Buy HomePod mini if you want the lower price, a compact speaker, or several speakers for different rooms. Apple’s U.S. Store listed it at $129 when checked in 2026. Buy HomePod (2nd generation) if this will be your main listening speaker and you value its specified 4-inch woofer, five-tweeter array, room sensing, and Spatial Audio; the same store listed it at $349. Both models can act as smart-home hubs, support multiroom audio, and pair in stereo with a second unit of the same model.
The two HomePods Apple currently presents

| Model | U.S. Apple Store price checked in 2026 | Audio hardware Apple specifies | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| HomePod mini | $129 | Full-range driver and dual force-cancelling passive radiators | Small rooms, lower budget, or adding speakers around the home |
| HomePod (2nd generation) | $349 | 4-inch high-excursion woofer, five tweeters, room sensing, and Spatial Audio | Main listening speaker or a listener who specifically wants the full-size hardware |
The listed-price difference is $220. Apple describes the mini as offering “Surprising sound for its size” and the full-size model as providing “Immersive, high-fidelity audio.” Those are Apple’s product descriptions, not results from an independent listening test.
What the extra $220 buys you
HomePod mini’s compact design
HomePod mini uses one full-range driver and two force-cancelling passive radiators. That specification is aimed at a small speaker that can fit where a larger enclosure would be inconvenient. Its lower entry price also makes it easier to place one in several rooms rather than concentrating the entire budget on one speaker.
#1 Best Overall
- Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.
- Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
- Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
- Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
- Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.
The mini still provides the HomePod platform’s core capabilities: Siri, multiroom audio, stereo pairing, smart-home hub functions, Sound Recognition, and temperature and humidity sensing, according to Apple’s comparison. The mini is not specified with the full-size model’s 4-inch woofer, five-tweeter array, or Spatial Audio support, so do not buy it expecting those particular features.
HomePod (2nd generation)’s full-size audio system
The second-generation full-size HomePod has a 4-inch high-excursion woofer and five tweeters. Apple also lists room sensing and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos for this model. Room sensing is intended to let the speaker account for its placement, while Spatial Audio is relevant when your playback content and service support the format.
These are manufacturer specifications. Apple’s cited pages do not provide independent frequency-response measurements, loudness testing, bass-extension tests, or a controlled comparison against the mini. Treat the hardware description as a way to identify the model’s design and supported features, not as a guarantee of how every room will sound.

Which model fits your room and listening habits?
Choose HomePod mini for secondary rooms
- Bedroom, office, kitchen, or hallway: its smaller footprint is easier to accommodate on a shelf or desk.
- Several listening zones: at the listed U.S. prices, two minis would cost $258 before tax, making a multiroom plan less expensive than two full-size units.
- Voice control and home automation: the mini has the same listed Siri, hub, Sound Recognition, and temperature/humidity-sensing functions as the larger model.
- Budget-sensitive purchase: $129 is $220 less than the listed full-size price.
The mini is the rational default when the speaker’s physical size, room coverage, or total number of speakers matters more than the full-size model’s specified audio components.
Choose HomePod (2nd generation) as the main speaker
- One primary listening position: the larger enclosure and specified woofer-and-tweeter layout are designed for Apple’s full-size HomePod experience.
- Spatial Audio priority: choose this model if Dolby Atmos playback through a compatible service and content is a deciding feature.
- Room sensing: the full-size model explicitly includes it in Apple’s comparison and technical specifications.
- You prefer the listed hardware over the lowest price: $349 buys the full-size model rather than an additional mini.
At the listed price, two full-size HomePods would total $698 before tax. That is a substantial commitment, so it makes sense only when a stereo pair or a high-priority main listening setup justifies it.
Shared features: what either HomePod can do
Apple lists both models as more than standalone speakers. Their overlapping capabilities matter if your buying decision is really about Siri or home control rather than maximum audio hardware.

| Capability | HomePod mini | HomePod (2nd generation) |
|---|---|---|
| Siri voice assistant | Yes | Yes |
| Smart-home hub | Yes | Yes |
| Sound Recognition | Yes | Yes |
| Temperature and humidity sensor | Yes | Yes |
| Multiroom audio | Yes | Yes |
| Stereo pairing | Yes, with another mini | Yes, with another second-generation HomePod |
A stereo pair is not a mix-and-match arrangement. Apple says a stereo pair requires two of the same HomePod model. You can use different models in the same home for multiroom playback, but a mini and a full-size HomePod cannot be combined into one stereo pair.

Planning a stereo pair or multiroom system
For a stereo pair
- Decide whether the room needs the mini’s compact format or the full-size model’s specified woofer, tweeter array, and Spatial Audio support.
- Buy two identical models: two HomePod mini speakers or two HomePod (2nd generation) speakers.
- Place them as a left and right pair in the same listening area, then configure the pair through Apple’s Home setup controls.
Using two minis costs $258 at the checked U.S. prices; using two full-size units costs $698. Those totals are simple multiplication of the listed single-speaker prices and exclude tax, delivery, and any later price changes.
For several rooms
Multiroom audio is supported by both models, so a practical expansion plan can start with one speaker in the room where you listen most and add matching or different HomePod models elsewhere. The stereo-pair restriction still applies to each paired room. For example, a full-size HomePod in a living room and a mini in a bedroom can participate in multiroom playback, but they cannot form one left/right stereo pair.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
HomePod as a smart-home hub
Both HomePod models are listed as smart-home hubs. Apple also identifies HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) among Thread-enabled hub options. This matters if you plan to use Matter or Thread accessories rather than treating the speaker only as an audio device.
Apple’s technical information says Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub. The examples include Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and a compatible third-party Thread border router. Before buying an accessory, check whether it uses Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, or another protocol and whether its manufacturer lists the exact hub requirements. “Works with smart home” is not enough to establish compatibility with every accessory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your main reason for buying is home control, the mini may provide the hub and sensing functions you need for $129. Paying for the full-size speaker is justified by its audio hardware and Spatial Audio, not by an additional hub function identified in Apple’s comparison.

Compatibility and setup checks before you buy
Apple lists compatible iPhone and iPad requirements for setup, including a compatible model running the latest iOS or iPadOS. Check the current requirements on Apple’s HomePod technical specifications page before ordering, especially if the device you plan to use for setup is older.
- Confirm your country’s store: open the local Apple Store and verify the model, price, color availability, and delivery status. The $129 and $349 figures here are U.S. listings checked in 2026.
- Check your setup device: make sure your iPhone or iPad is a supported model and is running the latest available iOS or iPadOS version Apple requires.
- Choose the role first: identify whether the speaker is for a small secondary room, a main listening position, a stereo pair, multiroom audio, or smart-home control.
- Budget for the complete plan: multiply the single-unit price if you intend to build a stereo pair, and remember that two units must be the same model for stereo.
- Validate accessory protocols: for Matter or Thread devices, read the accessory’s compatibility list and hub requirements rather than assuming every smart-home product will work.
Important limits in Apple’s published comparison
- No independent sound ranking: the cited Apple pages specify drivers, tweeters, room sensing, and Spatial Audio, but they do not establish that one model will sound better for every listener or room.
- Prices are volatile: the U.S. figures are observations from 2026. They are not universal or permanent prices.
- Availability varies: the store page used for the comparison does not guarantee stock, delivery dates, or colors in your market.
- Spatial Audio has content requirements: owning the full-size model alone does not turn every recording into Dolby Atmos. The playback service and specific content must support the format.
- Thread is not a promise of universal accessory support: each accessory can impose its own Matter version, app, hub, or network requirements.
Apple identifies HomePod (2nd generation) as a product introduced in 2023. That is a release-year fact, not a prediction about how long the model will remain available or receive software support.
A decision table for common buying situations
| Your priority | Recommended model | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest listed entry price | HomePod mini | $129 U.S. Apple Store price checked in 2026 | Current local price and stock |
| Small footprint | HomePod mini | Compact full-range-driver design | That you do not specifically need the full-size model’s Spatial Audio specification |
| Main speaker for music and films | HomePod (2nd generation) | 4-inch woofer, five tweeters, room sensing, and Spatial Audio listed by Apple | Compatible Dolby Atmos content and service |
| Two-speaker stereo system | Two identical minis or two identical second-generation HomePods | Apple requires two of the same model | Total budget: $258 for two minis or $698 for two full-size units at the checked prices |
| Smart-home hub at the lowest cost | HomePod mini | Both models list hub, Thread, sensing, and Siri functions | Accessory-specific Matter or Thread requirements |
| Mixed speakers in different rooms | Either, in any combination | Both support multiroom audio | Do not attempt to make different models one stereo pair |
The practical verdict
For most homes adding a first HomePod to a bedroom, office, kitchen, or multiroom setup, HomePod mini is the sensible purchase because it delivers the shared smart-home and multiroom functions at the lower listed price. Select HomePod (2nd generation) when the speaker will be your principal listening device and the full-size model’s specified 4-inch woofer, five tweeters, room sensing, and Spatial Audio are worth the additional $220. If you want stereo, decide before ordering: two identical minis and two identical full-size HomePods are valid pairs, while a mini and a full-size model are not.
For complete model details, consult Apple’s HomePod (2nd generation) product page and the technical specifications, then recheck your local Apple Store for current pricing and availability.
