The safest process is to identify your platform and app version, read the current in-app help or IPVanish support instructions, and then verify the resulting behavior. Do not assume that a setting seen on Android, Windows, macOS, or another platform has the same name, default, or interaction elsewhere.

Change settings in this order
Privacy settings are most useful when they address the failure you are trying to prevent. A kill switch limits exposure during a tunnel interruption. Operating-system controls can add another enforcement layer on supported mobile devices. Split tunneling deliberately removes selected traffic from VPN protection. A RAM-only filter changes which servers you can select, but it does not determine whether your device stops sending traffic when the tunnel fails.

1. Enable and verify the kill switch
A kill switch is the first setting to examine if your concern is accidental exposure. When the encrypted tunnel drops, the feature is intended to prevent ordinary internet traffic from continuing outside it. A 2026 Tom’s Guide review reports a kill switch across IPVanish’s major platforms, but describes different setup details and behavior. The review also says Android protection may require device-level configuration. Those are secondary-review findings, so use the current IPVanish support instructions for the exact control on your device.
A safe configuration workflow
- Identify the device and app version. Record whether you are using Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, or another supported platform. Feature names and defaults can change with an app update.
- Open the IPVanish settings area. Look for a privacy, connection, or security section and read the kill-switch description rather than relying on a familiar label. The published evidence does not verify one universal click path.
- Turn on the app-level kill switch where it is offered. If the description says that internet access is blocked during a VPN interruption, that is the behavior you want for an exposure-avoidance policy. If the description only blocks selected traffic, note that scope.
- Check the operating system separately on mobile. On Android, review the system’s VPN settings for an always-on VPN option and a control that blocks connections without a VPN. Enable them only after confirming how IPVanish tells its app and the operating system to work together. Do not assume that an app toggle automatically enables the system controls.
- Perform a controlled interruption test. Connect to the VPN, start a non-sensitive web request, and deliberately disconnect the VPN. Confirm whether traffic stops rather than silently continuing. Reconnect before using banking, work, or other sensitive services. This is a behavior check, not evidence that every type of leak is impossible.
What to expect when it works
A functioning kill switch can make the internet appear unavailable when the VPN server or local connection changes. That inconvenience is intentional: it favors no connection over an unprotected connection. If you need uninterrupted access for a particular application, do not immediately disable the kill switch; first determine whether split tunneling is the more appropriate exception and understand the protection you give up.
Platform-specific cautions
The Tom’s Guide review reports an interaction between split tunneling and the macOS kill switch. Before combining those features, read the current macOS documentation and test the exact app version. A setting combination that appears sensible in a general guide may allow excluded traffic to continue or may change what the kill switch blocks.

2. Treat split tunneling as an intentional exception
Split tunneling decides which traffic uses the VPN and which traffic uses your normal connection. It can solve compatibility or local-network problems, but it also creates a boundary that is easy to forget. An application excluded from the tunnel does not receive the VPN’s tunnel protection, regardless of whether the VPN is connected for other applications.
Decide what belongs outside the tunnel
- Local-device and printer tools: You might exclude them when they cannot reach devices on your home network through the VPN.
- Services that require your ordinary region or network: Excluding them exposes their connections to your internet service provider, local network, and the service’s usual connection metadata.
- Sensitive browsing or work applications: Keep them inside the tunnel unless you have a documented reason to bypass it.
Use the app’s current split-tunneling description to determine whether it works by excluding applications, including applications, or routing selected destinations. Those models produce different results. The reviewed sources do not establish identical controls or defaults on every operating system.
Recheck the kill-switch interaction
After changing split tunneling, repeat the controlled interruption test for both an included application and an excluded one. On macOS, specifically verify whether the current build preserves the behavior you expect when the kill switch and split tunneling are enabled together. If the documentation is unclear, choose the simpler configuration instead of assuming that all traffic will be blocked.

3. Consider the RAM-only server filter, but do not confuse it with a privacy guarantee
TechRadar reported on April 21, 2026 that IPVanish introduced a RAM-only server filter across its supported apps. The filter can help you select servers that meet that infrastructure description when the feature is present. “RAM-only” refers to how server storage is used; it is not a universal privacy switch.
Choosing a RAM-only server does not replace the kill switch, operating-system blocking controls, or any leak-protection setting. The available reporting does not establish that it prevents malware, phishing, account tracking, or every form of data retention. Check the server-selection screen after updating the app. If the filter is missing, the feature may not be available on that platform, account, or version; consult current IPVanish support instead of assuming that a similarly named server is RAM-only.
4. Understand what the no-logs statement does and does not say
In an April 10, 2025 announcement distributed through Business Wire and Nasdaq, IPVanish said that Schellman independently audited its no-logs policy. The announcement says the audit found no logging of internet activity, traffic metadata, DNS queries, or accessed services. It also distinguishes those records from account information, such as an email address and payment details, that the provider retains.

That distinction matters when you choose settings. A kill switch controls what happens to network traffic during a disconnect; it does not erase account records. A RAM-only server filter concerns server infrastructure; it does not mean that no information of any kind is retained. The announcement is the company’s account of the audit, not the complete auditor’s report, so do not expand the claim beyond the categories and wording it describes.

A VPN protects the internet connection and privacy functions it is designed to provide. It does not automatically recognize a fake login page or prevent a malicious file from being downloaded. In an October 8, 2026 TechRadar report about IPVanish’s broader security expansion, Subbu Sthanu, the company’s General Manager of Consumer Cybersecurity, said: “It protects your Internet connections and your privacy, but does not shield you from malicious downloads, fake login pages, and other threats.”
The same report describes antivirus integrated into Windows and macOS desktop clients. Treat that as a separate endpoint-security layer, not as a hidden effect of the VPN kill switch or server filter. Continue to use operating-system updates, browser warnings, reputable malware defenses, strong authentication, and careful link handling. Do not conclude that an active VPN makes an untrusted download or login form safe.

6. Check platform differences before changing other controls
The evidence does not verify current universal paths, defaults, or feature parity for DNS leak protection, trusted networks, protocol choices, or split tunneling. Those settings may be useful, but changing them from a generic guide can create a false sense of protection or break connectivity. Use the current in-app help or IPVanish support center for your exact platform and version.

Troubleshoot the most common outcomes
The internet stops after a disconnect
This usually indicates that the kill switch or an operating-system block is enforcing the no-unprotected-traffic policy. Reconnect the VPN, or turn the control off temporarily only if you deliberately accept ordinary connectivity. If the block persists after a normal VPN connection, update the app, restart it, and follow the platform-specific recovery instructions rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
One application still uses the ordinary connection
Review split-tunneling entries and confirm whether the rule is defined as an exclusion or inclusion. Remove the exception if the application should use the VPN, then repeat the interruption test. Remember that an excluded application remains outside tunnel protection even while another application is protected.

Check the current app version and platform help. The feature may be labeled differently, placed under connection settings, or implemented through an operating-system control. Do not infer that a missing toggle means the app has no protection, and do not claim that it exists on a platform without current documentation.
The RAM-only option is missing
Availability may depend on the supported app, release, or server list. Update through your normal software channel, reopen the server selector, and consult current IPVanish support. Never treat an ordinary server as RAM-only because its name or location looks similar.
A VPN connection is active but a suspicious page or file is still dangerous
That result is consistent with the provider’s stated limitation. Keep endpoint security, browser protections, software updates, and phishing awareness active; the VPN is not a replacement for them.
