iPhone 18 Pro is the best choice for Apple Intelligence if you want Apple’s strongest current iPhone hardware tier. Apple’s comparison page places it in the active lineup with an A20 Pro chip, and Apple lists it as compatible with Apple Intelligence. That is a recommendation based on Apple’s published hierarchy, not an independent performance benchmark.
If your priority is entry cost rather than maximum hardware, compare iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e. Both model families are listed as compatible, but the cheapest option depends on current pricing, storage configuration, region and promotions that are not established here.

The buying decision in one view
| What you want | Best fit | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strongest current Apple Intelligence hardware tier | iPhone 18 Pro | Apple lists an A20 Pro chip and includes the model among Apple Intelligence-compatible devices. | The recommendation is an inference from Apple’s model hierarchy, not an independent benchmark. |
| A newer iPhone with a lower entry point | Compare iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e | Apple lists both families as compatible. | No current street-price, carrier-promotion or independent battery and camera ranking is established here. |
| Using a phone you already own | iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max | Apple lists these devices as eligible when the software, language and storage requirements are met. | Feature availability still varies by language and region. |
| Maximum available local storage headroom for Apple Intelligence | iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max or iPhone Air | Apple says these models may use up to 14 GB of storage for Apple Intelligence. | That is a maximum allocation, not a promise that every feature will consume that amount. |
For most buyers, the practical choice is therefore between paying for the top current tier with iPhone 18 Pro and choosing one of the compatible 17e or 16e models at a lower price. Apple Intelligence eligibility alone does not tell you which phone has the best camera, longest battery life or best value; those comparisons require product-specific testing and current prices.
What Apple Intelligence compatibility requires
A supported iPhone and iOS 27
Apple says the next generation of Apple Intelligence is automatically available on eligible devices after updating to the 27.0 software releases across Apple platforms, in supported languages and regions. On iPhone, that means installing iOS 27 on a compatible model. Compatibility is not determined by the model name alone: an eligible phone running an older system may not expose the current feature set.

- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
Matching device and Siri languages
Apple requires the device language and Siri language to be the same. Changing only one of them can prevent Apple Intelligence from becoming available until the languages match. Apple lists support for English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Language support does not mean every feature works identically in every language. Apple warns that feature availability can vary by platform, language and region, so check the combination you actually use rather than assuming that a listed language unlocks every capability.
Enough free storage
Apple Intelligence needs local storage for its models and related data. Apple states that iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air can use up to 14 GB of storage, while up to 8 GB is required on other eligible iPhone models. “Up to” describes the maximum Apple publishes; the occupied amount can change as software and features change.

Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence?
| Apple-listed group | Compatibility status | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro and newer iPhone 18 models listed by Apple | Apple’s current product comparison includes newer iPhone 18 models, and Apple’s compatibility information includes iPhone 18 Pro. | For the current top tier identified here, choose iPhone 18 Pro. |
| iPhone 17 family, including iPhone 17e | Apple’s current product pages list newer iPhone 17 models, and the 17e family is identified as compatible. | Consider the 17e when you want a newer compatible phone without moving to the top Pro tier. |
| iPhone Air | Apple lists iPhone Air as compatible; Apple assigns the up-to-14-GB storage figure to this model. | It offers the higher published storage headroom, but display, camera, battery and price decisions remain separate. |
| iPhone 16 models, including iPhone 16e | Apple says Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 16 models or later. | iPhone 16e does support Apple Intelligence once the software, language, region and storage conditions are satisfied. |
| iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max | Apple specifically lists these two iPhone 15 models as eligible. | Owners can use Apple Intelligence without buying a newer phone, subject to the same requirements. |
The phrase “iPhone 16 models or later” should not be read as including every older iPhone. Apple’s explicit iPhone 15 support is limited to the Pro and Pro Max models.

Model-by-model buying advice
iPhone 18 Pro: best for the strongest current AI hardware
Choose iPhone 18 Pro if your main question is, “Which iPhone is best for Apple Intelligence?” Apple’s comparison page identifies an A20 Pro chip, and Apple’s compatibility information includes the model. That combination places it at the top of the current Apple Intelligence hierarchy described by Apple.
The recommendation is about capability tier, not a measured claim that every Apple Intelligence action will be faster than on every other compatible iPhone. Apple’s published pages do not provide independent sustained-performance tests, response-time tests or battery tests for this comparison. If you also care about photography, display size or endurance, evaluate those priorities separately before paying for the Pro model.

iPhone 17e is a sensible model to investigate when you want a newer iPhone with Apple Intelligence but do not need the top Pro tier. Apple lists the 17e family as compatible. Its suitability depends on the final price, storage capacity and hardware configuration available in your country.
Do not call it the cheapest iPhone with Apple Intelligence without checking live listings. Prices, carrier offers, refurbished stock and regional taxes can change the result. The available information establishes compatibility, not a worldwide price ranking.
iPhone 16e: does it support Apple Intelligence?
Yes. iPhone 16e falls within Apple’s iPhone 16 model generation, which Apple lists as eligible. Update it to iOS 27, make the device and Siri languages match, and keep enough free storage for Apple Intelligence.

- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
Whether iPhone 16e is the cheapest eligible iPhone is a market-by-market question. Compare the actual storage size, warranty, activation status and total cost in your region rather than relying on the model number alone.
Other iPhone 16 models
Apple’s compatibility statement covers iPhone 16 models or later, so the iPhone 16 family is an established route to Apple Intelligence. Select among those models using the factors that matter outside AI: screen dimensions, camera system, battery capacity, storage and current price.
No independent battery, camera or sustained-performance ranking is established here, so it would be misleading to declare one iPhone 16 variant the winner on those dimensions.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
These are the only iPhone 15 models Apple explicitly includes in its Apple Intelligence compatibility statement. If you already own one, upgrading solely for access to Apple Intelligence is unnecessary once iOS 27 and the other requirements are in place.
If you are buying one second-hand, verify that the phone is the Pro or Pro Max model, not a non-Pro iPhone 15, and check its available storage, battery condition, activation lock status and update eligibility before paying.

How to choose when Apple Intelligence is only one priority
Display and physical design
Apple Intelligence does not determine the screen size or shape you prefer. A larger display can make writing assistance, image editing and generated content easier to inspect, while a smaller or lighter phone may be more comfortable for one-handed use. Compare the physical dimensions and display specifications of the exact models in stock; eligibility alone cannot answer this choice.
Camera priorities
Apple Intelligence features may help with photo-related tasks, but they do not make every camera system equivalent. Decide whether you need telephoto reach, low-light performance, video capabilities or simply a reliable main camera, then compare the model specifications and independent tests for your market. No camera winner is established by Apple’s compatibility list.
Battery and sustained performance
AI compatibility is a baseline requirement, not a battery-life rating. Battery results vary with network conditions, brightness, workload, temperature and battery health. Likewise, a published chip name does not substitute for a sustained-performance test. Treat claims about endurance or long sessions as unverified unless they come with a defined test method.
Storage capacity
Start with the Apple Intelligence storage allowance, then add your normal photo, video and app usage. The 14-GB maximum Apple cites for iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air applies only to those models; other eligible iPhones have the published up-to-8-GB requirement. Buying the smallest capacity can leave little working room after system data and personal files are counted.
Price and availability: what you can and cannot conclude
Apple’s compatibility pages establish which devices can run Apple Intelligence, but they do not establish a single global “cheapest iPhone” answer. Retail prices differ by country, storage tier, taxes, financing, trade-in value, carrier promotion and whether the device is new or refurbished.

Before ordering, compare the exact model and capacity, warranty coverage, return period, network compatibility and software-update status. For iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e especially, write down the total purchase cost rather than comparing a headline monthly payment with an outright price.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm the exact model. For the iPhone 15 generation, only Pro and Pro Max are listed as compatible. For newer generations, verify the model appears on Apple’s current compatibility information.
- Confirm the software path. The phone must be able to install iOS 27, and the current Apple Intelligence release must be available for your region.
- Match languages. Set the device language and Siri language to the same supported language.
- Check free storage. Plan for up to 14 GB on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air, or up to 8 GB on other eligible models, in addition to your personal files.
- Check regional feature availability. Apple says features vary by language and region, so confirm the functions you actually need.
- Separate AI eligibility from hardware priorities. Compare display, camera, battery, capacity and price for the exact configuration you will buy.
- Verify the transaction. Check warranty, return terms, activation status and carrier compatibility, particularly for used or refurbished phones.
Setup and troubleshooting after purchase
Apple Intelligence does not appear
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and install iOS 27 if it is offered.
- Confirm that the phone is an eligible model, not merely an older iPhone with a similar design.
- Check that the device language and Siri language match and are supported in your region.
- Free storage by removing or moving large files, then allow the phone time to complete the required downloads.
- Restart the iPhone after the update and recheck the Apple Intelligence controls.
A feature is missing or behaves differently
Apple warns that feature availability varies by platform, language and region. A missing option may therefore reflect regional or language support rather than a hardware fault. Confirm those conditions before replacing the phone.
A feature stops responding after repeated use
Some server-side features have daily limits. Apple specifically identifies limits that can affect Siri AI, Intelligent Photo Editing Tools, Image Playground and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts. If one of these reaches its daily limit, try again later rather than assuming the iPhone is incompatible.
Privacy and processing
Apple describes Apple Intelligence as a combination of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute. Its product page states, “Your data is never stored” and “Used only for your requests.” Those statements describe Apple’s stated handling for the service; they do not remove the need to review the feature settings and permissions on your own phone.
On-device processing can work without sending every request to a server, while more demanding requests may use Private Cloud Compute. The exact path depends on the feature, language and software release, so availability should be judged by the function you intend to use rather than by a blanket assumption that all processing is local.
Final decision framework
- Buy iPhone 18 Pro when your first priority is Apple’s highest current iPhone hardware tier and you accept that the recommendation is based on Apple’s published hierarchy rather than independent benchmarking.
- Compare iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e when you want a lower-cost, compatible new phone. Let the live price, capacity, warranty and regional availability decide between them.
- Keep or buy iPhone 16 models when you want broad compatibility and a choice of configurations, while selecting the exact model for non-AI hardware needs.
- Keep an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max if you already own one and it can update to iOS 27; Apple lists both as eligible.
Apple Intelligence narrows the field, but it does not eliminate normal phone-buying decisions. Start with eligibility, then verify software, language, storage and regional support before comparing the camera, display, battery, warranty and price of the exact phone you plan to use.
