Which Jev Security Settings Should Teams Change Before Deployment?

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before exposing Jev to production users, switch policy evaluation to enforcing mode, keep policy and credentials out of repositories and untrusted project files, require HTTPS to approved endpoints, set bounded timeouts and explicit confidence thresholds, and make privileged actions fail closed. Minimize state, redact headers and request data in logs, and put hosted installations behind an authenticated proxy with exact origin controls.

The documented values are starting points, not universal safety guarantees. Review them against the consequences of each action, your provider’s current guidance, and the way your deployment handles tenants, previews, retries, and operator access.

Change these controls before production

Use this as a release gate. The “production setting” column describes the security posture to establish; the final value still belongs in your change review.

Control Production setting Why it matters
Policy mode mode: "enforcing" Jev blocks or pauses calls that violate policy instead of merely recording what would have happened.
Policy ownership Store sensitive policy in the user or server configuration at ~/.jevguard/.jevguard.json; trust project configuration only deliberately. A cloned repository or an agent operating in a project cannot silently weaken the guard.
Provider key TYPESAFE_API_KEY in a secret manager or server-only environment. Prevents source control, browser bundles, images, forks, and client-side telemetry from becoming credential stores.
Transport HTTPS, approved TypeSafe endpoint, and no direct exposure of the application process. Protects credentials and policy traffic and narrows where requests may go.
Timeout A positive value; the documented JEV_MCP_TIMEOUT_MS=30000 is a review baseline. Prevents an unavailable provider from leaving a call waiting indefinitely or falling through to an unsafe default.
Injection confidence Validate the relationship among auto_accept=0.8, review_at=0.5, and block_at=0.75; tighten with environment floors where needed. Creates explicit points for automatic acceptance, human review, and blocking.
Failure behavior Deny or require human review for privileged actions when Jev times out, the provider fails, or retries are exhausted. A transient dependency failure must not become an automatic approval.
State and logs Keep state minimal; exclude secrets, card data, cookies, and other tenants’ tickets; redact request bodies and key headers. Limits what an injection, debugging tool, or log reader can disclose.
Hosted access Use an authenticated proxy, exact origin restrictions, and rate controls; do not treat a shared access code as tenant isolation. Separates operator convenience from real authentication and authorization.

Use enforcing mode after a controlled audit

What audit mode is for

Jev-guard documents audit as a trial mode. It logs calls that would have been blocked but does not interrupt them. That is useful while you discover false positives, missing allow rules, and workflows that need a human decision.

When to switch

Run audit only during a defined rollout with representative traffic and an owner who reviews the events. Before real users can trigger consequential actions, change the policy to mode: "enforcing". Enforcing mode is the documented production default. Verify the deployed configuration, not just the file in your workstation, because preview and production environments can have different variables.

Test the transition

  1. Exercise normal, denied, and ambiguous requests in audit mode.
  2. Record each event that would block, then decide whether to change the request, policy, or review path.
  3. Deploy enforcing mode to a protected canary.
  4. Confirm that a violation stops or pauses the call and that an operator can see why.
  5. Remove the audit-only exception before widening traffic.

Keep policy outside code and project files

Jev-guard stores policy in ~/.jevguard/.jevguard.json. Project configuration is ignored for sensitive policy unless it has been explicitly trusted, and the built-in sensitive-file protections cannot be removed. This separation matters when a repository is cloned, a pull request is opened from an unknown fork, or an agent is allowed to edit project files: those inputs should not be able to rewrite the security boundary.

Deployment practice

  • Provision the user or service-account configuration during deployment rather than committing it beside application code.
  • Restrict write access to the policy file and review changes as code.
  • Do not copy a developer’s home-directory policy into a container image without checking ownership and permissions.
  • Keep untrusted repository instructions, generated files, and ticket text separate from the policy source.

If a team intentionally permits project-level policy, document who can change it, how changes are reviewed, and which protections remain non-overridable.

Protect the TypeSafe API key

Where it belongs

Supply TYPESAFE_API_KEY through a secret manager or a server-only environment. The application process should read it at runtime. Do not commit it, put it in a container image layer, expose it through browser-prefixed variables, print it in startup diagnostics, or pass it to an untrusted fork.

Rotation and retirement

Give each deployment or environment a key with the narrowest practical scope. When a deployment is retired, revoke its provider key; when ownership or exposure is uncertain, rotate it rather than relying on a log search. Check proxy, tracing, crash-reporting, and build logs because a header can leak outside application source.

Client-side warning

A browser or desktop client is not a secret boundary. If users must initiate Jev checks, send the request to your server and let that server call the provider. A “hidden” JavaScript variable, bundled configuration file, or mobile-app constant can be extracted by anyone who receives the software.

Lock transport, endpoints, and reverse proxies

Use approved HTTPS destinations

Use HTTPS and the approved TypeSafe endpoint. jev-mcp rejects unsafe public hosts and non-public addresses. A custom public HTTPS host requires explicit opt-in, so treat that exception as a reviewed change rather than a convenience setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reverse-proxy requirements

For a hosted service, expose only the reverse proxy to the internet. Terminate TLS at the proxy, preserve the original Host header, and configure the exact public origin that users will access. Do not allow the backend to infer an origin from arbitrary forwarded headers.

  1. Set the canonical HTTPS origin, including the correct scheme and host.
  2. Forward only the headers your application needs; overwrite client-supplied host and forwarding values.
  3. Keep the Jev process on a private network address.
  4. Allow inbound traffic to the process only from the proxy.
  5. Test an unexpected origin, a plain-HTTP request, and a direct backend request; each should be rejected or unreachable.

Bound timeouts and confidence thresholds

Timeouts

jev-mcp requires a positive timeout and documents JEV_MCP_TIMEOUT_MS=30000 as its default. Thirty seconds is a configuration default, not a promise that every request will complete in that time. Set a value compatible with your user-facing deadline, queue behavior, and retry policy. A retry budget must fit inside the overall deadline; otherwise callers can wait longer than intended while still receiving an unclear result.

Confidence settings

The documented injection-screening starting values are auto_accept=0.8, review_at=0.5, and block_at=0.75. Environment floors can tighten caller-supplied settings, while invalid relationships are configuration errors. Treat these numbers as baselines to validate with your own risk review. A workflow that changes a profile, issues a refund, bans an account, or deploys credentials should normally require a higher bar than a read-only classification.

Validate before serving traffic

  • Start the service with the intended environment and confirm the effective values in a non-secret configuration report.
  • Test values below, between, and above each threshold.
  • Test an invalid threshold relationship and confirm startup fails rather than silently normalizing it.
  • Verify that an environment floor cannot be lowered by a project or request.

Fail closed for privileged actions

For credential changes, production deployments, refunds, bans, permission changes, and other irreversible operations, a timeout, provider failure, or exhausted retry sequence should produce a denial or human review. It should not auto-allow because the screening service is unavailable. jev-guard describes its behavior as asking instead of allowing when the API is unreachable; the independent Jev security guidance likewise specifies “Timeouts and 529 → deny/review on privileged actions.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate action classes

Action class Recommended failure result Operational note
Read-only lookup Possibly retry or return an explicit unavailable response. Do not convert an error into an affirmative approval.
Reversible low-impact change Review or deny when the policy check cannot complete. Show the operator the pending state and the reason.
Irreversible or privileged action Deny or require human approval. Record an audit event without storing sensitive payloads.

Make the result explicit in the calling code: allow, deny, review, and unavailable should not collapse into one Boolean.

Treat state and incoming text as untrusted

The vendor capability note for jev-1.13 says state is not treated as hostile by default. That means your application must supply the boundary. Keep instructions and evaluation criteria aligned, test prompt-injection cases, and do not mix one tenant’s ticket text with another tenant’s policy or conversation state.

State rules

  • Pass only the fields required for the current decision.
  • Keep policy instructions separate from user-provided text and label trust boundaries in the request model.
  • Clear state when a session, tenant, or authorization context changes.
  • Include adversarial tests such as “ignore previous instructions,” embedded tool commands, and hostile content copied from tickets or documents.

“Least state” is a security control: less retained context means fewer opportunities for cross-tenant disclosure and fewer instructions for an attacker to manipulate.

Minimize and redact logs

Do not place secrets, payment-card numbers, session cookies, or another tenant’s tickets in Jev state. In proxies and observability systems, redact request bodies and the X-Jev-Jev-Key and X-Jev-Openai-Key headers. Apply the same rule to access logs, traces, error reports, queue payloads, and support exports.

Useful audit records

Keep the decision ID, policy version, action class, result, threshold configuration version, and timestamps where they help reconstruction. Store a hash or stable reference instead of raw user content when possible. Define retention and deletion rules, and restrict who can query the records.

Secure hosted Jev State installations

Operator keys and BYOK

Jev State’s hosted guidance uses STUDIO_ACCESS_TOKEN for operator-supplied keys and distinguishes bring-your-own-key (BYOK) mode. Decide which model you are using before deployment, then ensure the selected token is injected server-side and never rendered into client HTML or browser storage.

Origin and access controls

Configure the service to reject cross-origin requests when that is your intended posture. The shared access code is shared by an installation’s users; it is not an account system, role model, or tenant boundary. For a broader audience, put the service behind an authenticated proxy and add rate controls, per-user authorization, and tenant-aware data separation.

Instance limits

Jev State documents best-effort per-instance limits of 15 verifications and 60 live requests per minute per IP. These are capacity protections, not identity or abuse-prevention guarantees. If clients can share an IP, expect the limit to affect them collectively; if many users sit behind one proxy, add controls based on authenticated identity as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck settings after every deployment change

Environment changes affect new deployments. Preview deployments need their own variables and their own protection decisions; do not assume a preview inherits production’s secret handling or origin policy.

  1. Compare the effective policy, mode, endpoint, timeout, thresholds, and failure mapping with the approved release record.
  2. Confirm that preview and production secrets are different and that previews cannot call production systems unintentionally.
  3. Verify proxy origin, TLS, host preservation, authentication, and rate controls.
  4. Run timeout, provider-error, retry-exhaustion, injection, cross-origin, and direct-backend tests.
  5. Remove obsolete deployments, revoke their provider keys, and delete stale environment variables.

Common deployment failures and fixes

“It works locally but policy is ignored in production”

Check whether the production process can read the intended user-level policy and whether a project file is being trusted unexpectedly. Print only non-secret effective settings, then correct the service account’s home directory or deployment mount.

“A timeout allowed the action”

Find the caller’s timeout and error mapping. Ensure unavailable, timeout, and retry-exhausted results reach the deny/review branch for privileged actions instead of a generic success fallback.

“A custom endpoint is rejected”

Confirm that it is public HTTPS, explicitly approved, and reachable through the configured proxy. Private or ambiguous addresses are rejected by design; do not bypass that check by exposing the backend directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Logs contain credentials or ticket text”

Redact the named Jev headers and request bodies at the proxy and application logger, then rotate any key that may already have been captured. Remove sensitive payloads from traces and retained debugging exports.

“A shared access code is being used as tenant security”

Replace that assumption with authenticated proxy controls, authorization checks, per-tenant state isolation, and rate limits. The shared code alone does not provide roles or tenant separation.

Release checklist

  • Enforcing mode is active before real-user exposure.
  • Sensitive policy is outside repositories and untrusted project files.
  • TYPESAFE_API_KEY is server-only, rotated per environment, and absent from images and logs.
  • HTTPS, approved endpoints, exact origins, host preservation, and proxy-only exposure are verified.
  • Timeout and confidence relationships are valid and reviewed for each action class.
  • Privileged actions deny or pause for human review on timeout, provider failure, and exhausted retries.
  • State excludes secrets and cross-tenant content; injection tests pass.
  • Jev headers and request bodies are redacted in every observability path.
  • Hosted access uses real authentication and authorization rather than a shared code alone.
  • Preview variables, obsolete deployments, and old provider keys have been reviewed.
