora’s year of sleep |
| 7 | Re:coded | Check whether your edition supplies a playable title or a story presentation |
| 8 | Dream Drop Distance | Moves the ongoing conflict toward the third numbered game |
| 9 | 0.2 Birth by Sleep | A near-term lead-in to Kingdom Hearts III, unlike the ancient setting of χ Back Cover |
| 10 | Kingdom Hearts III | Uses story context accumulated across the preceding entries |
| 11 | Re Mind | Additional content attached to Kingdom Hearts III |
| 12 | Melody of Memory | Follows the third game and its additional content |
This route is useful when you are replaying the saga, cataloguing its lore or deliberately choosing fictional chronology over reveal order. It is less forgiving for a newcomer because the earliest material assumes that you will eventually recognize concepts introduced in later-released games. It also includes story films, legacy entries and mobile-era material whose availability varies by platform.
Which edition should you buy in 2026?
Square Enix’s October 8, 2026 announcement identifies Kingdom Hearts Collection [I–III] as a download bundle containing HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III with Re Mind. The announcement lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It also lists HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX for the original Nintendo Switch.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Kingdom Hearts Collection [I–III] is listed | Your regional store, language options and exact bundle contents |
| Xbox Series X|S | The collection is listed | Console generation, territory and whether every listed component is included in your edition |
| Xbox on PC | The collection is listed | Windows requirements, account requirements and regional availability |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | The collection is listed | Whether your store listing is the complete bundle or a separate edition |
| Original Nintendo Switch | HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX is listed separately | Whether the listing is the current edition you want and how its included entries are delivered |
| Steam | The announcement says the version was already available as Integrum Masterpiece | Current regional price, package contents and any edition differences |
| Epic Games Store | The announcement gave October 9, 2026 as the expected availability date | Current storefront status, because release dates and regional listings can change |
The announcement describes the combined collection as a download product. It does not establish a physical edition, so do not assume that a boxed copy exists or that a retailer listing contains the same contents. Compare the platform, region, language, delivery method and included entries before paying.
Square Enix’s January 2022 announcement described Nintendo Switch versions available at that time as cloud versions requiring a stable, persistent high-speed internet connection. That is historical context, not a technical specification for the 2026 collection. Check the current store page for the exact delivery method of the version you are considering.
Playable game or story presentation? Check before you plan
A collection can contain the series’ story without making every chapter playable in the same way. In particular, 358/2 Days and Re:coded may appear in a different presentation format from the fully playable games. The official pages reviewed do not establish one universal format for every platform and edition.
- Read the individual item list, not just the collection name.
- Look for wording such as “game,” “movie,” “cinematics” or “story content.”
- Check the platform-specific store description because the same collection label can have different delivery details.
- Confirm whether Re Mind is included with Kingdom Hearts III or sold separately in the edition shown.
- Allow for the possibility that a story presentation preserves narrative context but does not provide the original gameplay.
A simple decision framework
If you have never played the series
Choose Kingdom Hearts in Final Mix form if available, then continue in release order. Do not buy a collection solely because its title suggests that every listed chapter is a full game; inspect the contents first.
If you have played the first game and stopped
Resume with Chain of Memories before Kingdom Hearts II. Its bridge role is the missing context most likely to make the next opening feel confusing.
If you care most about lore
Use the chronological table for a second run. Begin with the ancient χ-era material, then move through the prequel period and the later games, while accepting that overlapping stories such as 358/2 Days cannot be placed perfectly on a single straight line.
If you only want to test the series
Buy or access the first game alone if your platform permits it. That answers whether the action, Disney-world structure and tone appeal to you without committing to the entire saga. If it works for you, add the entries in sequence rather than jumping directly to the newest numbered title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon mistakes and how to avoid them
- Starting with Birth by Sleep because it is a prequel. Its earlier setting does not make it the best introduction; use it after the original trilogy’s initial arc on a first run.
- Skipping Chain of Memories. If the card system is not appealing, use an authorized story presentation where available, but do not assume the chapter is irrelevant.
- Treating chronology as a definitive order. Overlapping events and later-made prequels mean that chronology and reveal order answer different questions.
- Assuming every collection item is playable. Verify the format of 358/2 Days, Re:coded and other story components on your exact platform.
- Assuming a physical copy is confirmed. The October 8, 2026 bundle announcement describes a download product; a physical listing would need separate confirmation.
- Ignoring region and edition differences. Storefront language, included content, delivery method and availability can differ by territory and platform.
- Using old cloud-version advice for a new edition. The 2022 Switch description is historical and should not be applied automatically to the 2026 products.
Bottom line
For a first playthrough, start with Kingdom Hearts—preferably Final Mix—and follow release order through Melody of Memory. Play chronological order later when you want the fictional history arranged from its ancient beginnings. Before purchasing a collection, confirm your platform, region, download or physical format, and whether each chapter is playable or presented as a story film.
