Which Hisense PX4 Pro Picture Settings Should You Change First?

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Change the Hisense PX4 Pro in this order: choose Filmmaker or Theater, check whether the light sensor is dimming the image, set the seven-level iris for your room and screen, and only then consider color temperature. Leave white balance, color management and other calibration controls alone unless you can measure the result. This sequence fixes the most visible problems while avoiding settings that may be wrong for your particular projector, screen and source.

Start with these four changes

  1. Select a cinema-oriented picture mode. Try Filmmaker first for movies and television, then compare the Theater presets.
  2. Check the light-sensor setting. If Filmmaker looks unexpectedly dark, the sensor may be reducing output.
  3. Set the iris for your viewing environment. Closing it can improve black levels, but it also reduces brightness.
  4. Adjust color temperature only when the image visibly looks too blue or too warm. Do not copy a reviewer’s white-balance numbers as if they were universal.

Make one change at a time and watch the same dark and bright scenes after each adjustment. That makes it possible to tell whether a setting improved the picture or merely changed its character.

1. Choose Filmmaker or Theater before changing individual controls

Picture mode changes a group of processing decisions at once, including tone mapping, motion handling and color defaults. It is therefore the highest-impact first adjustment. Open the PX4 Pro’s Picture menu and compare Filmmaker with the available Theater modes. Menu names and available options can vary by firmware, region and input.

Mode or preset Best first use What independent evaluations found How to decide
Filmmaker Films and scripted shows when you want less processing What Hi-Fi? reported that Filmmaker removed its motion-smoothing concern. Projector Reviews included Filmmaker among the more accurate-looking presets on its sample. Use it when natural motion and a cinema presentation matter more than maximum brightness.
Theater Night Dark-room movie viewing Projector Reviews described Theater Night as one of the better-looking, more accurate presets on its tested unit. Compare shadow detail and highlight brightness against Filmmaker in your room.
Theater Day Movies or television with more ambient light Projector Reviews also found Theater Day among the stronger presets on its sample. Choose it if a brighter presentation is easier to see without resorting to aggressive processing.

These are viewing-based and sample-based findings, not a guarantee that one preset is best for every PX4 Pro. What Hi-Fi?’s final preference was based on its own viewing, while Projector Reviews evaluated a different unit and setup. Start with Filmmaker, then keep the Theater preset that gives your screen the better balance of motion, shadow detail and brightness.

For a detailed account of those mode comparisons, see What Hi-Fi?’s PX4 Pro evaluation and Projector Reviews’ PX4 Pro review.

2. Check whether the light sensor is making Filmmaker too dim

If the picture looks much darker than expected immediately after selecting Filmmaker, check the automatic light-sensing option before raising brightness or abandoning the mode. Projector Reviews found that its PX4 Pro sample was unusually dim because the light-sensor setting was engaged. Turning that setting off restored the expected brightness in its test.

How to check it

  1. Display a familiar movie scene in Filmmaker.
  2. Open the Picture or projector settings menu and locate the light-sensor, ambient-light or automatic-brightness option. The exact label can differ by software version.
  3. Note whether the image changes as room lighting changes. A sensor that is active may lower laser output in a dark room.
  4. Temporarily disable the sensor and replay the same scene. Keep it disabled only if the resulting brightness and black level suit your room.

This is a diagnostic check, not a universal instruction to switch the sensor off. Automatic dimming can be useful when you want consistent comfort or lower output in a dark room. If the image is already the right brightness, changing the sensor may provide no benefit.

3. Use the seven-level iris to match light output to your screen

Hisense lists an adjustable seven-level iris for the PX4 Pro on its official product page. The iris controls how much of the projector’s light reaches the screen. A more closed position reduces excess brightness and can deepen blacks; the trade-off is lower peak light and potentially less impact in bright highlights.

A practical iris procedure

  1. Begin with the iris fully open or at its current default so you have a reference.
  2. Play a scene containing both near-black detail and a bright object, such as a night exterior with a lamp or stars.
  3. Move the iris one level toward the more closed position.
  4. Watch whether black bars and shadows look darker without losing texture in clothing, hair or dark walls.
  5. Check a bright daytime scene. Stop closing the iris if highlights look dull or the overall image no longer has enough punch.
  6. Repeat until the image is bright enough for your screen and room without looking washed out.

There is no correct iris number independent of the installation. A large, high-gain or close-viewed screen may tolerate a more closed iris, while a larger matte screen or a room with ambient light may need more output. Treat the iris as a room-and-screen control rather than a picture-quality score.

The manufacturer advertises 3,500 ANSI lumens, but that is a published specification rather than an independent measurement. Projector Reviews measured 3,386 lumens with the iris open and Brightness Enhancement set to Ultra on its sample. The reviewer also reported that this enhancement harmed color reproduction and increased fan noise, so the figure should not be interpreted as the brightness of every normal picture mode.

4. Change color temperature only when you can identify a visible problem

Color temperature changes the overall balance between blue, red and other tones. If whites look obviously cold or skin looks unnaturally bluish, compare the available Warm settings; if the image looks yellow or red, compare a cooler option. Make the smallest change that fixes the problem, then recheck neutral objects such as white shirts, clouds and gray walls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reviews disagree about the PX4 Pro’s factory color, which is why no single temperature should be presented as universally correct:

Source Finding What it means for your setting
What Hi-Fi? Settled on Warm 2 for its reviewed content. Warm 2 is a reasonable comparison point, not a guaranteed best choice for another unit.
Projector Reviews Its most accurate modes ran warm but could be corrected. A warm default may be close to the target on one sample, yet still need adjustment in another installation.
RTINGS Described its tested unit as blue-tinted and inaccurate out of the box. Do not assume every PX4 Pro leaves the factory with the same color balance.

Differences in units, screens, measurement methods and picture modes can all produce different conclusions. Use your eyes for a basic correction, or use a meter and calibration software when accuracy is important.

5. Reserve white balance and color management for measured calibration

The PX4 Pro exposes more advanced controls than the first changes require. A general Hisense settings document describes gamma, a color tuner and 11-point white balance, but it warns that available options vary by model, region and content. It is not a confirmed, PX4 Pro-specific menu manual; consult it only as a general explanation of control types: Hisense picture-settings overview.

Projector Reviews calibrated its own sample and reported gamma 2.2, a 6,462 K color temperature, average grayscale dE2000 of 1.3 and average color-tracking dE2000 of 1.0 in Filmmaker. Those figures describe the result after measurement and adjustment on that particular projector, screen, room and source. They are not menu values to copy into every PX4 Pro.

When calibration is worthwhile

  • You need repeatable color for professional or reference viewing.
  • Neutral grays remain tinted after trying the basic temperature presets.
  • You have a colorimeter or access to a qualified calibrator.
  • You can save a calibrated mode separately from a general movie or gaming mode.

Without measurement, changing individual red, green and blue gains can make one scene look better while introducing errors elsewhere. If you do experiment, record the original values first so you can restore them.

How to choose settings for different rooms and content

Use case Priority Starting approach Watch for
Dark-room movies Black level, shadow detail and natural motion Filmmaker or Theater Night; check the light sensor; close the iris until blacks improve without crushing shadow detail. Too much iris closure can make highlights and bright scenes look flat.
Movies with ambient light Sufficient brightness and readable shadows Theater Day or Filmmaker with a less-closed iris; leave the sensor on only if its dimming is acceptable. Raising output can make blacks look gray on a bright room or low-gain screen.
Television and mixed sources Consistent brightness and comfortable motion Compare Filmmaker with a Theater preset, then set the iris for the most common viewing conditions. Different inputs may store separate picture settings.
Gaming Input responsiveness, readable shadow detail and stable brightness Use the display’s lowest-latency or game-oriented option if your firmware provides one, then check brightness and iris. The available evidence does not establish a complete PX4 Pro-specific gaming recipe; verify response and motion with your own console or PC.

Movie viewing and gaming can legitimately need different priorities. Keep separate input or picture-mode memories when the projector allows it instead of compromising a cinema setting for game menus.

A repeatable way to judge each change

  1. Use the same source. Streaming services can change quality from scene to scene, so a familiar disc, downloaded clip or consistent test pattern is easier to judge.
  2. Warm up the projector. Evaluate after it has reached normal operating temperature rather than immediately after startup.
  3. Check three image types. Use a dark scene for black level, a skin-tone close-up for color and a bright outdoor scene for highlight detail.
  4. Change one control. Keep a short note of the previous mode, sensor state, iris position and color temperature.
  5. Return to the original setting. If the change helps only one scene and harms two others, restore the previous value.

Do not judge the iris or color temperature from a paused menu screen alone. Moving images reveal whether shadow texture, motion cadence and highlight detail remain convincing.

Troubleshooting common PX4 Pro picture complaints

The picture is unexpectedly dim

  • Check whether the light sensor or automatic brightness control is active.
  • Compare Filmmaker with Theater Day.
  • Open the iris one level and reassess a bright scene.
  • Confirm that a brightness-enhancement option is not creating an unusual mode combination.

Blacks look gray or the image looks washed out

  • Close the iris one step at a time.
  • Reduce room light reaching the screen.
  • Check that a high-output or enhancement mode is not being used unnecessarily.

Shadow detail disappears

  • Open the iris slightly.
  • Compare Filmmaker with Theater Night rather than lowering brightness blindly.
  • Inspect dark clothing and hair in a familiar scene; blacker is not better if texture vanishes.

Motion looks artificial

  • Start with Filmmaker, which What Hi-Fi? found solved its motion-smoothing concern.
  • Check motion-processing controls separately if your firmware exposes them.
  • Judge a moving camera pan, not only a static frame.

Whites or skin tones look tinted

  • Compare Warm 2 with the adjacent temperature presets.
  • Use neutral objects and faces as references.
  • If the tint persists, consider measured calibration instead of changing multiple color controls by eye.

What not to copy from online calibration tables

Online reviews can be useful for understanding behavior, but their numbers belong to the tested sample. A projector’s optical path, firmware, screen material, room reflections and source device all affect the result. The measured 6,462 K temperature, gamma 2.2 and dE2000 values reported by Projector Reviews demonstrate what calibration achieved for that reviewer; they do not establish a universal PX4 Pro preset. The same caution applies to RTINGS’ blue-tint finding and What Hi-Fi?’s Warm 2 preference: each is an attributed result from a particular evaluation, not a factory-wide rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most owners, the defensible sequence remains simple: select a cinema mode, verify the light sensor, tune the iris to the installation, and stop at color temperature unless a visible problem remains. Advanced controls are valuable when measured, but they are the least reliable place to begin by copying someone else’s values.
