Apple Intelligence support starts with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus all iPhone 16 models and later generations named by Apple. A compatible model also needs supported software, enough storage for the downloaded models, matching device and Siri languages, and a feature that is available in your region. If you already own an eligible iPhone, you can try Apple Intelligence after updating; replacing it is unnecessary solely to gain access. If your iPhone is older, an upgrade is worthwhile only when the available features fit your language, region and regular needs, and replacing the phone makes sense for other reasons too.
Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence?
In Apple’s June 2026 announcement for iOS 27, the supported iPhone list begins with the two Pro models from the iPhone 15 generation and continues through the iPhone 16 family and later models.

| iPhone family | Apple Intelligence status | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15 Pro | Supported | Meets Apple’s stated hardware cutoff. |
| iPhone 15 Pro Max | Supported | Meets Apple’s stated hardware cutoff. |
| iPhone 16 models | Supported | Apple identifies the complete iPhone 16 family as compatible. |
| iPhone models released after the iPhone 16 family | Supported when included in Apple’s current compatibility list | Later hardware can change the list, so verify the exact model before buying. |
| Other iPhone 15 models | Not included in Apple’s June 2026 list | The announcement names the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, not the entire iPhone 15 range. |
That distinction matters: “iPhone 15” is not a sufficient answer. Apple’s published cutoff specifically names the iPhone 15 Pro generation. A standard iPhone 15 or another model not named on Apple’s compatibility page should not be treated as compatible simply because it shares the same generation number.

Hardware eligibility is only the first requirement
An eligible processor and model do not automatically turn on every Apple Intelligence feature. Apple Support describes several conditions that must be met together.
- Supported software: Install the iOS release required for the features you want. Apple’s iOS 27 announcement establishes the 2026 model cutoff, while Apple Support’s language documentation has been published for iOS 26.1 and later. The exact feature set can depend on the software build.
- Available device storage: Apple Support’s version indexed for this information reports a seven-gigabyte requirement for on-device Apple Intelligence models. Storage requirements can change between releases and localized support pages, so confirm the current figure in Apple’s documentation and leave more free space than the minimum when possible.
- Matching languages: The iPhone language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language. A mismatch can prevent setup even when the hardware is eligible.
- Regional availability: Apple says availability varies by platform, language and region. A feature shown in an announcement may not be offered where you live or in your selected language.
- Model downloads: After activation, the on-device models download to the iPhone. The download needs free storage and a reliable connection.
These requirements explain why two people with the same iPhone can see different Apple Intelligence options. Model eligibility is a hardware gate; software, language, region and storage determine what can actually be enabled.
How to turn on Apple Intelligence on a compatible iPhone
If your model is eligible, try the feature before considering a replacement. Use this sequence:

- Update iOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the supported release. Keep the iPhone connected to power if the update is large.
- Check language settings. Open Settings > General > Language & Region and then Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Set the device language and Siri language to the same supported language.
- Open the Apple Intelligence controls. In Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, switch on Apple Intelligence when the option is offered. Apple may present setup information or a download prompt.
- Free storage if needed. Review Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Remove or offload unneeded downloads if the model download cannot complete. Keep personal data backed up before deleting anything important.
- Wait for the models to download. Leave the iPhone on Wi-Fi and power when possible. Some capabilities will not appear until the download and activation finish.
- Test an available feature. Try a writing, image, photo or Siri function that Apple lists for your software version and language. Do not assume that a missing function indicates a hardware fault; it may be a regional or language limitation.
If Apple Intelligence does not appear in Settings, first recheck the model, software version, language match and available storage. A supported iPhone that is still downloading its models may show fewer controls temporarily.

Which languages and regions are covered?
Apple Support’s iOS 26.1-and-later documentation lists English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Chinese in Simplified and Traditional forms, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. Apple’s iOS 27 announcement provides its own supported-language information and warns that some features may not be available in every language or region.
Language support is feature-specific, not a promise that every capability works identically in every translation. For example, Apple’s September 2026 announcement says that Siri AI is “rolling out in beta in English” in iOS 27 and related operating systems, and requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language. That wording describes a staged beta rollout, not universal availability.
Before upgrading for one particular function, check three things separately: whether your language is listed, whether your country or region is supported, and whether the specific function has reached general availability there. Changing Siri’s language only to unlock a feature can affect recognition and responses in everyday use, so it is not a frictionless workaround for everyone.

What Apple Intelligence does on iPhone
Apple presents Apple Intelligence as a group of integrated writing, image, photo and assistant capabilities rather than as one standalone application. The iPhone guide and Apple’s announcements describe tools that can help with communication, generate or transform images, work with photos, and add new Siri interactions.

Writing and communication
Writing-related tools are intended to work inside supported Apple software and can assist with composing or revising text. Their practical value depends on the languages and applications available on your device. If you mainly write in an unsupported language or use apps that do not expose the relevant controls, owning compatible hardware may not change your workflow much.
Images and photos
Apple also describes image-generation and photo-related features. Some image capabilities rely on server-side models, and Apple’s current iPhone guide says certain server-dependent functions can have daily usage limits. A feature can therefore be technically available while still being subject to a quota.
Siri AI
Siri AI is the most visibly conditional part of the rollout. As of Apple’s September 2026 statement, it was rolling out in beta in English. Beta status means behavior, coverage and limits can change with later software updates; do not buy a phone on the assumption that every announced Siri capability is already finished or available in your language.

Apple’s setup downloads models to the iPhone, so some processing can occur on the device. Other functions use Apple’s server-side models. The distinction matters for availability and expectations:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is upgrading worth it?
There is no universal yes or no. The answer depends first on whether you already own compatible hardware, then on whether the features you want are usable in your circumstances.
| Your situation | Practical recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, an iPhone 16 model or another listed compatible model. | Update iOS and try Apple Intelligence before replacing the phone. | Apple describes activation through software settings; a new phone is not required merely to test the feature. |
| You own an older or unlisted iPhone and want a specific feature. | Consider an upgrade only after confirming the feature, language and region. | Unsupported hardware cannot be made compatible by changing a setting, and availability is not uniform. |
| Your language or region is not supported for the desired feature. | Do not upgrade solely for that feature yet. | A newer iPhone does not remove a language or regional restriction. |
| Your current phone also has battery, camera, performance or repair problems. | Evaluate Apple Intelligence alongside those broader replacement reasons. | The value of a new phone comes from the whole device, not one software label. |
| You are interested mainly in beta Siri features. | Wait or upgrade only if you accept changing coverage and beta behavior. | Apple describes Siri AI as rolling out in beta in English as of September 2026. |
Apple’s materials do not provide a measured productivity benefit, an independent quality test or a universal cost-benefit threshold. That means a responsible decision has to be personal. Ask what you would actually do with the tools each week: revise messages, experiment with image features, search photos, or use new Siri interactions. If the answer is “occasionally,” the software alone is a weak reason to replace a functioning phone. If you regularly need those functions and your present model is below the cutoff, Apple Intelligence can be one factor in a broader upgrade decision.
A practical decision process before buying
- Write down the exact feature you want. “Apple Intelligence” covers several tools, and they do not share identical rollout conditions.
- Check your current model. If it is already listed, test it instead of assuming a new purchase is necessary.
- Verify language and region. Confirm that the particular function works where you live and in the language you use with Siri and the iPhone.
- Check software and storage. Install the supported iOS release and make room for the on-device models.
- Assess how often you will use it. Occasional curiosity usually does not justify replacing a healthy phone by itself; frequent, relevant use may strengthen the case.
- Consider the rest of the phone. Battery health, camera performance, remaining storage, repair cost and expected support life can matter more than an AI feature.
- Recheck volatile details. Apple can change language coverage, storage requirements, regional access and server usage limits with later releases.
Common misunderstandings
“Every iPhone 15 supports Apple Intelligence.”
Apple’s June 2026 list does not say that. It names the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, while the iPhone 16 family is listed as a whole.

“Buying a compatible phone unlocks every feature immediately.”
Compatibility is necessary but not sufficient. Software version, storage, matching languages, region and staged rollouts can each change what appears.
“A beta announcement means the final feature is available everywhere.”
Apple’s September 2026 wording specifically describes Siri AI as rolling out in beta in English. Other languages and regions can follow different schedules.
“If a feature has a limit, the iPhone is underpowered.”
Apple says some server-side features may have daily usage limits. That is a service-capacity rule, not a statement that your hardware failed the compatibility test.
Bottom line for each type of buyer
If you already have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 model or another model on Apple’s current list, update the software and try the features available in your language and region. Replacing that phone solely for Apple Intelligence is not necessary.
If you have an older, unlisted iPhone, upgrade only after confirming that the feature you care about is available where you live and that you will use it often enough to justify replacing the entire device. Apple’s announcements establish compatibility and rollout conditions; they do not establish a universal value threshold. Your own usage and the condition of your current phone remain the deciding factors.
