Start in Settings > Battery, identify apps with unusually high Background or Notifications activity, and then restrict only the features those apps do not need. Background App Refresh, background location, and notification alerts can all contribute to battery use, but disabling everything can break navigation, syncing, media playback, or timely messages. Low Power Mode is the quickest temporary bundle of changes; it is not a permanent diagnosis.
Check what is actually using the battery first
Open Settings > Battery before switching off settings at random. The Battery screen separates activity into categories such as On Screen, Background, Cellular Coverage, and Notifications. Select the relevant day or period, then inspect apps that show substantial background time or notification activity.

Apple’s examples of background work include turn-by-turn directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching. Those tasks can continue even when an app’s Background App Refresh switch is off. A long background duration compared with previous days is a useful clue, not proof that one setting is solely responsible.
- Background: The app or a related service was active while you were not looking at it.
- Notifications: Alerts woke the device to check for new information. Apple describes this as activity that “woke your device and used battery to check for new information.”
- On Screen: You actively used the app; reducing background settings will not change this category.
- Cellular Coverage: Poor or changing cellular coverage can increase power use, so a settings change may not solve that type of drain.
Record the top two or three offenders and what you need from each one. An app used for navigation has different requirements from a game that only sends promotional alerts. This short audit prevents the common mistake of disabling useful services across the entire phone.

Background App Refresh: restrict it selectively
Background App Refresh lets apps update content when you are not actively using them. It is the first setting to review for an app that has meaningful background activity and does not need fresh content immediately.
How to turn it off for individual apps
- Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
- Leave the main Background App Refresh control enabled if some apps need updates.
- Turn off the switch beside apps that do not need to prepare content in the background.
- Recheck Settings > Battery over the next day or two of normal use.
You can also disable Background App Refresh globally from the same screen, but that is a blunt change. Apps may not have the latest content ready when opened, and some workflows become less convenient. Selective switches usually preserve the features you care about while removing unnecessary work.
Do not interpret this control as an “all background activity” switch. Directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching are among the background activities Apple identifies separately. If the Battery screen still shows high background use after you restrict refresh, investigate location, media playback, syncing, or mail settings instead of repeatedly toggling the same switch.

Notifications: stop alerts that do not need to wake the phone
Every alert is a potential wake-up and network check. Apple says an app’s notifications can use battery while the device checks for new information. Reduce alerts for apps where immediate updates have little value.

Reduce notification activity without missing important messages
- Go to Settings > Notifications and select an app with high notification activity in Battery.
- Turn off Allow Notifications for apps whose alerts are unnecessary, or disable only Sounds, Badges, or delivery locations.
- Keep time-sensitive alerts, authentication codes, calls, safety warnings, and other notifications you genuinely need.
- Return to the Battery screen later and compare notification activity with the earlier period.
Notification reduction is different from silencing the phone. A scheduled or summary-style delivery option can reduce interruptions while preserving a reviewable list of updates, if that option is available for the app and your iOS version. The useful test is whether the app still wakes the device frequently for information you do not act on.
Background Location Services: change access app by app
Location access can be essential for navigation, delivery tracking, fitness recording, weather conditions, or other functions. It can also create repeated background activity when an app does not need your position continuously.
Review and tighten location permissions
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Review apps marked as having access, then open one that appears related to battery activity.
- Choose the least permissive option that still supports the feature you use, such as Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always, depending on the choices shown on your iPhone.
- Check whether Precise Location is necessary. Disable it only when approximate location is sufficient for that app.
Apple notes that when an app uses location in the background, the device may remind you periodically and display those locations on a map. Those reminders are a signal to review the permission, not an instruction to turn off location everywhere. Keep background access for navigation or another function that must continue while the screen is locked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLow Power Mode: the fastest temporary battery-saving option
Low Power Mode bundles several changes instead of asking you to find every individual switch. Apple says it turns off Background App Refresh and email fetch, turns off automatic downloads, temporarily pauses iCloud Photos, reduces brightness, and uses a 30-second Auto-Lock default. It turns off automatically when the iPhone charges to 80% or higher.

Turn it on
- iPhone 15 and later: Open Settings > Battery > Power Mode, then enable Low Power Mode.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Open Settings > Battery, then enable Low Power Mode.
Use it when you need extra runtime before charging, during travel, or while troubleshooting. Expect delayed background updates, paused iCloud Photos work, and slower delivery of some fetched mail or app content. Because the mode is automatically disabled after charging to at least 80 percent, it is better suited to temporary conservation than to diagnosing a single misbehaving app.
Adaptive Power: an option on supported iPhones
Some iPhone models offer Adaptive Power in Settings > Battery > Power Mode. Apple says it can limit background activity and make other adjustments. Availability depends on the iPhone model and software version, so the switch may not appear on your device.
Apple’s current support guidance says Adaptive Power needs at least seven days to learn your charging habits before it engages. Treat it as an automatic balancing feature, not an immediate fix. Check Apple’s current supported-model list and the Power Mode screen on your own iPhone before relying on it.

Choose settings according to what each app does
| Setting to review | Best candidate for restriction | Keep enabled when you need | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Background App Refresh | An app with high Battery background activity that only provides convenience updates | Content prepared before opening, routine updates, or workflows that depend on background refresh | New content may not appear until you open the app |
| Notifications | Promotions, social updates, or low-priority alerts that frequently wake the phone | Security codes, calls, safety information, and genuinely urgent messages | Alerts may be delayed, grouped, or absent |
| Background Location | An app that does not need your position while closed | Navigation, active tracking, delivery status, or another feature that must continue with the screen locked | Location-based automation or tracking can stop working |
| Low Power Mode | A short-term need for maximum remaining runtime | Travel, emergencies, or periods when charging is unavailable | Refresh, fetch, downloads, photo syncing, brightness, and Auto-Lock behavior change together |
The Battery screen supplies the first comparison axis: how much activity is attributed to background work or notifications. Your second axis is usefulness: does the app need timely updates, navigation, media playback, or syncing? The third is tolerance for delay. A setting is worth restricting when its measured activity is meaningful and its function is optional at the time.

A practical sequence for finding and fixing drain
- Observe: Open Settings > Battery and note apps with unusually high Background or Notifications activity.
- Classify: Decide whether the activity is refresh, location, media playback, photo syncing, mail fetching, or another task.
- Change one category: Restrict Background App Refresh, notifications, or location for the specific app rather than changing all three everywhere.
- Use the phone normally: Give the change enough ordinary use to produce a comparable Battery view. Avoid judging it immediately after a major photo import, software update, or unusually long navigation session.
- Verify the function: Open the app, test any affected workflow, and confirm that messages, navigation, media, or syncing still meet your needs.
- Escalate carefully: If the same app remains high, review its own in-app sync or playback controls and check for a task that is intentionally running. Then inspect Battery Health.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Turning off every location permission
This can break navigation and other services that depend on position. Restrict only apps that do not need background access, and retain the permission level required by the feature.
Assuming Background App Refresh explains all background use
It does not cover every kind of background work. Directions, music, photo syncing, and mail fetching can still appear as background activity. Identify the actual task before changing more settings.
Disabling all notifications
Alerts can be a battery cost, but they can also carry security and safety information. Remove low-value alerts first and preserve the categories that require prompt attention.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Expecting a guaranteed percentage saving
Apple’s guidance does not provide a universal percentage for savings from any one switch. Results depend on the app, network conditions, usage pattern, battery age, and whether the phone is performing another intensive task. Measure your own Battery screen instead of relying on a fixed promise.
Best Value
Ignoring cellular coverage
If Battery attributes substantial use to Cellular Coverage, a background-setting change may have little effect. Poor signal conditions can keep the phone working harder to maintain service.
When settings are not the real problem
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and check the condition message. If it shows Service, Apple advises considering battery replacement through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. A worn battery cannot be restored by disabling Background App Refresh or notifications; settings can reduce activity, but they do not repair battery health.
If Battery Health does not indicate service and one app still dominates the Background category, check whether it is intentionally playing audio, navigating, syncing a large library, or fetching mail. Stop the task when finished, then review the Battery screen again. If the pattern persists, update iOS and the app when updates are offered, and contact the app’s support channel if its behavior appears abnormal.
Which approach should you use?
- For one noisy app: Start with its Battery entry, then restrict that app’s notifications, Background App Refresh, or location permission as appropriate.
- For a short-term battery emergency: Turn on Low Power Mode and accept its bundled delays and pauses.
- For navigation or active tracking: Keep the required location access and reduce unrelated alerts or refresh activity instead.
- For persistent drain despite light use: Check cellular coverage and Battery Health before disabling more features.
- For supported newer models: Consider Adaptive Power after confirming that your iPhone and software support it; it may take at least seven days to learn charging habits.
The most effective strategy is targeted rather than absolute: use Battery activity to find the source, remove only unneeded background work, and verify that the app still performs the job you rely on. Low Power Mode remains the convenient fallback when preserving charge matters more than immediate updates and automatic syncing.
