It depends on what “multiple projects” means. VS Code is the more direct choice for combining several project folders in one multi-root workspace. IntelliJ IDEA fits components that belong together as modules in one project, and it can also manage distinct projects in one frame with its Multi-Project Workspace plugin. If you prefer independent windows, IntelliJ IDEA supports that too. The available documentation establishes these workflow differences, not a universal winner for speed or resource use.
First decide what you mean by “multiple projects”
The phrase can describe two different setups:
- Several folders in one shared editing context: You want a single Explorer or project frame, shared searching, and perhaps some common settings.
- Several independent projects open at once: You want to move between repositories or codebases, either in one frame or in separate windows.
These are not interchangeable needs. VS Code’s multi-root workspace explicitly brings folders together. IntelliJ IDEA offers a project-and-module structure for related code, a plugin for multiple distinct projects in one frame, and a separate-window option.
How VS Code handles multiple folders
VS Code multi-root workspaces let you work with multiple project folders at once—for example, product source alongside its documentation. Add a folder using File > Add Folder to Workspace. Each folder appears as a root in Explorer, and search can be scoped to an individual root. See the VS Code multi-root workspace documentation.
Settings across roots
A multi-root workspace can combine folder-level resource settings with workspace-wide settings saved in a .code-workspace file. This lets folders have their own resource settings while sharing a common editing context. It does not make every setting independent per folder: settings affecting the editor as a whole, such as UI layout, are not separately applied to each root.

How IntelliJ IDEA organizes related code
IntelliJ IDEA treats a project as the top-level container for source code, tests, libraries, SDKs, build instructions, and settings. A project can contain one or more modules, with shared project configuration such as SDKs, code style, and inspections. If several components are parts of one application and share configuration, modeling them as modules in one project may fit better than treating each as an unrelated project. Can IntelliJ IDEA show distinct projects in one frame?
Yes, with JetBrains’ Multi-Project Workspace plugin. JetBrains describes it for workflows involving multiple projects, such as multiple Git repositories, microservices, or a monorepo. It can expose repositories and build controls, and lets you unload projects you are not currently using. The workspace does not change the original projects’ configuration or locations. You must install and enable the plugin to use this feature; see the IntelliJ IDEA workspace documentation.

When separate project windows are preferable
If you want projects to remain independent rather than share one frame, IntelliJ IDEA lets you choose how a newly opened project behaves: open it in a new window, replace the current project, or prompt you. You can also reopen multiple projects at startup and switch between their windows. The available behavior is documented under opening, moving, and closing projects.
