These settings solve different problems. Private Relay masks Safari traffic details, Hide My Email limits who receives your personal address, Advanced Data Protection encrypts more iCloud categories end to end, and Optimize iPhone Storage reduces local photo and video usage without reducing the originals stored in iCloud.

Which iCloud+ settings are worth enabling?
Use the setting that matches the risk or capacity problem you actually have. The comparison below separates privacy coverage, storage effects and recovery obligations.

How to turn on iCloud Private Relay
Private Relay is the best first switch if your concern is Safari privacy on public Wi-Fi, cellular networks or a home connection. Apple describes the mechanism this way: “When iCloud Private Relay is on, the traffic leaving your iPhone is encrypted and sent through two separate internet relays.” The two-relay design separates your identity from the sites you visit, rather than sending all device traffic through one conventional VPN endpoint.

Enable it on each device
- On an iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap [your name], then iCloud.
- Choose Private Relay and turn it on.
- Repeat the process on every iPhone, iPad or Mac where you want Safari protection. Apple treats the switch as device-specific.
Menu wording can vary by operating-system version. If the option is absent or unavailable, check whether iCloud+ is active and whether the feature is offered in your country or region.
Choose how much location detail Safari reveals
Private Relay offers an IP Address Location choice. Maintain General Location gives websites a broad area so local content, language and nearby services continue to work. Use Country and Time Zone makes your location less specific by limiting the signal to your country and time zone. The second option gives more obscurity but can make local results less relevant.
Understand what Private Relay does not cover
Private Relay is specifically a Safari feature in Apple’s documentation. It is not described as a universal VPN for every app, browser or background connection. A Wi-Fi network’s Limit IP Address Tracking setting can also affect whether Private Relay works on that network. If Safari suddenly displays a notice that the service is unavailable, test another network and inspect that network-specific setting before assuming your iCloud account is broken.
How to use Hide My Email without losing important messages
Hide My Email creates unique, random addresses that forward to your personal inbox. A retailer, newsletter, app or person receives the generated address instead of the address tied to your Apple account. This prevents unrelated services from all holding the same identifier and lets you disable one address later without changing your main inbox.

Where it appears
On supported iPhone and iPad software, you can select Hide My Email in a Safari email field and in Mail’s From field. Apple also documents use in supported third-party apps, Apple Pay contexts and iCloud.com; the exact options depend on the device and operating-system version. If a particular app does not show the feature, it may not support the required system integration.
Create and manage addresses
- Open iCloud settings from Settings by tapping [your name] and then iCloud, or use the corresponding iCloud.com controls.
- Open Hide My Email to view existing addresses and create another one.
- When a website or app asks for an email address, select the Hide My Email option rather than typing your personal address.
- Keep a useful label or note for each address so you know which service it belongs to.
- Deactivate an address that attracts unwanted mail, then reactivate or permanently remove it only after confirming that no needed account still uses it.
Hide My Email is an address-forwarding layer, not an all-purpose anti-spam or anti-tracking system. Messages still arrive in your normal inbox, and a service can still identify you through a login, payment details, cookies or other information.
When Advanced Data Protection is the right choice
Advanced Data Protection is Apple’s strongest optional cloud-data setting. Under standard protection, Apple states that 15 data categories are end-to-end encrypted. Advanced Data Protection raises that number to 25, adding categories such as iCloud Backup, iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes, Reminders and Safari Bookmarks. iCloud Mail, Contacts and Calendars remain under standard protection in Apple’s security table. Some metadata also remains under standard protection, and some sharing methods do not support end-to-end encryption.

With end-to-end encryption, Apple does not hold the keys for the protected categories. If you lose access to your account and do not have a working recovery method, Apple says it cannot recover those keys or the protected data for you. Before enabling the feature, choose one of the recovery paths Apple offers:

- Recovery contact: a trusted person who can help you regain access through Apple’s recovery process.
- Personal recovery key: a unique key that you keep in a secure, offline-capable place. Anyone who obtains it may be able to assist with account recovery, so treat it like a high-value credential.
- Device credentials: keep passcodes and sign-in credentials for your trusted Apple devices available, because they can be part of the recovery chain.
Update every Apple device signed in to the account to software versions compatible with Advanced Data Protection before you enable it. An older device that cannot be updated may block activation or require removal from the account.
Enable or disable it deliberately
Open your iCloud settings, select Advanced Data Protection, follow the prompts to add a recovery contact or generate a recovery key, and complete Apple’s verification steps. Read the recovery information before confirming. You can turn the feature off later; Apple says the account then returns to standard data protection. Turning it off changes the protection model, so do not treat the switch as a substitute for maintaining your recovery method.
How Optimize iPhone Storage affects space
Optimize iPhone Storage addresses a different kind of shortage: space on the phone itself. Apple explains, “When Optimize Storage is turned on, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud, and, when needed, space-saving copies are stored on your device.” Your library remains available through Photos, while iOS removes or replaces local originals as capacity becomes tight.

Turn it on
- Open Settings.
- Tap [your name], then iCloud, then Photos.
- Turn on Sync this iPhone.
- Select Optimize iPhone Storage.
Current labels can differ slightly by operating-system release, but the sequence is in the iCloud Photos settings. Optimization may not happen immediately; the system balances local space, recent usage and the availability of the full-resolution originals in iCloud.

What it saves—and what it cannot save
Optimization reduces the device footprint of photos and videos. It does not shrink the iCloud library and does not create extra cloud capacity. You still need enough room in your iCloud plan for every original, and the phone needs an internet connection to download an original when you edit or share one that is not stored locally.
If the phone remains full after enabling optimization, inspect other categories such as downloaded video, messages, apps and offline files. Apple also suggests transferring photos to a computer when you need immediate device capacity; that is a separate local-archive step, not a replacement for iCloud Photos.

Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5 GB of free storage. iCloud+ capacities listed by Apple are 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB and 12 TB. These are storage capacities, not a recommendation for every household, and current prices and regional availability should be checked in your Apple account before subscribing. An iCloud+ subscription can be shared with members of your Family Sharing group.

- Open Settings and tap [your name].
- Tap iCloud to view the storage bar and the breakdown by app or service.
- Open the storage-management or recommendations area if it is offered.
- Review suggestions for large photos, old files or backups before deleting anything.
Recommendations can identify data that may no longer be needed, but they are not proof that an item is safe to remove. Check whether a backup belongs to a device you still use, whether a file is archived elsewhere and whether deleting a photo will remove it from every synced device.
Choose a plan by measured usage
- 50 GB: suitable only when the storage breakdown shows a small library and limited backups.
- 200 GB: gives more room for a growing photo library and can be shared with a family group.
- 2 TB, 6 TB or 12 TB: intended for substantially larger libraries, multiple users or long-term device backups; select among them only after checking current usage and growth.
Upgrading adds cloud capacity; it does not increase the physical storage in an iPhone or iPad. Conversely, Optimize iPhone Storage can free local space without changing the plan size.
A privacy-first setup sequence
For a new or reset device, use this order so each decision is explicit:
- Confirm that your Apple account has iCloud+ and review the available storage.
- Turn on Private Relay on each device used for Safari, then choose the IP-location level that fits your need for local results.
- Use Hide My Email for new services, newsletters and one-off contacts; label each generated address.
- Audit every trusted device and establish a recovery contact or recovery key before considering Advanced Data Protection.
- Enable Advanced Data Protection only after all devices are compatible and your recovery method has been tested or safely recorded.
- Enable iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage when local capacity, rather than cloud capacity, is the problem.
- Recheck the iCloud storage breakdown periodically and act on recommendations only after verifying what will be deleted.
Common problems and the safest fixes
Private Relay is unavailable
First check regional availability, then inspect the Wi-Fi network’s Limit IP Address Tracking setting and test another connection. Remember that the feature protects Safari traffic, so another app behaving differently is not by itself evidence of failure.

Hide My Email is missing
Verify that the account has iCloud+ and that the device and app support the feature. Try Safari or Mail, where Apple documents the controls, and update the operating system if the option should be available but is absent.
Advanced Data Protection will not activate
Check that every Apple device signed in to the account is on compatible software and that a recovery contact or recovery key has been configured. Do not bypass a recovery prompt simply to finish setup; the recovery method is the protection’s central trade-off.
iCloud says it is full after Optimize iPhone Storage
Optimization changes device copies, not cloud usage. Use the iCloud storage breakdown to find large photos, files or backups, then delete only data you have verified or move to a separate archive. If the complete library is needed in iCloud, choose a plan with enough capacity rather than expecting optimization to reduce it.
