For most buyers, Grand Theft Auto V is the best pick: it has a current PS5 edition, and GTA Online offers races built around being pursued by police. Choose Grand Theft Auto IV instead if the specific appeal is escaping a visible police search area that shifts when officers spot you again. The better chase depends on which kind of pressure you want—not an objective ranking of police AI.
How the police chases differ
| What matters | Grand Theft Auto V | Grand Theft Auto IV |
|---|---|---|
| Pursuit structure | Wanted levels create escalating police pressure; Rockstar describes tunnels as one way to escape. Rockstar Support | A secondary mechanic reference describes a visible search radius anchored to the last place police saw the player. Being spotted again refocuses the search. GTA Wiki |
| Structured chase play | GTA Online has a Pursuit Series of seven point-to-point races in which participants are wanted by police. In the Race Creator, enabling Wanted Level allows police to chase participants. Rockstar Newswire Rockstar Support | The available evidence describes its wanted-level escape mechanic, not a comparable police-race mode. |
| Current purchase information established here | Rockstar lists a PS5 edition with Story Mode included and GTA Online listed separately; its PC store listing includes Enhanced and Legacy editions. Rockstar Store Rockstar Store | Current platform availability was not verified. Check compatibility and retailer availability for your platform before buying. |
Why GTA V is the safer recommendation for most buyers
It has a verified current PS5 purchase path
Rockstar currently lists Grand Theft Auto V for PS5. Its listing identifies Story Mode as included and also lists GTA Online. On PC, the Rockstar Store lists Enhanced and Legacy editions, so check which one fits your platform and needs before purchasing. The official listings establish the editions and product details, not a universal recommendation for every console or PC setup.

Online adds purpose-built pursuit races
The Pursuit Series gives players a more structured way to make police chases the point of a race: Rockstar’s July 2021 Los Santos Tuners notes describe seven point-to-point races while wanted by police. For custom races, Rockstar’s Race Creator guide says that turning on Wanted Level lets police chase participants. These are distinct options within GTA Online, rather than evidence that every race or session is a police chase.
The wanted-level scale offers an escalating chase
GTA V uses a one-to-five-star wanted scale. The Xbox-hosted Grand Theft Auto V — Game Help explains how stars appear in the HUD and says five stars bring the National Guard. In GTA Online, Rockstar also says Lester can remove a wanted level for a fee; using that option changes the escape problem rather than testing whether you can evade the pursuit yourself. When GTA IV is the better choice
You want to outmaneuver a search area
The mechanic reference for GTA IV describes a search radius that remains around the last location where police saw the player. If officers spot you again, the search focuses on the new sighting. That setup makes breaking visibility and moving beyond the search area central to the escape. It is a different chase rhythm from simply choosing GTA V for its Pursuit Series.
You are comfortable checking availability before purchase
Current platform availability for GTA IV is not established here. Verify that the game is sold for, and compatible with, your specific platform and edition before buying; do not assume a listing or version intended for one platform will work on another.
Rank #2
- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
Make the choice by chase style, not an AI ranking
- Choose GTA V if you want the more straightforward current purchase recommendation, especially on PS5, or want police-focused races in GTA Online.
- Choose GTA IV if a visible search area and the cat-and-mouse task of avoiding another sighting are the chase mechanics you prefer—and you have confirmed the game is available for your platform.
- Do not treat either as a proven winner for police intelligence. The documented mechanics support a comparison of pursuit styles and available modes, not a controlled comparison of AI quality or enjoyment.
What has changed in GTA Online
Rockstar’s July 23, 2026 update notes include wanted-level overrides in Mission Creator and additions of law-enforcement vehicles. These updates show that GTA Online continues to change, but they do not establish that every feature works identically in every edition. Check the notes for the edition you play before relying on a particular creator option or vehicle. Rockstar Newswire
