Open the HyperOS update settings
On most current Xiaomi phones and tablets, the updater is reached through Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Xiaomi HyperOS. Tap the three-dot menu in the updater and choose Update settings when it is shown. This is Xiaomi’s general navigation route, but it is not a guarantee that every HyperOS device exposes the same page. A model, carrier variant or regional build can use different wording, combine switches, or omit a control entirely.

Do not confuse the updater page with the ordinary system settings for app updates. The choices discussed here control the operating-system package itself. If you cannot find Update settings, first open the HyperOS updater from the About screen rather than searching the main Settings list; the entry may only appear inside the updater’s overflow menu.
What each setting controls

Some builds merge automatic downloading with another switch, while others show only one of these controls. Treat a switch that is absent as a device-specific design, not as evidence that the function is active or inactive. Read the explanatory text on your own updater page before changing it.

Choose automatic installation based on control versus convenience
Leave automatic installation off when timing matters
Disabling automatic installation gives you a checkpoint between downloading and applying the update. You can wait until you have finished a call, travel, work session or other activity that should not be interrupted, then start the installation yourself. It also lets you review Xiaomi’s release information and confirm that the update is intended for your exact model and region before committing to a restart.
This setting does not necessarily prevent the package from being downloaded. If your device has separate download and installation controls, you can allow a Wi‑Fi download while retaining manual approval for the actual install. That combination suits people who want the file ready but do not want the device to choose the restart time.
Turn automatic installation on for unattended maintenance
Automatic installation is reasonable when you prefer the device to maintain itself and can tolerate an update occurring without a manual review. Xiaomi’s support material notes that some supported devices update at night while they are not in use. “Some” is important: the behavior is model- and software-dependent, so do not assume that every phone will wait for nighttime or that every update will install while you sleep.
Before enabling the switch, consider whether the phone is used as an alarm, hotspot, navigation device or work-critical line overnight. If an interruption would be costly, manual installation is the safer preference even when automatic updates are otherwise convenient.

Decide whether downloads should happen automatically
Wi‑Fi background downloads
When a separate automatic-download option is available, enabling it allows the package to arrive without you opening the updater each time. Xiaomi’s tablet FAQ describes automatic downloads while connected to Wi‑Fi, which makes this option distinct from automatic installation: the file can be fetched first and installed later, depending on the other switches on your build.
Enable the option if you have a reliable home or office Wi‑Fi connection and enough free storage for a large system package. Disable it if storage is tight, you use metered or shared Wi‑Fi, or you prefer to decide when a download begins. The setting’s name may be shortened on some builds, so look for wording that refers specifically to downloading rather than installing.
Mobile-data downloading
The mobile-data switch is the one to review most carefully. Xiaomi warns that update files can be large and advises checking both your data allowance and available storage. Leaving this option off makes the updater wait for Wi‑Fi instead of consuming cellular data. That is the sensible default for a capped plan, roaming connection or any account where a large transfer could trigger a charge or throttle.

Confirm the allowance in your carrier app first, and avoid assuming that a single update has a fixed size: package size varies by device, build and update path. If you do permit it temporarily, turn the switch back off after the download so a later package cannot use mobile data unexpectedly.

Use a configuration that matches how you use the device

These are preference-based configurations, not Xiaomi requirements. Automatic updating is not established as universally best; the right choice depends on whether avoiding interruption or avoiding maintenance work matters more to you.
Prepare the device before you install an update
Once you choose to install, follow the precautions in Xiaomi’s support guidance. A stable connection and adequate power reduce the chance that the process will stop partway through.
- Connect to stable Wi‑Fi. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 15 Ultra support FAQ explicitly advises a stable Wi‑Fi network. Use a connection that will remain available for the download and any verification that follows.
- Check free storage. Xiaomi warns that update files are large and recommends checking available storage. Remove or move unnecessary files before starting if the updater reports insufficient space.
- Check battery level. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra FAQ recommends at least 50% battery. Treat that figure as device-specific guidance from that FAQ, not a universal HyperOS requirement; your own updater may show a different threshold or require a charger.
- Schedule a safe interruption window. Do not begin while you need the phone for an active call, navigation or authentication. Automatic installation can restart the device when your model’s conditions are met.
- Do not interrupt the installation. Avoid powering off the device or deliberately breaking the connection once installation has started. Let the updater complete its checks and restart sequence.
The battery and connection checks are separate from the toggle choices. A device configured for manual installation still needs these preparations when you eventually apply the package.

Understand the difference between downloaded and installed
HyperOS can expose downloading and installation as separate decisions. A package may already be stored locally while the operating system waits for your approval to install it. Conversely, automatic installation cannot do anything until a package is available, whether it was downloaded in the background or fetched after you tapped an update button.

When troubleshooting, identify which stage has stopped:
- No package appears: check network conditions, the download preference and whether the device is eligible for that release.
- Package is present but not applied: review automatic-installation status, battery level, free storage and any on-screen scheduling requirement.
- Installation is offered but fails to start: reconnect to stable Wi‑Fi, charge the device and follow the updater’s specific message rather than repeatedly forcing a restart.
These symptoms do not prove that a setting is broken. Xiaomi’s controls and labels differ by build, so the text shown by your updater is the authoritative description for your device.

Check the device and region first
Xiaomi states that update availability is not identical across all devices and that older models may stop receiving updates. A missing package can therefore reflect rollout timing, model support or regional eligibility rather than a disabled switch. Verify your model and region through Xiaomi’s official support channel before changing unrelated settings or attempting to install a package intended for another variant.

Expect different labels on different builds
The general path uses About phone/tablet, Xiaomi HyperOS and the three-dot menu, but the final item may not be called Update settings. One build may combine automatic downloading and installation; another may show only a Wi‑Fi-related preference. Do not infer that two devices have identical behavior simply because both run HyperOS.
Do not force an unsupported update
If Xiaomi has not made a release available for your model or region, changing download permissions will not create eligibility. Wait for the official rollout or ask Xiaomi support to confirm the device’s support status. Installing an unrelated package is outside the normal updater workflow and can introduce avoidable risk.
A repeatable post-install checklist
After each HyperOS installation, revisit the updater rather than assuming your previous choices survived unchanged. Use this short sequence:
- Open Settings > About phone/tablet > Xiaomi HyperOS.
- Open the three-dot menu and select Update settings if available.
- Confirm whether automatic installation is on or off and decide whether that still matches your schedule.
- Check whether automatic downloads are enabled and whether they are limited to Wi‑Fi on your build.
- Ensure downloading over mobile data is off unless you deliberately need it.
- When a new package is offered, check storage, connect to stable Wi‑Fi and meet the battery guidance shown for your device before starting.
This review matters because a major software update can change menu wording or expose a control that was not present before. The updater itself, not a generic HyperOS screenshot, is the reliable reference for the current build.

The practical recommendation
For most people who want predictable bills and control over restarts, leave Download using mobile data off, allow automatic downloads only over trusted Wi‑Fi if the option exists, and keep Automatic installation off until you have chosen a convenient time. If you value a hands-off device and your model supports the expected overnight behavior, automatic installation can be enabled instead. Neither choice is mandatory; the important step is to distinguish downloading from installing and to make the cellular-data decision deliberately.
