Which iPhone 17 settings should you change first? A practical iOS 26 checklist

Which iPhone 17 settings should you change first? Start with access and recovery, then audit app permissions, inspect battery activity, and only afterward tune display, notifications, camera, and accessibility features. This order protects your phone before it is lost, avoids breaking apps with blanket privacy changes, and lets you diagnose battery use instead of guessing.

Apple lists iPhone 17 models as compatible with iOS 26. The labels below follow the iOS 26 iPhone User Guide; if a menu is in a different place on your build, use the Settings search field and search for a term such as volume or Find My.

1. Secure access and recovery before anything else

These controls matter even if you are still copying data from an old phone. A strong passcode and a working recovery service determine whether someone who finds the device can open it and whether you can locate it after it disappears.

Set up Face ID and a strong passcode

  1. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
  2. Enter your current passcode, then choose Set Up Face ID and follow the on-screen head movement prompts.
  3. Review the switches under Use Face ID For, such as iPhone Unlock, App Store purchases, Apple Pay, password autofill, and other supported apps. Leave only the uses you are comfortable authorizing with your face.
  4. Choose Change Passcode if the current code is short, reused, or easy to guess. A longer alphanumeric code offers more combinations than a simple four- or six-digit code.

Apple says Face ID can unlock the iPhone, sign in to many apps, and authorize purchases. Its Face ID data stays on the device rather than being sent to Apple. Face ID is convenience, not a replacement for the passcode: the passcode is still required after a restart, after certain security events, and when iOS requests it.

Turn on Find My iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone.
  2. Turn on Find My iPhone. Also review Find My network and Send Last Location when those options are offered on your device.
  3. Confirm that the Apple Account shown at the top of Settings is the account you can actually access. Recovery is difficult if the phone is attached to an account whose password or verification method you no longer control.

Find My can help locate a missing or stolen iPhone, including through iCloud.com when you cannot open the Find My app. Test the account sign-in on another trusted device or browser before you need it; testing confirms that two-factor authentication and recovery details work.

Review Lock Screen access and Emergency SOS

Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and inspect the Allow Access When Locked list. Items such as Control Center, accessories, reply to messages, and Wallet can be useful without unlocking, but they also expose more functions to anyone holding the phone. Keep only the lock-screen actions you genuinely need.

Then open Settings > Emergency SOS. Read the call and countdown behavior, check which side-button sequence starts an emergency call, and decide whether emergency contacts should receive an alert. Do not change a safety option without understanding how you would activate it under stress.

Lock Screen access Disable controls that reveal data or allow actions while locked. Keep frequently used controls available without unlocking.
Face ID uses Authorize only phone unlock and selected apps. Use Face ID for purchases, password autofill, and every compatible app.
Emergency SOS Understand the trigger and countdown before enabling extra behavior. Keep automatic calling and contact notifications configured for rapid response.

2. Audit privacy permissions instead of switching everything off

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security. Apple’s permission pages show which apps have requested each type of access, and you can grant or revoke access app by app. The right choice depends on what an app actually does: a navigation app needs location for turn-by-turn directions, while a calculator usually does not.

Check Location Services first

  1. Open Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  2. Review the list one app at a time. Choose Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always where available.
  3. Scroll to System Services and inspect system-level location functions. Leave a service on when you rely on the feature it supports; disable only services whose purpose you understand.

Turning Location Services off globally can limit navigation, weather, geotagging, device recovery, and other functions. Per-app choices usually reduce unnecessary sharing without breaking the rest of the phone.

Review Photos, Contacts, Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth, and Local Network

Open each category under Privacy & Security and remove access that no longer matches your use. For Photos, select limited or full-library access according to whether an app needs one image or an entire library. Contacts access is appropriate for an app that actually imports or matches contacts; deny it for services that have no such feature.

Camera and Microphone permissions deserve a quick second look because they can expose conversations or images. Apple’s hardware-access guide states, “The list shows the apps that requested access.” A green indicator appears when the camera is active; an orange indicator appears when the microphone is active without the camera. If an indicator appears unexpectedly, open Control Center to see recent use and then revisit the app’s permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth access is separate from pairing a device. An app may need it to discover accessories or nearby hardware, but most apps do not need continuous Bluetooth scanning. Local Network access controls whether an app can discover devices on your Wi-Fi network, such as speakers, printers, or smart-home equipment.

Permission Typical reason to allow Useful first-day question
Location Navigation, local results, geotagging, device-recovery features. Does this app need my position all the time, only while open, or not at all?
Photos Selecting, editing, or uploading images. Can limited photo access complete the task?
Contacts Calling, messaging, or contact matching. Will the app function without my address book?
Camera and Microphone Video calls, recording, scanning, or voice features. Would I notice if this app used the sensor outside its main feature?
Bluetooth and Local Network Accessory discovery and control of devices on your network. Is there a specific accessory or local device this app controls?

3. Diagnose battery use before making blanket changes

Open Settings > Battery. Start with the activity graph, app and system percentages, battery suggestions, and any Insights message. This tells you whether one app, poor cellular reception, a display setting, or background system work is responsible for a complaint.

Allow time after setup or an update

Apple notes that a recent iOS update or a new-device setup can temporarily reduce battery life and increase heat while indexing, restoring content, analyzing photos, and completing other work in the background. If the phone was updated or restored recently, wait a few days and check Battery again before disabling services. Battery guidance published by Apple on September 18, 2026, specifically recommends this recheck approach.

Try Adaptive Power on iPhone 17

iOS 26 or later is required for the Daily Usage chart and Adaptive Power. On iPhone 17 models, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode and review Adaptive Power. When enabled, it can make adjustments on higher-use days and may turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20 percent. That 20 percent point is an operating threshold, not a promise of a specific number of extra hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Low Power Mode when the trade-off is acceptable

Turn it on from Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode, or add it to Control Center for quicker access. Apple documents that Low Power Mode reduces or disables some activity, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. It turns off automatically once the charge rises above 80 percent. Because those features may be delayed or unavailable, use Low Power Mode for a long day, travel, or an approaching empty battery rather than assuming it should stay on permanently.

Battery situation First action Trade-off
Phone is newly set up or recently updated Check Battery Insights and wait a few days while background work finishes. Delays a definitive diagnosis, but avoids disabling useful services unnecessarily.
Usage spikes on demanding days Consider Adaptive Power under Power Mode. iOS may make automatic adjustments and may enable Low Power Mode at 20 percent.
You need maximum remaining runtime Enable Low Power Mode. Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some effects are reduced or disabled; it ends above 80 percent.
One app dominates activity Check that app’s background activity, notifications, location, and refresh needs individually. Restricting a permission can remove part of the app’s functionality.

4. Set the display for comfort and sensible power use

Leave Auto-Brightness on unless you have a reason not to

Find it at Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. Auto-Brightness adjusts the screen to ambient light. Dimming the display generally uses less power, and Apple warns that disabling Auto-Brightness may increase power use. If the screen repeatedly looks too bright or too dim, adjust the brightness slider and give the sensor time to learn your preference rather than immediately disabling the feature.

Choose True Tone, Night Shift, and Dark Mode independently

True Tone adapts color and intensity to the surrounding light, which can make the screen look more natural indoors. Night Shift shifts colors warmer on a schedule you set under Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift. Dark Mode changes the interface appearance and can be scheduled from Settings > Display & Brightness. These are preference controls; the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed battery saving amount for Dark Mode or a sleep benefit for Night Shift.

Control What it changes When to choose it
Auto-Brightness Screen luminance in response to ambient light. Most users who want comfort with less manual adjustment.
True Tone Color temperature and intensity to match the room. Users who prefer a less stark, room-matched display.
Night Shift Warmer colors during scheduled hours. Users who like a warmer evening appearance.
Dark Mode Interface color scheme. Users who prefer a dark interface or want an automatic day/night appearance.

5. Reduce notification noise without missing important alerts

Open Settings > Notifications and review apps individually. For each one, decide whether alerts should appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, as banners, with sounds, or in a scheduled summary. Keep time-sensitive alerts that you rely on and remove promotional or repetitive alerts. Turning off every notification can hide a security warning, delivery update, or message you expected, so make the decision app by app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For periods that need concentration, configure Settings > Focus. A Focus profile can silence selected people and apps and can be scheduled by time, location, or activity. Build one profile for a real situation—such as work, sleep, or driving—instead of repeatedly changing global notification settings.

6. Change camera settings only for a defined workflow

Open Settings > Camera and review formats, resolution, grid, video options, and other controls. The best choice depends on whether your priority is image quality, storage space, editing compatibility, composition, or a repeatable video workflow.

  • Review formats when files must work with a particular editor or device.
  • Do not change a camera option merely because it is available. Make the change when it solves a specific storage, quality, or workflow problem.

7. Use accessibility controls when they improve your experience

Open Settings > Accessibility and browse the categories that match your needs. Larger text, display adjustments, spoken content, touch accommodations, hearing features, and motion controls are useful to people who need or prefer them; they are not universal optimization steps. Change one option at a time and test it in the apps you use most so you can identify which setting helped.

8. A practical first-day sequence

  1. Set or change the passcode and complete Face ID.
  2. Enable Find My iPhone at Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone; verify account access.
  3. Review Lock Screen access and read the Emergency SOS behavior.
  4. Open Privacy & Security and audit Location Services, Photos, Contacts, Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth, and Local Network.
  5. Open Battery, read Insights, and note whether setup or an update is still processing.
  6. Decide whether Adaptive Power fits your usage; reserve Low Power Mode for situations where its feature reductions are acceptable.
  7. Leave Auto-Brightness on initially, then choose True Tone, Night Shift, and Dark Mode according to your comfort.
  8. Trim notifications app by app and create a Focus profile for a specific recurring situation.
  9. Adjust Camera or Accessibility settings only when you can name the quality, storage, comfort, or workflow problem being solved.

Fixes for common first-day problems

Battery is hot or draining quickly

Check Battery activity and Insights first. If setup or an update is recent, allow several days for background work to settle. If one app remains dominant, review its notifications, location level, and background behavior rather than disabling every system feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An app stops working after a privacy change

Return to Settings > Privacy & Security, open the relevant permission category, and restore access only if the app’s function requires it. For example, a scanning app needs Camera access, while a local-media controller may need Local Network access.

You cannot find a setting

Swipe down in the Settings app to reveal its search field and enter a plain-language term. Search is often faster than checking every category, and labels can vary by model or iOS 26 update.

Face ID does not unlock the phone

Confirm that Face ID is enabled for iPhone Unlock, the TrueDepth area is unobstructed, and you are looking toward the phone. If iOS asks for the passcode, enter it; that request is a normal security requirement after certain events.
