Use Gaming Focus (or Do Not Disturb) to filter notifications, and use Low Power Mode when extending battery life matters more than maximum frame rate. Game Mode is a separate performance feature for iPhone with iOS 18 or later and a supported game; it prioritizes the game but is not documented as a battery-saving mode. Adaptive Power can automate some power reductions on supported models.
The best combination depends on your priority. Competitive players who need a high refresh rate should normally use Gaming Focus without Low Power Mode. Players trying to finish a long session on a low battery can add Low Power Mode, accepting slower tasks and a 60-frame-per-second limit on ProMotion displays. Apple’s guidance used here was accessed October 13, 2026, and labels can vary by iPhone model and software version.

How the settings differ
These controls solve different problems. Focus settings filter notifications; Game Mode allocates more system attention to the game; Low Power Mode limits selected power-hungry behavior; and Adaptive Power makes model-dependent adjustments automatically. Turning on one does not automatically enable all the others.
| Setting | Main purpose | Availability or requirement | Gaming consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaming Focus | Silence unwanted notifications | Available through the Focus settings; it can activate automatically when a wireless gaming controller connects | People and apps you allow can still notify you |
| Do Not Disturb | Quick, broad notification filtering | Control Center > Focus > Do Not Disturb | Configure exceptions if urgent contacts must reach you |
| Game Mode | Prioritize game performance | iPhone with iOS 18 or later and a supported game | Prioritizes CPU and GPU access; it is not a promised battery-life extension |
| Low Power Mode | Reduce power use | Settings path differs between iPhone 15 and later and iPhone 14 and earlier | May slow tasks and limits ProMotion refresh rate to 60 frames per second |
| Adaptive Power | Automatically moderate power use | Supported models only; Apple lists different defaults by model family | Can lower brightness, limit background activity, adjust performance and enable Low Power Mode at 20% battery |
Set up Gaming Focus to stop interruptions
Gaming Focus is the most targeted way to keep calls, messages and app alerts from breaking concentration while preserving your normal gaming performance. Focus filters notifications; it does not promise to suppress every message, visual element or alert generated inside a game itself.

Configure the allowed people and apps
- Open Settings > Focus.
- Select Gaming. If it is not already configured, choose the people who may notify you during play and the apps whose notifications you still want to receive.
- Review the allowed list before starting a session. A short list can keep the screen quiet while still allowing an urgent contact or an authentication app to reach you.
- Leave the Focus enabled for manual use when you start a game without a controller.
Apple says Gaming Focus turns on by default when a wireless gaming controller is connected to the iPhone. That automatic behavior is useful for controller-based play, but it should not be treated as proof that every controller or every game is compatible with every iPhone. Apple’s documentation establishes the controller relationship, not universal accessory compatibility.
When to select Gaming Focus yourself
If you play with touch controls, a wired accessory or a controller that does not trigger the automatic behavior, select Gaming Focus manually from the Focus settings before launching the game. Manual activation also makes sense when you want the same notification rules for a particular game regardless of which accessory is connected.
Focus is customizable. Decide in advance whether a call from a family member, a work contact or another specific person should break through. Allowing those contacts is safer than assuming that an entirely silent phone is appropriate in every situation.

Use Do Not Disturb for a fast, broad silence
For a one-time session, the fastest route is Control Center > Focus > Do Not Disturb. Do Not Disturb is one of the Focus options, so it uses the same general notification-filtering concept without requiring you to build a separate Gaming Focus profile first.
Before relying on it, check its allowed people and apps. Do Not Disturb is not a guarantee that every possible alert is blocked if exceptions are configured. It also does not remove content that a game displays within its own interface; it filters notifications delivered by the system.

Understand what Game Mode changes
Requirements
Apple lists two requirements for Game Mode: an iPhone running iOS 18 or later and a supported game. If either condition is missing, do not expect the Game Mode behavior described by Apple. Support is tied to the game and operating-system version, not simply to owning a recent-looking iPhone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerformance priority, not a battery promise
Apple describes the feature this way: “Game Mode optimises your gaming experience by giving your game the highest priority access to your CPU and GPU, lowering usage for background tasks.” In practical terms, that priority can help a supported game deliver smoother, more consistent frame rates and more responsive controls when background work would otherwise compete for resources.
Game Mode is therefore different from Low Power Mode. It is documented as a performance feature, not as a way to extend play time. Do not turn it on expecting a measured percentage of extra battery life, and do not describe it as a replacement for a charger or a power-saving setting.
Wireless controller and audio behavior
Apple also says Game Mode doubles Bluetooth sampling for wireless accessories such as game controllers and AirPods. The purpose is lower input and audio latency. That behavior can make a supported wireless setup feel more responsive, but the documentation does not establish compatibility for every accessory, iPhone model or game. Check the accessory and game requirements before buying or relying on a particular controller.

How to decide whether to use it
If your iPhone and game meet the iOS 18-or-later and supported-game requirements, Game Mode is the appropriate setting when stable performance and responsiveness are your priority. Pair it with Gaming Focus if notifications are distracting. Keep in mind that Game Mode and Focus address different layers of the experience: one manages system resources for the game, while the other filters notifications.
Reduce power use with Low Power Mode
Open the correct control
- On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
- Apple also documents adding the Low Power Mode control to Control Center, which is useful when you need to change the setting between matches.
The exact menu depends on the iPhone generation. If a major iOS update changes the wording, follow the current labels shown on the device rather than assuming the older path still applies.
What Low Power Mode limits
Apple says Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting some features and background activity. Its documented effects include reduced display brightness, disabling Background App Refresh and turning off some visual effects. Apple also cautions that some tasks may run more slowly.
On an iPhone with a ProMotion display, Apple says Low Power Mode limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second. That is the most important gaming trade-off: a game capable of presenting a higher refresh rate may no longer do so while Low Power Mode is active. If your priority is competitive motion clarity or the highest available frame rate, leave Low Power Mode off and manage charging instead.
When Low Power Mode makes sense for gaming
- Use it for a long, casual session where conserving charge matters more than maximum refresh rate.
- Use it when you are away from a charger and accept that menus, background activity or other tasks may respond more slowly.
- Avoid it for a high-frame-rate game when the 60-fps ProMotion limit would undermine the reason you chose that display.
Low Power Mode automatically turns off when the iPhone charges to 80% or higher, according to Apple’s power-mode guidance. Check the control again after charging if you want it to remain enabled for the rest of a session; the automatic shutoff is intentional.

Know the limits of Adaptive Power
Adaptive Power is not a universal iPhone setting and is not specifically a gaming guarantee. On supported models, Apple says it can lower brightness, limit background activity, make performance adjustments and turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%.
Apple lists Adaptive Power as on by default for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Apple lists it as off by default for the iPhone 16 family, iPhone 16e and the iPhone 15 Pro models identified on its power-modes page. Availability and default state are model-dependent, so do not generalize the feature to every iPhone or assume that a missing toggle indicates a fault.
Adaptive Power is useful when you want the phone to react to battery conditions without manually switching modes. It can, however, make changes that are undesirable during a performance-sensitive match, including enabling Low Power Mode at 20% and therefore applying the refresh-rate and task-speed trade-offs described above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a setup for the type of session
| Session priority | Recommended controls | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive play and highest available frame rate | Gaming Focus; Game Mode when the iPhone and game qualify | Filters interruptions while preserving the performance-oriented behavior; avoid Low Power Mode if the ProMotion 60-fps limit matters |
| Touch-control game with no controller | Manually enable Gaming Focus; add Game Mode only when supported | The controller-triggered Focus activation will not be the way you start the session |
| One short session with no time to configure a profile | Control Center > Focus > Do Not Disturb | Provides a quick notification filter; review exceptions for urgent contacts |
| Long casual session away from a charger | Gaming Focus plus Low Power Mode | Reduces selected power use, with slower-task and display-refresh trade-offs |
| Battery approaching 20% on a supported model | Check Adaptive Power status and decide whether its automatic behavior is acceptable | Adaptive Power may enable Low Power Mode at 20%, which can alter frame-rate behavior |
There is no Apple-published percentage for how much longer a named game will run under these settings. Actual drain varies with the game, iPhone model and operating conditions. Treat any improvement as situation-dependent rather than as a guaranteed number of additional minutes.
Troubleshoot common gaming problems
Notifications still appear
Open the active Focus profile and inspect its allowed people and apps. An allowed contact or app can still notify you by design. If the alert is generated inside the game rather than delivered as a system notification, Focus is not documented as a way to remove it.

The game feels less smooth after enabling Low Power Mode
On ProMotion iPhones, check whether Low Power Mode is limiting the display to 60 frames per second. Also remember Apple’s warning that some tasks may run more slowly. Disable Low Power Mode when consistent high-frame-rate output is more important than conserving charge.
Game Mode does not seem to be available
Confirm both prerequisites: the iPhone must run iOS 18 or later, and the game must be supported. A controller connection alone does not establish that Game Mode is available. It may activate only for a supported title, while Gaming Focus is the separate notification feature.
Battery life did not improve as expected
Do not judge Low Power Mode or Adaptive Power against a promised gaming-time figure; Apple’s cited documentation does not publish one. Game workload, device conditions and the way you play affect consumption, so a setting that reduces background activity may not produce the same result in every title.

Apple notes that settings paths can vary by model and software version. Recheck the current Battery, Focus and Control Center labels on the iPhone, particularly after a major iOS update, before concluding that a control has been removed.
A practical pre-game checklist
- Open Gaming Focus and verify the people and apps allowed to break through.
- If you need immediate silence, use Control Center > Focus > Do Not Disturb and confirm its exceptions.
- For Game Mode, verify iOS 18 or later and support for the game you are about to launch.
- Decide whether a 60-fps ProMotion limit and slower tasks are acceptable before enabling Low Power Mode.
- On a supported model, check whether Adaptive Power could enable Low Power Mode at 20% and affect a low-battery match.
- After charging to 80% or more, check Low Power Mode again because Apple says it turns off automatically at that point.
The simplest rule is to separate goals: use Gaming Focus or Do Not Disturb for interruptions, Game Mode for supported-game performance, and Low Power Mode or Adaptive Power when conserving charge outweighs frame-rate consistency.
