For most shots, tap the intended subject to place focus there, then touch and hold that focus area for AE/AF Lock if the phone keeps refocusing or changing brightness. For close-ups, move back or tap .5x when automatic macro switching produces a soft image. Also check for camera movement, a dirty lens, or a case, film, magnet, or lens accessory blocking the cameras.
Exposure controls can make a scene lighter or darker, but they do not correct focus blur. The right fix depends on whether the problem is missed focus, macro distance, movement, or an obstruction.

Match the fix to the kind of blur
iPhone Camera normally chooses focus and exposure automatically. A blurry result usually means the camera focused on the wrong part of the frame, the subject or phone moved during the exposure, the phone was too close for the active camera, or something interfered with the lens. Use this diagnosis before changing settings.

| What you see | Most likely cause | First action | What will not solve it |
|---|---|---|---|
| The background is sharp but your subject is soft | Focus landed on the wrong object | Tap the subject; use AE/AF Lock if focus keeps moving | Raising exposure |
| The image changes from sharp to soft while framing | Autofocus or auto-exposure is continually readjusting | Touch and hold the chosen focus area until AE/AF Lock appears | Turning on a permanent sharpness option; none exists |
| A close-up suddenly looks smeared or will not focus | Automatic macro-camera switching or an overly short working distance | Back up, or tap .5x on a supported iPhone | Holding the phone closer |
| Everything has a directional or ghosted smear | Phone or subject movement, often in low light | Hold the phone steady and give the camera more light or time | AE/AF Lock alone |
| Every photo is hazy, soft, or has a flare | Smudged lens, case, film, magnet, or lens attachment | Remove the obstruction and clean the front and rear lenses | Changing Photographic Style |
Optical image stabilization (OIS) on some iPhone cameras can reduce the effect of hand movement, but Apple does not provide a universal OIS switch. Stabilization also cannot freeze a moving person or object.

Set and hold focus on the intended subject
Use this sequence when the subject is not the sharpest part of the frame or when the camera keeps hunting for focus.
- Open the Camera app and compose the shot.
- Tap the part of the scene that should be sharp. A focus indicator appears at that location, and Camera meters exposure for the selected area.
- If the framing is static or the camera keeps changing focus, touch and hold that focus area until AE/AF Lock appears.
- Recompose without lifting your finger if needed, then take the photo.
- Tap the screen again to release the lock and return to automatic focus and exposure.
AE/AF Lock holds both the chosen focus distance and the exposure reading. It is useful for a subject behind glass, a face near a busy background, or a product that must remain sharp while you reframe. It does not stop the subject or the phone from moving, so a locked focus point cannot by itself eliminate motion blur.
Change exposure without mistaking brightness for sharpness
After tapping your subject, drag the on-screen exposure control up to brighten the image or down to darken it. On the Camera interface documented by Apple, the exposure adjustment remains in effect until Camera is opened again. A brighter exposure can help you see detail in a dark scene, but it does not repair an image that is out of focus.
Keep an exposure adjustment between sessions
If your iPhone supports the option, go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings > Exposure Adjustment and turn it on. This remembers your last exposure choice when you return to Camera. It preserves a control preference; it does not add stabilization or force the camera to use a particular focus distance.

Camera controls and their locations can differ by iPhone model and iOS release. If you do not see an exposure slider or the same icon arrangement, tap the subject first and look for the Camera tools available on your device rather than assuming a missing control is defective.
Prevent blur in close-up and macro photos
On supported iPhone models, Camera can automatically switch to the Ultra Wide camera when you move very close to a subject for macro photography. That camera may have a different minimum focusing distance, so the image can look blurry during the handoff or when the phone is closer than the active camera can focus.
- Move the iPhone slightly farther from the subject and try again.
- If the close-up is still soft, tap .5x to select the Ultra Wide camera where that control is available.
- Keep the phone steady while refocusing, then tap the exact detail you want sharp.
Apple says supported devices can focus at distances as close as 2 centimeters, but macro capture is not available on every iPhone. Do not expect a universal macro switch or a fixed focus-distance setting on models without the feature. If the scene is a little farther away, the regular camera may produce a cleaner result than forcing a close macro view.

Apple notes that accidentally moving the camera while taking a picture can make the result blurry. OIS is built into some iPhone cameras: a gyroscope detects movement and the lens shifts to counter some of it. Availability and which camera is stabilized vary by model, so there is no setting that enables OIS on every iPhone.

For handheld shots
- Hold the phone with both hands and keep your elbows close to your body.
- Press the shutter smoothly instead of jabbing the screen.
- Brace the phone against a stable surface when the scene is dark or the subject is still.
- For a stationary scene that demands repeatable framing, an optional small phone tripod or stand can keep the device from moving.
Movement blur can come from the subject as well as the photographer. A person walking, a pet turning its head, or leaves moving in wind may remain smeared even when the iPhone itself is steady. More light generally lets the camera use a shorter exposure, while very dark scenes require extra care with handholding.
Understand Prioritize Faster Shooting
Prioritize Faster Shooting changes image processing so the iPhone can accept more photos when you tap the shutter rapidly. Apple says it is on by default on supported models. You can turn it off in Settings > Camera > Prioritize Faster Shooting if your model exposes that option and you are diagnosing rapid-fire capture behavior.
This control is not presented by Apple as a general anti-blur switch. Turning it off does not guarantee a sharper image; it simply changes how the phone handles a quick sequence of shutter taps. For a single sharp frame, focus on steady framing, adequate light, and the correct focus point first.

Remove lens obstructions and clean the cameras
When every camera view looks soft, check the hardware before changing capture settings. Apple recommends removing anything that may block a camera or put a magnet near it, including a case, protective film, metallic case, magnetic lens mount, or lens converter. Take a test photo after removing the accessory.

- Remove the case, camera protector, film, lens converter, or magnetic mount.
- Inspect the front and rear lenses for fingerprints, condensation, dust, or adhesive residue.
- Wipe the lenses gently with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Take another photo in the same light and compare it with the obstructed setup.
A dirty lens often creates general haze or flare rather than a single missed-focus area. Do not use a rough fabric or abrasive cleaner on the lens surface. If the camera still does not work properly after removing accessories and cleaning the lenses, Apple says service may be needed.
Preserve useful camera choices
Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings controls whether selected choices survive when you close and reopen Camera. It does not make images sharper by itself. The options Apple lists, with availability depending on model, include:
| Preserve Settings option | What it remembers | How it relates to blur |
|---|---|---|
| Camera Mode | The last shooting mode, such as Video or Portrait | Prevents starting in an unintended mode; it does not stabilize a shot |
| Photographic Style | Your selected style | Changes rendering, not focus accuracy |
| Creative Controls | Previously used creative adjustments | Does not correct motion or missed focus |
| Depth Control | Portrait depth setting | Controls background blur effect, not accidental softness |
| Macro Control | Your macro switching choice on supported models | Can prevent unexpected macro handoffs when the option is available |
| Exposure Adjustment | Your last exposure setting; listed for iPhone 11 and later | Preserves brightness preference only |
| Night Mode | Whether your last Night mode choice is remembered | Does not remove the need to hold still during a long exposure |
| Portrait Zoom | Your selected Portrait zoom | Does not guarantee a sharp subject |
| Action Mode | Your Action mode choice where supported | Designed for action capture, but availability and behavior vary by model |
| ProRAW and Resolution Control | ProRAW or resolution selections | Changes file and resolution choices, not lens cleanliness or focus |
| Live Photo | Your last Live Photo setting | Does not prevent blur in the still frame |
Because the list is model-dependent, open Preserve Settings on your own iPhone to see which switches are offered. Remembering Macro Control can be useful if automatic switching repeatedly disrupts close-ups, but it remains a preference rather than a guarantee of sharpness.

- Clean and clear the cameras. Remove cases, films, magnets, converters, and lens mounts, then wipe both lens sets with a microfiber cloth.
- Test a normal-distance subject. Photograph a well-lit object several feet away. If it is sharp, the original problem may have been macro distance or movement rather than a failed camera.
- Tap the subject. Place the focus indicator over the feature that must be sharp.
- Lock when framing is stable. Touch and hold until AE/AF Lock appears, then capture without allowing the phone or subject to move.
- Test exposure separately. Adjust brightness only if the scene is too dark or bright; do not expect this to fix softness.
- For a close-up, back up. If the image improves when you move away, try .5x on a supported model or keep the greater working distance.
- Repeat in brighter light. If the image is sharp in daylight but blurred in a dark room, movement during a longer exposure is the likely explanation.
- Check rapid-fire behavior. If blur appears only while tapping repeatedly, review Prioritize Faster Shooting, but judge the result after a steady single capture too.
- Escalate persistent failure. If all lenses remain blurry after cleaning, accessory removal, proper focus, and a steady well-lit test, arrange Apple service.
Know the model and iOS limits
Macro capture, the .5x control, OIS coverage, Preserve Settings entries, and the exact Camera layout depend on the iPhone model and iOS version. Apple’s support instructions describe supported devices rather than promising identical controls across the entire iPhone range. Read the labels shown under Settings > Camera on your phone and treat any option marked as supported-model-only accordingly.
Do not look for a universal setting called “anti-blur,” “maximum stabilization,” or “fixed focus.” iPhone Camera combines automatic focus, exposure, stabilization hardware, and scene-specific modes. The most reliable approach is to identify the blur’s cause and apply the corresponding control.
Quick checklist before you retake the photo
- Is the intended subject under the focus indicator?
- Did you use AE/AF Lock only when the subject and framing were stable?
- Is the exposure adjustment being used for brightness rather than as a supposed sharpness control?
- Are you too close for the active camera, and would backing up or .5x help?
- Are both lenses clean and free of a case edge, film, magnet, or converter?
- Can you steady the phone or add light to shorten the exposure?
- Does your model actually support the macro, OIS, Action mode, or Preserve Settings option you are trying to use?
The setting that helps most is the one matched to the failure: tap or lock focus for a focus error, change distance for macro blur, steady the phone for movement, and remove or clean anything covering the lens. Exposure and Preserve Settings are useful controls, but neither is a universal cure for a soft photo.
