Start with the controls that affect reading comfort: set brightness and warmth for the room, tune text in the in-book Aa menu, then decide whether Dark Mode and battery-saving options fit your habits. Menu names differ by Paperwhite generation, so confirm your model before following a precise path.
The best first-settings order
| Priority | Setting | Where to find it | What it changes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brightness and warmth | Quick Actions, or Settings → Screen and brightness; while reading, tap the top of the screen | Front-light intensity and, on compatible models, color warmth | Use a level comfortable for the current room; there is no universally correct number. |
| 2 | Font size and boldness | Open a book → tap the top → Aa | Character size and stroke weight | Pinch in or out to change size on supported models. |
| 3 | Spacing and margins | Aa → Layout | Line, paragraph, word and character spacing; page margins | Available controls vary by device and book format. |
| 4 | Background appearance | Settings → Screen and brightness → Appearance or Color Style, or Quick Actions | Light page, Dark Mode and, on some models, page-color choices | Some PDFs can be difficult to read with Dark Mode or Page Color enabled. |
| 5 | Internet, Power saver and sleep | Quick Actions; Settings → Device options → Power saver; press the power button briefly to sleep | Connectivity and background power use | Downloads, updates and indexing can temporarily increase drain. |
| 6 | Sync | Use the Kindle’s Sync command while connected | Downloads pending items, notes, highlights, updates and reading position | Reconnect before syncing if you have been reading offline. |
1. Set brightness and warmth for the room
Open the light controls
From the Home screen, swipe down to open Quick Actions. You can also open Settings and choose Screen and brightness. When a book is open, tap the top of the display to reveal the reading toolbar and reach the same light controls. Amazon describes brightness as a scale or as plus and minus buttons, depending on the device software.

Choose comfort instead of a preset number
Raise the front light only until the page is easy to read without looking self-luminous. In a bright room you may need more intensity; in a dark room, a lower level is usually less tiring. Change it when your surroundings change rather than treating one value as a permanent ideal.

A warmer, more amber tone can feel preferable in the evening, while a cooler tone may look more natural in daylight. The available range and exact label depend on the generation.
#1 Best Overall
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Brightness and warmth are independent of the book’s font settings. If letters still look faint after adjusting the light, continue to the Aa menu instead of simply increasing brightness.
2. Make the text legible with Aa
Change font size first
Open any adjustable book, tap the top of the screen, and tap Aa. Increase or decrease Font size until you can read at your normal distance without leaning toward the display. On supported Paperwhite models, you can also pinch in or out on the page while reading.
A larger size is not a failure of the device or your eyesight; it changes how much text appears on each page. Expect more page turns when the type is larger. A smaller size shows more words but can make long sessions uncomfortable if you are squinting.

Use boldness for weak or thin strokes
The Boldness control adds weight to letter strokes without changing their height. Increase it when a typeface looks pale, especially at low light levels, and reduce it if characters begin to close up or paragraphs look dense. Adjust size and boldness together because a heavy setting can make a large font feel crowded.

Amazon Customer Service explains that Kindle text rendering also “applies kerning, refines layout for large fonts, and automatically improves line spacing for faster, easier reading across all fonts.” That processing is automatic; the manual controls are for your own visual preference.
3. Tune spacing, margins and alignment
Use the Layout tab
In the book’s Aa panel, open Layout. Depending on the model and title, you can change line spacing, paragraph spacing, word spacing, character spacing and page margins. The same area may include orientation and text alignment.
- Line spacing: Increase it when lines run together; reduce it when a page feels too loose.
- Paragraph spacing: Add separation when you lose the start of a new paragraph, or reduce it for a denser novel-like page.
- Margins: Narrow margins put more words across the screen; wider margins can make tracking easier.
- Word and character spacing: Small changes can help readers who find a particular typeface cramped or uneven.
- Orientation and alignment: Use landscape or a different alignment only when it improves a specific book or reading posture.
Amazon notes that display settings vary by model. If one of these controls is absent, do not assume the Kindle is malfunctioning; the generation or the title may not expose it.

Where to switch appearance
On current software, Dark Mode is generally under Settings → Screen and brightness → Appearance or Color Style. Some models also put a Dark Mode button in Quick Actions. The label and location can differ between generations, so use the option that appears on your device.

Treat it as a preference, not a rule
Dark Mode reverses the usual page presentation. Some readers prefer light text on a dark background at night; others find the contrast less comfortable or the characters less crisp. Try it during an ordinary reading session and keep whichever presentation lets you read without straining.
Check the format before using it for a document-heavy title. Amazon warns that some PDFs may be difficult to read when Dark Mode or Page Color is enabled. If diagrams, scanned pages or charts look wrong, return to the normal page appearance for that book.
5. Adjust battery-related settings without losing useful features
Reduce light only as far as comfort allows
The built-in light is a significant user-controlled power demand, so lowering it when the room is already bright can reduce unnecessary consumption. Do not trade away legibility: a page that forces you to reread or squint is not an efficient setting.

Turn off internet when you do not need it
Disable wireless connectivity when you are reading downloaded books and do not need a download, update or synchronization. Turn it back on before fetching a title, sending notes or highlights, or syncing your furthest page. Leaving wireless off means pending items remain pending until the next connection.

Try Power saver
Open Settings → Device options → Power saver and enable it if your priority is reducing standby activity. The exact behavior and availability can vary by model and software. Power saver is a battery preference, not a replacement for sleeping the device when you finish.
Put the Paperwhite to sleep
Press the power button briefly when you are done reading. A short press puts the Kindle to sleep; it does not erase your place or close the book. Avoid holding the button unless you intend to restart or shut down the device.
Expect extra drain after setup or large changes
Amazon advises keeping a new or recently set-up Kindle charging while it downloads books and updates. Large downloads and indexing can temporarily use more battery than ordinary reading. That short-term behavior is not a reliable indication of the device’s normal reading endurance.
6. Keep Sync available when you need your library and reading position
With internet enabled, run the Kindle’s Sync command after downloading or reading on another device. Amazon says Sync downloads pending books, notes and highlights, and updates the backed-up furthest page read. If you have been offline, reconnect first; otherwise the Kindle cannot retrieve pending items or upload your latest position.

For a mostly offline routine, you can leave wireless disabled between sync sessions. Before traveling or switching devices, connect once and sync so the newest page position and annotations are available elsewhere.
Check the book format before troubleshooting Aa controls
Reflowable books
Reflowable ebooks adapt to your selected font and layout. Their text can move to new lines and pages when you change size, boldness, spacing or margins, which is why the Aa controls work as expected in most standard novels.
Fixed-layout books
Fixed-layout titles preserve a designed page. Amazon identifies print replicas, manga, comics and some children’s books or textbooks as examples. Their text may not reflow, so changing font size or margins can have little or no effect. Use the book’s own zoom or navigation tools when available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a control is missing or ineffective
- Open another standard, reflowable book and test the Aa menu.
- If the control works there, the original title is probably fixed-layout or otherwise restricted.
- If it is missing everywhere, confirm the Paperwhite generation and check for a software update through the device’s settings.
- Recheck the display path after an update because Amazon can use different labels on different generations.
Confirm which Paperwhite you own before following a menu path
Amazon’s guide index lists the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) as the 2024 release and also lists several older Paperwhite generations. Exact labels, placement and availability of display controls differ among them. Identify the generation in your device information or the original product documentation before assuming a path from another model applies.
The 2024 standard Paperwhite uses USB-C charging. The 2024 Signature Edition supports Qi-certified wireless charging. Those charging differences do not change the reading-settings procedure, and you do not need a special charging accessory to adjust brightness, text or layout.
A five-minute setup sequence
- From Home, open Quick Actions and set brightness for the room; open Screen and brightness if you also want to adjust warmth.
- Open a typical reflowable book, tap the top, choose Aa, and set font size and boldness.
- Open Aa → Layout and make small spacing and margin changes until paragraphs are easy to track.
- Try Dark Mode or another appearance in Screen and brightness, then test a page with the kind of books you actually read. Revert it for PDFs that become hard to interpret.
- If battery life matters more than continuous connectivity, enable Power saver, turn off internet between sync sessions, and briefly press the power button when finished.
- Reconnect and use Sync after downloads, updates, annotation work or reading on another device.
What to change later
After the first session, revisit settings only when your use case changes: a darker room calls for a different light level, a technical book may need wider spacing, and a fixed-layout comic may require its own zoom behavior. Keeping a stable baseline makes it easier to identify whether a problem comes from the device, the book format or the environment.
The Bottom Line
For most Paperwhite owners, the right starting point is room-matched brightness and warmth, followed by Aa adjustments for size, boldness, spacing and margins. Treat Dark Mode as optional, and use wireless, Power saver and Sync according to whether battery conservation or immediate downloads and backups matter more.
