Which iPhone settings control access to your smart home accessories?

The main controls are in the Home app, not in one universal iPhone switch. Home Settings determine which people can use your accessories, whether a resident can connect from outside the house, and who can administer the home. Settings > Privacy & Security > HomeKit separately controls which third-party apps can read Home data. Supported Apple Home routers add a network-level layer. A home hub, such as a HomePod or Apple TV 4K, is required for remote resident access and guest access.

Start with the access question you need to answer

Before changing a setting, identify whether you are managing a person, an app, the network, or location-based behavior. These are separate controls:

  • People: Home invitations and Home Settings permissions decide what a resident or guest can control.
  • Apps: HomeKit privacy permission decides whether a third-party iPhone app can access names, rooms, and accessory data in your home.
  • Network: Apple Home Accessory Security can limit where an accessory connects on a compatible router.
  • Activity and location: Home can retain accessory activity and use location services for presence features, but those settings do not grant or revoke control.

Resident and guest access are different

Apple Home has two sharing roles. The role you choose when inviting someone determines both the breadth of access and whether you can schedule it.

Role Accessories Where it works Schedule Administration
Resident All accessories in the home Always locally; remote access can be enabled Not described as a guest-style schedule Separate permission controls whether the person can add or edit accessories, scenes, automations, and users
Guest Only selected eligible doors, locks, and security accessories Local-only on the home’s Wi-Fi Anytime, specific dates, or specific days and times Guest access is for control, not household administration

Apple describes residents as having local and optional remote access to all accessories at any time. Guests are deliberately narrower: you select the security accessories they may use and set when that access is valid. Both remote resident access and guest access require a home hub.

Invite someone as a resident or guest

  1. Open the Home app on the iPhone that manages the home.
  2. Tap Add, then choose Add People.
  3. Select Resident or Guest.
  4. For a guest, choose the eligible doors, locks, and security accessories, then select Anytime, Specific Dates, or Specific Days & Times.
  5. Send the invitation and wait for the recipient to accept it in Home.

Apple’s current iPhone guide says guest access requires iOS 18 or later; the guide referenced for the current interface is written for iOS 26. Labels can move slightly in later releases, but the role distinction remains the important decision.

Change what a resident is allowed to do

A resident’s ability to operate a light, lock, camera, or scene is not the same as the ability to manage the household. Home exposes those powers as separate switches.

Control Accessories Remotely

This permission governs connections from outside the home. With it enabled, the resident can use Home over the internet when the home has a configured hub. Turn it off to limit that person to the home’s Wi-Fi network; they can still control accessories locally if the rest of the invitation remains active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add and Edit Accessories

This administrative permission controls whether the shared resident can add or remove accessories, edit scenes and automations, and add or remove other users. Someone may therefore be trusted to turn devices on and off without being allowed to change the home’s configuration.

  • Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.
  • Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
  • Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
  • Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
  • Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.

Open the resident permission screen

  1. Open Home.
  2. Tap More (the button with three dots), then Home Settings.
  3. Tap the person’s name.
  4. Review Control Accessories Remotely and Add and Edit Accessories, and change only the permission needed.

On the latest Home architecture, a home hub is required to manage shared-user and remote-access permissions. If a switch is unavailable, check the hub and account prerequisites before assuming the invitation is broken.

Remove a former household member completely

  1. In Home, tap More > Home Settings.
  2. Select the person’s name.
  3. Choose the option to remove that person from the home and confirm.

This removes the Apple Home sharing relationship, but it may not revoke access granted in an accessory manufacturer’s separate app. If the person has an account for a camera, alarm, lock, or appliance service, open that service’s account-management screen and remove the user there as well. This second check matters even when the person no longer appears in Home.

Understand the home-hub requirement

A hub is the device that lets the home remain reachable when the owner is away. Apple gives HomePod and Apple TV 4K as examples. Remote resident control and guest access require a hub; without one, the documented control path is the same local Wi-Fi network.

Situation Hub needed? What the user can expect
Owner controls accessories while at home No, when the iPhone is on the home’s Wi-Fi Local control is available through the Home app.
Resident controls accessories while away Yes Remote access can work when the resident’s remote permission is enabled.
Guest uses a shared lock or security accessory Yes Access remains local-only and follows the selected schedule.
Owner shares control while away from home Yes on the latest Home version The owner can invite people and manage remote permissions remotely.

Do not buy a hub solely for same-Wi-Fi control. First check whether a compatible HomePod or Apple TV 4K is already configured as the home’s hub, then verify current model compatibility in Apple’s requirements because hardware support can change.

Control which iPhone apps can read Home data

Home sharing and app privacy are different systems. An invited person is a household member; an app is a software requester. To review apps that have asked to read HomeKit data:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap HomeKit.
  4. Review the listed apps and grant or revoke access as appropriate.

Approved apps may be able to read Home data such as room names and accessory names. Revoking this permission stops that app’s HomeKit data access, but it does not remove residents or guests and does not change their ability to control accessories in Home. Conversely, removing a person from Home does not automatically revoke an app’s permission on that person’s own iPhone.

Restrict an accessory’s network connections

On a compatible Apple Home router setup, network policy provides another layer beyond people and apps. It controls what network services an accessory can reach, which can reduce exposure but may affect updates or features.

Open Apple Home Accessory Security

  1. Open Home.
  2. Tap More > Home Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Network & Routers.
  4. Enable Apple Home Accessory Security.
  5. Select the accessory and choose a policy.
Policy Network behavior Trade-off
Restrict to Home The accessory can connect only to the home hub. Apple cautions that firmware updates or other services may stop working.
Automatic Home applies its standard managed behavior for the accessory. Less restrictive than an explicit home-only rule, but generally more convenient.
No Restriction The accessory is not limited by this Home network policy. Provides compatibility when a device needs broader network access, with less isolation.

The menu appears only with supported router hardware and a home hub. If a device stops updating or loses a cloud-dependent feature after choosing Restrict to Home, switch it to Automatic or No Restriction while you determine which service it needs.

Review activity history and location-based behavior

Activity History

To manage recorded accessory events, open Home > More > Home Settings > Activity. You can turn Activity History on or off. Eligible home members, except guests, can view activity for supported accessories such as locks, garage doors, security systems, and adaptive temperature thermostats. Apple says the history can show up to 30 days. Turning it off permanently deletes previously stored activity.

This is an auditing and privacy setting, not a control permission. It does not let a person operate an accessory and does not remove someone from the home.

Adaptive Temperature presence

On iOS 26, Home can use an iPhone’s location to determine whether a person is at home, away, or on the way home for Adaptive Temperature behavior. To stop that location use, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disabling this location source also affects other HomeKit features that rely on location. It does not withdraw the person’s resident or guest control permissions.

Troubleshoot sharing and permission problems

The sharing controls or invitation option is missing

  • Update the owner’s and invitee’s devices to current software.
  • Confirm that iCloud Home is enabled for the owner.
  • Make sure two-factor authentication is enabled.
  • Check that Apple Home is updated and that a home hub is configured when remote sharing is required.

Without a hub, invitations can be sent only while the owner is home and connected to the home’s Wi-Fi, and shared users can control accessories only on that network.

An invitation will not arrive or be accepted

  • Check whether the owner and invitee have blocked one another.
  • Temporarily review VPN and third-party security software, which can interfere with Home communication.
  • Verify that the invitee is accepting the invitation with the Apple Account intended for Home access.

A removed person can still operate a device

Check the accessory maker’s app and any linked account. Apple Home removal affects Apple’s sharing path; a separate service may retain its own user permission until you revoke it there.

Choose the narrowest control that solves the problem

  • Use a guest invitation for temporary, scheduled access to selected security accessories.
  • Use a resident invitation when someone needs the full home, then disable remote control if local-only access is sufficient.
  • Leave Add and Edit Accessories off unless the person must administer the home.
  • Review Privacy & Security > HomeKit when the concern is an app reading Home data rather than a person using devices.
  • Use router policies when the concern is an accessory’s network reach, and test updates after applying the most restrictive option.
  • Turn off Activity History or Home location use for privacy, understanding that these changes do not revoke control access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a guest control my accessories from outside the house?

No. Guest access is local-only and limited to the security accessories and schedule selected by the home owner. A home hub is still required for guest sharing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning off HomeKit access for an app remove a resident?

No. Settings > Privacy & Security > HomeKit controls an app’s access to Home data. Residents and guests are managed separately in Home > Home Settings.

What should I check after removing someone from Home?

Review every accessory manufacturer’s app and linked account. A separate app may still grant that person control even after Apple Home access is removed.
