The most useful Hatch Restore 3 changes are the ones that shape your actual evening and morning: the Unwind routine’s sound, light, duration, volume and brightness; the clock display schedule and brightness; and the Sunrise Alarm’s light, sound, duration, volume and repeat days. Start with a routine you can repeat, remove anything that distracts you, and adjust one control at a time based on how you sleep and wake.
Hatch’s documentation explains what each control does, but it does not show that any particular setting guarantees better sleep or treats a sleep disorder. Use the device as a behavioral aid, not as a medical treatment.

1. Make the Unwind bedtime routine repeatable
Your evening routine is the best place to start because it controls what happens while you are trying to settle down. In the Hatch Sleep app, open Restore 3, choose the Unwind or Sleep routine, and edit an existing routine or add a step.
Choose a sound you can tolerate every night
Hatch lets you select a sound for a routine step and adjust its volume. Begin at a low level that masks distracting background noise without demanding attention. If any sound keeps you alert, set the volume to zero or choose another sound rather than increasing it to compete with the room.
Use light only if it helps you wind down
The same routine step can include a light or color. Set brightness low if you want a visual cue, or move the brightness slider to zero to disable the light. A dark room is a sensible starting point for anyone who finds colored light stimulating, while a very dim, warm-looking cue may be useful for someone who wants a consistent transition into bed. These are comfort choices, not proven prescriptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet a duration that matches your real bedtime
Choose a duration you can follow consistently. A routine that ends long before you are ready for sleep may feel abrupt; one that runs after you are already asleep may be unnecessary. Hatch’s Unwind routine instructions (August 20, 2025) describe the available sound, light, duration, volume and brightness controls.

Turn off either component independently
Sound and light are separate parts of a step. You can keep a quiet sound while disabling light, or keep a dim light while disabling sound. Change one component at a time for several nights so you know which adjustment affected your experience.
2. Hide or dim the clock display
A bright clock can become a source of checking, especially when you wake during the night. Restore 3’s clock controls are in the device settings in the Hatch Sleep app. Hatch documents four useful options: display on, display off, a schedule, and brightness adjustments.
Choose the display mode
- Off: The clock remains dark. Tapping the device reveals the time briefly.
- Scheduled: Use one behavior during the day and another at night, such as visible in the morning and hidden during sleep hours.
- Dimmed: Keep the time visible at a lower brightness if you need a quick glance without a bright room.
- 24-hour time: Switch the format if it is easier for you to read or fits your household’s routine.
Hatch’s clock display settings guide (May 18, 2026) notes that daytime and nighttime brightness settings are available in the iOS app version. If you hide the display completely, remember that tapping the device is required to see the time.

Set the days deliberately
Select only the days on which you want the alarm to run. Hatch says that if you deselect every repeat day, the alarm runs once and then removes itself. That is useful for travel, an appointment or another one-time wake-up.
Pick a sunrise duration you will actually notice
A longer sunrise phase gives the light more time to build before the scheduled time; a shorter phase creates a quicker change. There is no documented “best” duration, so choose based on how gradually you want to wake and how sensitive you are to light.
Balance brightness and sound
Set light brightness high enough for you to notice but not so high that it feels harsh. Select a sound and set its volume separately. According to Hatch’s Sunrise Alarms documentation (June 26, 2025), the sound begins at the scheduled alarm time, after the sunrise-light phase. In other words, the light is the early cue; the sound is not played throughout the entire sunrise period.
Use sound as a backup, not a surprise
If you wake reliably to light, try a quieter sound. If you sleep through the light, increase volume gradually or choose a more noticeable sound. Make changes in small increments so the alarm does not become an abrupt disruption.

4. Disable light effects that feel distracting
Some Unwind sound steps pair audio with synchronized immersive light. Hatch’s Restore 3 Light Guide (June 30, 2026) explains that the light option can be toggled off while configuring the step.
The bedside light is also customizable by color and brightness in device settings. Treat that light separately from routine steps: you might want a bedside color for reading or getting out of bed while keeping the overnight routine dark. If changing colors makes you more alert, use the lowest comfortable brightness or leave the bedside light off.
5. Learn the physical controls so you can respond without your phone
The Restore 3 Controls Guide (September 15, 2026) describes the buttons and dial:

6. A practical order for personalizing your device
Changing every control at once makes it difficult to identify what helped or annoyed you. Use this order:
- Make the room visually quiet: Turn the clock off or schedule it to go dark, then set any routine light to a low level.
- Make the routine audible only when needed: Select a sound and start with low volume; disable sound if silence works better.
- Fit the duration to your bedtime: Adjust the Unwind length so it ends at a realistic point in your evening.
- Set the morning cue: Choose Sunrise Alarm days, then select a duration, brightness and sound volume that you can notice without feeling startled.
- Observe before revising: Keep the setup unchanged for several nights, then alter one control rather than rebuilding the entire routine.
This process does not establish that a setting improves sleep in a clinical sense. It simply gives you a repeatable way to discover which cues fit your room, schedule and sensitivity.
7. Troubleshoot an alarm that does not behave as expected
If a scheduled alarm fails to start, Hatch recommends checking the alarm state and its configuration. Use this sequence:
Recommended Free Tools
- Look at the physical alarm toggle and slide it right if alarms are disabled.
- In the app, open the alarm and verify the selected day or days.
- Confirm the scheduled time and whether a sunrise phase is enabled.
- Check that a sound is selected if you expect an audible alarm, and review its volume.
- Confirm that Restore 3 is plugged in and connected as required for your setup.
Hatch’s Alarm not going off? article (July 24, 2026) specifically directs users to check whether the alarm is enabled and to verify its day, time, sound and sunrise selections.
What the official documentation does—and does not—claim
Hatch describes Restore 3 as a configurable sleep routine with soothing lights, sleep sounds and sunrise alarms. Its overview says: “Restore 3 has everything you need to customize your sleep routine with soothing light and sleep sounds at night and gentle sunrise alarms for energized mornings.” Read the full Restore 3 Overview (July 9, 2026) for that product description.
The reviewed setup and settings pages do not report a named sleep-outcome statistic, a measured effect size or a comparison showing that one brightness, sound, duration or alarm schedule is superior. They document available controls and device behavior. If persistent insomnia, loud snoring, breathing pauses, severe daytime sleepiness or another symptom concerns you, changing Restore 3 settings is not a substitute for medical evaluation.
Quick decision guide
| If your problem is… | Try changing… | Why this is a reasonable test |
|---|---|---|
| The device feels too stimulating at bedtime | Routine light brightness, immersive-light toggle and sound volume | These controls directly reduce visual and audio input without removing the routine itself. |
| The clock draws your attention | Clock schedule, display brightness or display-off mode | You can remove the visible time while retaining a brief tap-to-view function. |
| You sleep through the morning alarm | Sunrise duration, light brightness, sound choice and volume | These are the available wake-cue controls; adjust gradually rather than making one extreme change. |
| You wake abruptly | Sunrise duration and sound volume | A longer light phase or quieter sound may create a less sudden transition, depending on your sensitivity. |
| An alarm runs on the wrong day | Repeat-day selection and the alarm toggle | Both the schedule and the enabled/disabled state determine whether an alarm runs. |
Bottom line
Start with a low-distraction Unwind routine, hide or schedule the clock, and configure the Sunrise Alarm for the days and cues you actually need. Restore 3 gives you independent control over sound, light, duration, brightness and volume, so personalize those settings rather than searching for a single “best” preset. The official guides establish how the controls work, not a guaranteed sleep benefit.
